St. Ignatius High School

An unforgettable tradition of 125 yearsSt. Ignatius High School

The Founding of St. Ignatius

St. Ignatius was founded in 1886 by a German Jesuit, from the generosity of Bishop Richard Gilmour. The school was originally a six-year secondary school based on the German Gymnasium that was to be attended after the completion of six years of grammar school. As time went on, four year high school and college programs were founded in 1902. In 1923, the college changed its name to John Carrol University and moved out to University Heights, eventually moving back to Cleveland. Ignatius was off to a good start!

Saint Ignatius High School remains at its original location at 1911 West 30th Street to this day. Loyola Hall, former St. Mary of the Assumption grade school, hosts the world history and theology segments. The $11.5 million state-of-the-art Breen Center for the Performing Arts replaced the Xavier Center in August 2009. Say if you were running on an empty stomach after a few bites a Rade Dining Hall, you cant pass up the mouthwatering view of the Wendys as you take a trip up to Kyle Field or a game of football at Wasmer. The Main Building contains a list of attractions such as: The Walton Center, Carrol & Sullivan gyms, the workout room, ect,. On January 21, 1974, Saint Ignatius was added to the National Register of Historical Places.

St Ignatius High School

Being a St. Ignatius student myself, I know for a fact that we are strongly dedicated to our spiritual faith. Mission trips, guided by Father Gafney, guides us through the life of Jesus by taking trips around the world and even around the neighborhood spreading the word of God and helping others. Also, we participate in food drives in which we go around feeding the homeless to keep them going throughout their day. And most importantly, Mass is served almost every day 4th, 5th, and 6th periods to grow closer to our Savior. Ignatius truly develops us men in to becoming role models for others, and of course, men for others.
