REFLECT A single mother who has a child with special needs works two jobs and sacrifices much of her own pleasures in order to be available for her son. Being the best mother possible is important to her and brings her joy. We are willing to make great and often heroic sacrifices for those people and things that matter most to us. Unless there is something of obvious importance to us in our immediate path, we can easily approach life in a more haphazard and chaotic way. We jump from one thing to another, responding to whatever it is that is competing for our attention at that moment. When everything is important, nothing is important.

If we do not wear the right pair of glasses, we can get all too easily caught up in the superficial stuff and neglect paying attention to the things that really matter. The kingdom of God is like the pearl of great price that is worth selling everything for so that it can be obtained. Based on where I invest my time and energy each day, I really wonder whether I am serving God’s kingdom or my own. Have you ever considered tracking how you spend your time? You may be surprised! We allow our agendas to set the clock of our lives. We forget that joy and a true sense of purpose are not going to be found in following that timepiece. Joy is the expression of the happiness that is discovered when living in the kingdom of God. When our agenda matches God, not only do we leap for joy but God leaps with delight as well. Our well-being is what matters most to God.

Can you imagine God delighting in you? It is easy to deaden our senses to the whole reality of God and the joy that living the Gospel can bring. The demands of secular life and the agendas competing for our attention can quickly do that. We can get tired and spiritually apathetic. But if we can see our way through all of the conflicting voices and hear the voice of God, we can rediscover our zeal and passion and redirect our efforts. When we begin to see as God sees, we can rise each day and notice what really needs our attention and embrace it with exuberance. Be careful, though. It may not be what we originally had on our list. Responding to it, however, will be worth putting everything else aside.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION REGISTRATION

Religious Education Registration for the School Year 2020-21 is still underway. We are asking all students who plan to attend our program in the Fall to please register. We are making decisions on class size due to the directives from the State of Connecticut and the Archdiocese of Hartford. It is important to know how many students will be in each class, as there will be a cap imposed due to these directives.

Please contact the Religious Education Office at 860-973-1717 ext. 118 to register your students. If you have any questions, please call Pat Keck, Coordinator of Religious Education, ext. 117.

NEW MASS SCHEDULE The new Mass schedule will be in effect beginning Labor Day weekend, September 5th/6th and will be as follows:

Confessions will be on Saturdays at 3 pm at Holy Family Church and at 4 pm at St. Bernard Church. If only one priest is available that weekend, these times will have to be adjusted.

With the reopening of the Churches for Sunday Masses, we appreciate the cooperation of those attending. From registering for weekend Mass to keep the proper limit of 100 to using hand sanitizer. From observing the six foot distance from others by following the floor markings to wearing masks to help keep us all safe.

Please remember that the proper way to wear the mask effectively is to have the mask cover both your nose and mouth.

This is a different time for all of us and we are trying to do the best we can to promote proper procedures for everyone’s health. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we follow guidelines to keep everyone healthy and safe so we can continue to celebrate Mass together in our churches.

A MESSAGE FROM DEACON RICHARD

Dear parishioners of St. Jeanne Jugan Parish,

It is with mixed emotions that I am writing to inform you that Camille and I will soon be relocating to be closer to our children and grandchildren. This will be a big change for us, but we feel God is telling us it is the right decision. We anticipate leaving in early Fall.

It is not easy to leave the St. Jeanne Jugan community. Love and gratitude is the theme of the message that I want to leave with you. Everyone has been very supportive of my ministry. Our parish is a very vibrant and gifted community and I am grateful the Lord gave me the opportunity to serve here. I wish to thank Fr. Golas, Fr. Mathew, Deacon Vince and all of you truly loving and devoted parishioners that made my stay here so enjoyable and rewarding.

As my journey takes another path, I bring with me God’s blessing that has come through all of you. I give thanks for you and be assured that you will always be in my thoughts and prayers. Please accept my gratitude for the love this parish has shown to me and my wife.

DAILY MASS READINGS

At St. Bernard Church, there are no intentions noted this week for the chapel or sanctuary candles.

Contact the St. Bernard Church office for information about having the chapel or sanctuary candles burn for your intention.

DO NOT BE AFRAID The call of the Lord Jesus to serve him in the Holy Priesthood arises directly from the love of his Sacred Heart. He is still calling many more men today to leave their worldly desires and ambitions behind and set out on the great adventure of the Catholic Priesthood, to dedicate their lives to the glory of God and the salvation of souls.

A call to the priesthood usually begins with some attraction to priestly life and ministry, a call to give oneself to God in a deeper, more radical way. From there through prayer and participation in the Church's sacramental life, one usually is led to greater trust in beginning to take the first steps of answering God's call. If you think God may be calling you, do not be afraid!

The Lord God promised to send shepherds for his Church. Today, the people of God need good and holy priests who will proclaim the Gospel and celebrate the Sacraments for our world. If God is calling you, be courageous in answering, knowing that with St. Paul "we can do all things in him who strengthens us" (cf Phil 4:14). If you would like to discuss your calling, contact Fr. Michael Casey, Director of Vocations, Pastoral Center, at 860-761-7456, by e-mailing [email protected], or by visiting the web at www.hartfordpriest.com.

ST. JOSEPH MEDAL OF APPRECIATION

This year many diocesan events were cancelled or severely restricted. In March around the Feast of

St. Joseph, the Archbishop awards an Archdiocesan Medal of Appreciation to parishioners who

generously volunteer their time in service to their parish and community. The 2020 medal recipient

from St. Jeanne Jugan Parish is Mrs. Andrea Krajewski who has been involved in the altar decorations,

care of the sacristy and the vestments, is a member of the choir of St. Bernard Church, and has helped

out at the carnival. She kept the French fry booth supplied!

Andrea will receive the medal at the 10:30 am Mass on Sunday, July 26th at St Bernard Church.

Congratulations to Andrea, her husband Rich and her family. St. Jeanne Jugan Parish appreciates you

and everything you do!

REOPENING OF CHURCHES FOR WEEKEND MASSES IN

THE ARCHDIOCESE OF HARTFORD As of Saturday, July 4, 2020, parishes were able to reopen for the public celebration

of weekend Masses, provided that no more than a total of 100 socially distanced

persons are present at a given Mass in keeping with the limitation currently set by

the State of Connecticut. All previously set requirements for weekday Masses will

still be observed during weekend Masses. This includes the wearing of masks while in church and the limitation on singing, which may be done by a cantor but will not

include participation by the congregation.

In an effort to maintain no more than 100 people at each Mass, you will need to call the rectory during office hours to register for Mass.

Holy Family Church office hours are Monday through Friday, from 9 am to 4 pm

and St. Bernard Church office hours are Monday through Thursday from

9 am to 3 pm and Fridays from 9 am to noon.

The dispensation from the Sunday obligation granted to all Catholics of the

Archdiocese of Hartford by Archbishop Leonard P. Blair has been extended through Sunday, September 6. The elderly, the sick, those who care for someone who is

vulnerable, or those who are fearful or anxious are encouraged not to attend or feel obligated to attend at this time.

Live-streamed Masses, both daily and weekend, will continue on our website (sjjenfield.org) so that those who cannot attend will be able to participate and remain

connected with the parish.

If you decide to attend Mass, please be charitable by protecting others and yourself. Please read and follow the guidelines below.

• If you or someone in your household is ill, especially with fever or flu-like

symptoms or conjunctivitis, please do not enter the church.

• At all times, including entering and exiting the church, practice social distancing

by staying at least 6 feet from people who do not live in your household.

• You must wear a face mask or cloth face covering. The proper way to wear the mask effectively is to have the mask cover both your nose and mouth.

• Do not shake hands with others.

• Use hand sanitizers.

• Do not congregate to socialize before or after Mass.

AS WE WELCOME YOU BACK AND RESUME PUBLIC LITURGIES TOGETHER, PLEASE TAKE PRECAUTIONS TO STAY SAFE.
