St. John Vianney’s in Bettendorf is sending it’s 5th Medical Mission to their twin parish,

intensive experience helping our brothers and sisters in Haiti. The trip is planned for

January 22 - 30, 2016. For those who are interested and would like more information

please contact Ann Wester at 563-332-7627 or [email protected] or Dr. Mark Blaser

Please join the QCs Standing United Against Hate Committee in an interfaith event to

promote action, unity, and prayer. Event will take place on Aug. 30th at 5 PM at four

From Father’s Desk

State of the Parish

I know the State of the Union Speech is delivered to congress in January, but July is a

good time too! The budget is done (basically) at Buffalo and we are putting the finishing

touches on St. Alphonsus. Overall our financial situation is pretty good, but we have

expended some money in savings for capital improvement projects at the church build-

ings and rectories. Most importantly, we are looking at continued problems with water,

particularly the St. Al’s school roof and rectory basement. The Holy Name Society has

been a great help for the St. Al’s projects and your support of the fish fry has been a

great blessing!

We are now under one umbrella with St. Mary’s parish and have welcomed a new priest,

Fr. Guillermo. I am hoping to combine more of our ministry and outreach over the next

year in order to provide better services to all involved. Primarily this will continue with

youth ministry and extend to RCIA, support of All Saints School, and staffing. We already

share some personnel, and I think we can do a little more without too much trouble.

Our Knights of Columbus Council has recently been named a “Five Star Council.” This is

the first time a council in Iowa has received such a reward and recognizes our recruit-

ment efforts, service, and participation in KC programs. Kudos to Mr. Bill Keiffert for his

great cheerleading efforts!

One big challenge I am trying to address is involvement in active ministry. First, we

have a critical need for youth ministry volunteers at St. Al’s. To date, Mary-Ellen Pfeiffer

and Sister Seraphin have done a large portion of the work. We still need more buy-in

from parents, grandparents, and volunteers in order to sustain this ministry. Our chil-

dren are our future, but I have not seen enough evidence that we are taking this obliga-

tion seriously as a parish. Further, we have many children on the St. Al’s roles, but only

a small percentage regularly attend religious education classes, participate in youth

activities, or go to Sunday Mass. This must change if we are to maintain long-term viabil-

ity.

This will shortly become an even bigger challenge for us since Mary-Ellen has informed

me that as of August 14th she will be stepping down as our Director of Youth Ministry.

She has worked hard to get the ball rolling for us, but thinks that it is time for her to

move on. Be sure to thank Mary-Ellen for all her hard work and caring ministry over the

last year! Our youth will still be attending NCYC in the fall and regular youth activities

will remain on the calendar. Because of this I will be looking to hire a youth minister to

serve the three parishes starting ASAP.

Finally, as some of you may have noticed, the Latin Mass community has moved to St.

Mary parish. The prospect of a morning Mass time (8 AM) was just too good for many of

the families who attend this liturgy to pass up. Don’t, worry though, they aren’t going

far and I will continue to offer the Latin Mass there on a semi-regular basis.

May God Bless You All, Fr. Paul
