ST. JAMES THE APOSTLE CATHOLIC CHURCH MISSION STATEMENT

Rooted in the Catholic Faith, in order to build up the reign of God, the mission of St. James the Apostle Catholic Church is to live out the message of Jesus Christ by worshipping God by serving the world.

GOD’S ACTIONS NOW

When Jews celebrate the Passover, they always tell the story of the Exodus in present terms, as if they themselves experienced those events: when we were prisoners in Egypt; when God brought us out of slav-ery and through the waters of the sea. We would do well to follow their example and see the works of Je-sus and his sacrifice as being in the present, as hap-pening to us now. We believe that Christ’s work, his teachings, and his sacrifice on the cross were not just for his followers in the past, but for all people at all times. When we think of this in our prayers, we be-come one in faith with that great cloud of witnesses, the saints. We have been striving through Lent to repent of our sins and failings, and to follow Jesus more close-ly. Today in the story of the woman caught in adul-tery, we see Jesus forgiving the woman, saving her from a horrible death, and urging her not to sin any more. This is new, and brings out something for which the law had not allowed—forgiveness. Of course one can sin no more if one is dead, caught in one’s sins forever. But Jesus introduces the concepts of forgiveness and reconciliation. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Lenten Regulations

NORMS FOR FASTING AND ABSTAINING FROM MEAT Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obliga-tory days of abstinence.

For members of the Roman Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning absti-nence from meat are binding upon members of the Roman Catholic Church from age 14 onwards.

Those that are excused from fast and abstinence outside the age limits include the physically or mentally ill including individuals suf-fering from chronic illnesses such as diabetes. Also excluded are pregnant or nursing women. In all cases, common sense should prevail, and ill persons should not further jeopardize their health by fasting.

Confessions During Lent at St. James from 9:30 am until 10:30 am Fr. Lijo/Fr. Jim are available on Sunday mornings between Masses for confessions. Please check in with the office.

A PRAYER FOR HEALING

VICTIMS OF ABUSE God of endless love,

ever caring, ever strong, always present, always just:

You gave your only Son to save us by his blood on the cross.

Gentle Jesus, shepherd of peace, join to your own suffering

the pain of all who have been hurt in body, mind, and spirit

by those who betrayed the trust placed in them. Hear the cries of our brothers and sisters

who have been gravely harmed, and the cries of those who love them. Soothe their restless hearts with hope, steady their shaken spirits with faith.

Grant them jus ce for their cause, enlightened by your truth.

Holy Spirit, comforter of hearts, heal your people’s wounds

and transform brokenness into wholeness. Grant us the courage and wisdom,

humility and grace, to act with jus ce. Breathe wisdom into our prayers and labors.

Grant that all harmed by abuse may find peace in justice. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

~~ Pastor’s Message ~~ I know I can count on your support as I assume this additional new ministry. A most important way you can help me is to re-member to pray that young men be open to the call of God to consider the Roman Catholic Priesthood. There are many priest-ly vocations out there. We just need to pray for them and invite young men to consider the priesthood if God is indeed calling them.

May God continue to bless all of you as we journey in faith to-gether!

Peace always, Fr. James Michael Jankowski Pastor

Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. James the Apostle,

CALLED TO SERVE In July of 2010, I moved from my assignment as the pastor and rector of the Basilica of St. Josaphat in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to a new discern-ment phase in my life as I was assigned to be the parochial vicar (associate pastor) of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Las Vegas. I came to the Diocese of Las Vegas as a member of the Conventual Franciscan Friars of St. Bonaventure Province located in the Midwest. My purpose was to discern if God was calling me to offer my priesthood as a diocesan priest or if I should return back to religious life. After 3 years, I was finally incardi-nated (made a full-fledged member) as a diocesan priest of the Diocese of Las Vegas. That meant that, as of June 3, 2013, I was no longer a mem-ber of the Conventual Franciscan Friars.

When I came to the Diocese of Las Vegas it has always been my hope that I would be open to be of service wherever my ministry was needed. That openness led me to happily share my priesthood at three parishes (St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, St. John Neumann, and St. James the Apostle). In addition to parish ministry I was elected and continue to serve on the Presbyteral (Priests’) Council with the past three years having served as its Chairperson as well. Recently Bishop Thomas appointed me to serve a five-year term as a member of his College of Consultors through 2023.

On March 6th I received a call from Fr. Bob Stoeckig, Vicar General for the Diocese of Las Vegas. After a voting process of the priests of the Northern Deanery of our diocese, he said the bishop wanted to appoint me to a three-year term as the Dean of the Northern Deanery: would I accept? Humbled by the vote of confidence from my brother-priests, I said yes, remembering “my hope that I would be open to be of service wherever my ministry was needed.” Since this appointment had yet to be made public, I couldn’t say anything about it.

Fast forward to the Chrism Mass this past Monday, April 1. Along with the other priests and deacons of the diocese, I was vesting for the Mass in the temporary Parish Center at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. About 15 minutes before the Mass was to begin, Fr. Bob came to me and said, “Jim, you’re in the wrong building. You need to vest in the church’s sacristy.” Why? Well, Bishop Thomas wanted his Deans to process with him and be seat-ed in the sanctuary. My question was, “So is my appointment finally pub-lic?” Yes, even though no official and public communication about it had yet been made. Hopefully by the time you read this there will have been some official publication that I have been appointed the Dean of the North-ern Deanery, and Fr. Bill Kenny has been appointed the Dean of the Southern Deanery. There still is some dialogue about the appointment of the Dean for the newly-established Rural Deanery.

The role of a Dean consists in calling meetings of the priests and deacons of the Deanery and being a conduit between the Deanery, Bishop Thomas and the Presbyteral Council. It’s really not going to be too much more work. But, this additional appointment for me is a glaring reminder that we have a desperate need for more priests in this diocese.

Why am I sharing this with you? Well, some people might not understand the promise of obedience a priest makes to his bishop. I am now a priest of the Diocese of Las Vegas and have promised to serve my bishop wher-ever needed. Since there are so few of us, some have to wear multiple hats. I heartily believe that “if God calls you to it, he will lead you through it!”

Eighth Annual St. James Easter Clothing Drive

The Outreach Committee would like to ask your help with our Easter Outreach Program. For the next several weeks we will be holding our Eighth Annual St. James Easter Clothing Drive for Child Haven of Southern Nevada. When children are removed from their homes and placed into protective custody, they have few, if any, of their personal belongings. Child Haven provides a duffel bag filled with new clothing, toys and other items to children when they leave Child Haven to live with relatives or in a foster home. Child Haven does not receive funding to purchase the duffel bags and their contents. They rely on the gen-erosity of the community to help supply these basic ne-cessities. New and gently used items are needed to en-sure that they are able to continue to assist families and children in need. As part of our clothing drive for the children at Child Haven, we are asking for new under garments for boys and girls, ages 0 months to 17 years. Please help us by donating new socks, t-shirts and underwear in all sizes. Toiletries are also accepted; tooth brushes, tooth-paste, shampoo, etc. We will have boxes in the lobby for your clothing dona-tions or take your cash donations to purchase these items. Our goal is to collect and deliver our donation to Child Haven on Monday, April 29, 2019. If there are any questions, please contact Angie Bigas or the church office. Thank you for your continued support.
