Taking the next step towards a possible shared mission with Loyola University As we enter Advent, let us heed the Christ’s call “to stay awake” so as to celebrate anew the mystery of Christ Incarnation and, at the same time, to continue our discernment process regarding our future as a parish. As you will recall, our seven-week discernment process concluded with a decision to develop a new way of being church in this area. This new mission would involve working with Loyola University and the local Jesuit community as possible partners.

With that in mind, David Van Zytveld, director of the Center for Urban Research and Learning at Loyola University, convened a meeting of representatives from different departments at Loyola University, along with Father Dan and I to consider possible avenues of collaboration. This meeting was just a first step to determine if there was interest on the part of the university for joining the parish in developing a mission center in the neighborhood. The response from the Loyolans was actually very encouraging.

The goal of this initial meeting was certainly not to make any decisions. We were simply there, on the one hand, to share the results of our parish’s discernment process and, on the other hand, to gauge whether or not there was any interest on the part of the university to collaborate with us in the creation of this mission center. We are happy to report that there was considerable interest on the part of the 14 faculty members who attended the meeting.

Here are some of the many thoughts that emerged in the course of our meeting: the possibility of creating a holistic wellness center in Rogers Park; a place where together we might address the more urgent physical, psychological and social needs of our neighbors. We also considered the possibility of providing of place where young people could come together to problem solve and to collaborate around music, theatre and the arts. Finally, we explored many possibilities for invigorating worship and faith formation.

This excellent conversation with Loyola was just the first step in what hopefully will become a beautiful journey together. Needless to say, we will need to have many more conversations with more partners as we move forward. Most importantly, as we move forward, let us do so with Advent patience and hope. We can move into the uncertain future with confidence because we know that we never walk alone but that Christ journey with us.

El Proximo Paso hacia una mision compartida con la Universidad de Loyola Al entrar en Adviento, prestemos atención al llamado de Cristo "a permanecer despierto" a fin de reconocer la presencia de Cristo entre nosotros a la vez que continuamos nuestro proceso de discernimiento con respecto a nuestro futuro como parroquia. Como recordarán, nuestro proceso de discernimiento de siete semanas concluyó con la decisión de desarrollar una nueva forma de ser iglesia en esta área. Nos complace informar que hubo un interés considerable por parte de los 14 miembros de la facultad que asistieron a la reunión.

Algunos de los muchos pensamientos que surgieron en el transcurso de la reunión: la posibilidad de crear un centro de bienestar holístico en Rogers Park; Un lugar que podría abordar las necesidades físicas, psicológicas y sociales más urgentes de nuestros vecinos. About Advent Wreaths Traditionally, Advent wreaths are constructed of a circle of evergreen branches into which four candles are inserted, representing the four weeks of Advent. Ideally, three candles are purple and one is rose, but white candles can also be used.

The purple candles in particular symbolize the prayer, penance, and preparatory sacrifices and goods works undertaken at this time. The rose candle is lit on the third Sunday, Gaudete Sunday, when the priest also wears rose vestments at Mass; Gaudete Sunday is the Sunday of rejoicing, because the faithful have arrived at the midpoint of Advent, when their preparation is now half over and they are close to Christmas.

The progressive lighting of the candles symbolizes the expectation and hope surrounding our Lord’s first coming into the world and the anticipation of his second coming to judge the living and the dead.

To see everything now with new eyes, To discern and test the spirits that help me read the

signs of time, To relish the things that are yours, and to communicate

Sobre las Coronas de Adviento Tradicionalmente, las coronas de Adviento se construyen con ramas de hoja perenne en las que se insertan cuatro velas, representando las cuatro semanas de Adviento. Lo ideal es que tres velas sean moradas y una rosa, pero también se pueden usar velas blancas or rojas.

Las velas moradas en particular simbolizan oración, penitencia, y sacrificios preparatorios y buenas obras que se emprenden en este tiempo. La vela rosa se enciende en el tercer domingo, Gaudete, cuando el sacerdote también lleva vestiduras rosadas en la Misa; el domingo Gaudete es el domingo de alegrarse porque los fieles han llegado a la mitad del Adviento, cuando su preparación está ahora a mitad de camino y están más cerca de la Navidad.

Los voluntarios limpiaron y dejaron la habitación impecable. La cena de este año fue financiada en parte por la familia y amigos de Larry Dorn, quienes hicieron contribuciones en su honor. This week the food pantry will begin distributing our special holiday items. Tomorrow, we will receive a delivery of turkeys, hams and chickens for our families along with fresh apples, oranges, grapes and potatoes. Right before Thanksgiving we received a generous donation of over 2,000 pounds from Sacred Heart School. The 7th grade boys helped deliver and sort the items. The food pantry is filled to the ceilings with basics for our families. LAST CALL FOR GIVING TREE GIFTS Catholic Charities will be picking up the GIVING TREE GIFTS this Tuesday. The gifts have been sorted and packed for the Annual Toy Shower hosted by Catholic Charites. If you took and ornament and have not returned your gift, PLEASE DO SO TODAY. We don’t want to disappoint the many children that will be attending the Toy Shower. Thank you for your generosity. Thanksgiving Dinner This week’s bulletin was submitted before Thanksgiving. We anticipate serving about 100 friends and neighbors a traditional dinner of turkey, stuffing, gravy, cranberries, mashed potatoes and green beans. The Holy Name Room will have been decorated the night before by a group of artistic volunteers. The room was a festival of fall colors! Thanksgiving morning a cheerful group of volunteers will serve as wait staff and food servers to make sure our guests were promptly served! Volunteers cleaned and left the room spotless. This year’s dinner was funded in part by the family and friends of Larry Dorn who made contributions in his honor. Knowing Larry, we are sure he would be pleased.

Our Lady of Guadalupe Next week we will celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. This feast is a remembrance of the Blessed Mother appearing to Juan Diego for 3 days from December 9 through December 12th. Each day Mary appeared to Juan Diego dressed as a pregnant Aztec woman to show her love and compassion for the Aztec people who were being oppressed. Mary’s request was for a church to be built in her honor. The bishop at the time, Bishop Zumarraga did not understand Juan Diego and did not believe in his vision. On December 12th Mary appeared to Juan Diego and gave him a sign for the bishop. When he was admitted into the bishop’s room, Juan Diego opened his cloak and out dropped roses. On the cloak where he had carried the roses an image of Mary remained as she appeared to Juan Diego. Mary’s visit to Guadalupe is a reminder that God will remember His mercy for all people. Señora de Guadalupe. Esta fiesta es un recuerdo de la Santísima Madre que se apareció a Juan Diego durante 3 días del 9 al 12 de diciembre. Cada día, Mary se le aparecía a Juan Diego vestido como una mujer azteca embarazada para mostrar su amor y compasión por las personas aztecas que estaban siendo oprimidas. La solicitud de María fue que se construyera una iglesia en su honor. El obispo de la época, el obispo Zumarraga no entendía a Juan Diego y no creía en su visión. This night of prayer and song is a great way to enter into the spirit of Advent and the Christmas season. It will feature classic and contemporary Christmas music, biblical readings, and preaching. The evening will begin at 7:00 PM and admission is free.
