OUR HOLY FATHER’S GIFT TO THE WORLD

In my homily last Sunday, I attempted to underline Pope Francis’ Jubilee Year of Mercy Message for 2016. Jesus is the face of God’s mercy and He told the parable of the Good Samaritan, on the road from Jerusalem to Jericho, to reveal the true nature of his Father’s mercy. Indeed, the Good Samaritan models Jesus’ own behavior which is an expression of the behavior of his Father. Just as Jesus acts, so does God the Father.

In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, our Holy Father offers the image of the Good Samaritan to keep us mindful that the biblical message of mercy, compassion, kindness and love is a Gospel imperative that should be im-printed on the hearts of all those who strive to be good stewards of their life of faith.

GUESS WHO CAME TO DINNER???

I am grateful to the Knights of Columbus for hosting a dinner at St. Isidore rectory on Saturday evening, June 11th. The dinner was purchased by Admiral and Mrs. Robert P. Tiernan at the Knights of Columbus Crab Feed and Auction. The Knights descended on the rectory with a Chef, Barman, Waiters and musical entertainment. The dinner consisted of six courses: Frutti Di Mare; Zuppa; Salad; Pasta; Entrée (Filletto Di Manzo Brasato) and Dessert. A fine wine was paired with each course. Oops! next morning? Besides Fr. G. and I, the Admiral invited Msgr. Cardelli, Fr. Evan of San Damiano, family and close friends. As Pastor, I am thankful to the Knights for their constant efforts to create a community atmosphere at St. Isidore Parish. I am especially grateful for the $10,000.00 check they presented to Bishop Michael Barber for the Diocesan Capital Campaign: Reclaiming Christ’s Mission Together. St. Isidore Parish was given credit towards our Capital Campaign Goal of $2.4 million. The check was the proceeds from the Knights barbeque last Fall at Summit Ranch.

WELCOME FR. CARLOS ESPARZA, S.J. AND JESUIT SEMINARIAN SEAN SALAI

I look forward to welcoming Fr. Carlos Esparza to St. Isidore Parish, while on retreat, during the week of June 27th. Fr. Carlos will give the homily at all Masses on the weekend of July 2nd and 3rd. For the past year, Fr. Carlos has been assigned to a parish in Denver. We were blessed to have him at St. Isidore Parish during his diaconate and I look forward to welcoming another Jesuit seminarian, Sean Salai, who will be or-dained to the diaconate on October 22nd. In May, Sean was interviewed by Raymond Arroyo about his recently published book: What Would Pope Francis Do? The interview can be watched on u-tube by entering: Raymond Arroyo – What Would Pope Francis Do? Fr. Carlos, a business graduate of Harvard University, eventually hopes to continue his studies for a Doc-torate in Economics in preparation for teaching at a Jesuit University.

BISHOP BARBER CONVENES HIS PRIESTS!

Next Tuesday, June 21, our Bishop has summonsed the priests of the Diocese of Oakland to a meeting at Transfiguration Church, Castro Valley, to give an assessment of the state of our Diocesan finances. The meeting will be an opportunity for the priests to become familiar with strategic Diocesan matters. Bishop Barber is taking an intentional step in improving communication and understanding surrounding critical fi-nancial issues the diocese faces in the future. As Pastor, I will keep you informed.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION It’s almost midsummer day! One of the great hidden treasures of our liturgical calendar oc-curs this week. There are only three “nativity” feasts on our calendar: for the Lord, the Blessed Mother (September 8), and the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist on June 24. Friday’s date is an-chored by the Annunciation (March 25), when Mary learns not only of her own child’s advent, but of Elizabeth’s child. We are exactly half a year away from Christmas Eve. There are strong tradi-tions around this feast. Just as the winter solstice provides a rich vocabulary for Christmas, so does the abundance of light at midsummer inform this celebration. Just as at Christmas, a religious festival spills over into culture. As summer light reaches its peak, the sun-drenched zones of northern Europe see people staying up all night, kindling “St. John’s Fires” in the long summer twilight. Bonfires seem to be the unifying force in all these celebrations, kindled along the shores of the St. Lawrence in Quebec and Montreal, with harbor illuminations in France. You may be most interested in the custom in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the Baptist’s own city. People there will leap into the sea between midnight and dawn to honor John. Why not find your way to a pool, a lake, or a sandy beach this week and plunge in to recall your baptism? It’s a tradition!

Families Sharing Faith:

Today’s Gospel from Luke is perhaps one of the most poignant accounts of Jesus. Before this ex-change with his disciples, Jesus has already cured the possessed man, cured Simon Peter’s mother-in-law, cured the leper, taught the multitude about God’s love, healed the paralytic, healed the centurion’s slave, raised the widow’s son from death, pardoned the sinful woman, calmed the storm at sea, healed the Gerasene demoniac and Jairus’ daughter and the woman with the hemor-rhage. He had fed the 5,000 men plus women and children with 5 loaves and 2 fish.

Now, he is in praying in solitude and the dis-ciples are with him. He asks, "Who do the crowds say that I am?" What did Jesus feel as he asked? What answer did he expect, or hope for? And what did he think when the disciples answered: John the Baptist, Eli-jah, or one of the ancient prophets arisen?

Then, the Gospel says, he said, "But who do you say that I am?" Did Jesus hope--after all the miracles and teachings--they would final-ly understand? Today, we might reflect on that same question that Jesus asks, "Who do you say that I am?" We have the witness of Peter who was the first to reply to Jesus, say-ing Jesus is "The Christ of God." But when he turns to you and me, how shall we respond?

Question of the Week:

Whom do you see bearing a heavy cross? How can you offer support?

Discuss as a Family:

Discipleship means continually answering the question that Jesus asks, "Who do you say that I am?" We can answer in many ways: in prayer, in our words, in our decisions, in our participation in the community of faith, in our efforts to share his Good News with others. Who do you think an-swers Jesus' question effectively today? Name one way in which your life answers who you be-lieve Jesus to be.

Inquiry for Non-Catholics

Do you experience God calling you to learn about the Catholic faith?

Inquiry is a time when people who are interested in the Catholic Church begin to hear and see how our Christian community preaches and lives the Good News of Jesus Christ. In a relaxed environment we discuss all sorts of questions:

Is there any purpose to/in my life now?

Why is there evil in the world?

Why do the good suffer?

Why is life not fair?

If you are not a Catholic but would like to learn more about the Church, join us as we tell our “stories”, ask questions, learn & experience what it means to be Catholic.

Call Lyn Ford at 362-1905 to sign up or learn more.
