Message from Fr. Mike
hat is better, to overpromise and underdeliver or to under promise and overdeliver? I’m sure that for most of us we would like the latter. This last week I had a friend give me a jar of pickles. Now you might not
know this, but I am a bit of a pickle snob. If I have to buy them in the store, I always get the Claussen brand or other similar good tasing pickles. No soft and bland pickles for me! So, nothing was said about the pickles. She just handed me a jar as an af-terthought. I thought they were just a jar that she picked up from somewhere. Well, any-way, these pickles were amazing. Crispy, crunchy, right amount of dill, vinegar, chili, mus-tard seed, etc. I ate the whole jar in two days. Then later I asked her, where she got the pickles and she said she just “threw them together”. In today’s parable one son said he wouldn’t go to work, but he changed his mind and went. The other son said he would go but didn’t. Jesus was happier with the once who changed his mind. He under promised and overdelivered. Our works speak loudly. As people of faith let’s keep that in mind. People can talk all they want. What is better for us is to listen to what God wants, change our hearts to the degree we need to so that we can respond to that, and humbly do the work. That is even better than some overperforming pickles. Help for the Wildfires: Many people have been affected by the fires and many people have lost their homes. We are doing a second collection to help with some of the relief work that is being done in Southern Oregon. If you would like to make a contribution to that, please donate to the special basket or clearly mark and envelope for that collection. Catholic Combine: The following Wednesday, Sept. 23, we will be beginning our “Catholic Combine” classes at 7:00 pm. They are weekly classes for about an hour with Fr. Mike covering Bible study, the Catholic Catechism, Prayer, and Open Questions. All are welcome to come: live in the church, livestreamed on our YouTube channel, or listen to it on the Catholic Combine Pod-cast. Troubled Marriage Retreat: Retrouvaille is a marriage ministry program designed to help couples heal and renew their marriages. The Oregon Retrouvaille community will be holding its weekend October 2-4, 2020 at Mount Angel Abbey Retreat House in Mount Angel, Oregon. In compliance with Oregon and facility requirements, a limit of 12 couples can be accommodated. Masks must be worn during the weekend. For more information please contact the community at [email protected]. Free Food Boxes: We are currently waiting to hear back from a new supplier to provide our weekly free food boxes. ¿Qué es mejor, prometer en exceso y entregar menos o menos prometer y en-tregar en exceso? Estoy seguro de que a la mayoría de nosotros nos gustaría lo último. Esta última semana tuve un amigo que me dio un frasco de pepinillos. Puede que no lo sepas, pero soy un poco delicado con el tipo de pepinillos que
consumo. Si tengo que comprarlos en la tienda, siempre obtengo la marca Claussen u otros pepinillos similares de buen sabor. Entonces, no se dijo nada sobre los pepinillos que me regalo. Ella solo me entregó un frasco como una ocurrencia tardía. Pensé que era solo un frasco que ella recogió de algún lado. Bueno, de todos modos, estos pepinillos eran increí-bles. Crujientes, la cantidad justa de eneldo, vinagre, chile, semilla de mostaza, etc. Me co-mí todo el frasco en dos días. Luego, más tarde le pregunté de dónde había comprado los pepinillos y me dijo que simplemente "los tiró juntos (hechos en casa)". En la parábola de hoy, un hijo dijo que no iría a trabajar, pero cambió de opinión y se fue. El otro hijo dijo que iría, pero no lo hizo. Jesús estaba más feliz con el que había cambiado de opinión. Él prometió menos y entregó más. Nuestras obras hablan fuerte. Como perso-nas de fe, tengamos eso en cuenta. La gente puede hablar todo lo que quiera. Lo que es mejor para nosotros es escuchar lo que Dios quiere, cambiar nuestro corazón en la medida que lo necesitemos para que podamos responder a eso y hacer el trabajo con humildad. Eso es incluso mejor que algunos pepinillos de alto rendimiento.
