The Vocation of Marriage and the Myth of Divorce
Brian Hanson
We addressed the value and vocation of marriage face-to-face with the de-Christianized forms our contemporary cultural climate takes, among which we find the wound of divorce. In this third part we’ll briefly touch upon the meaning of the indissolubility of marriage.
Marriage of its very nature is indissoluble, both as a natural institution created by God, and as a sacrament raised by Christ and participated in among the baptized. For the baptized, indissolubility takes on the specific form of being a vocation -- i.e. a calling from the Lord; but even for unbaptized persons, the logic of indissolubility is naturally reasonable for any couple who exchange marriage vows. In light of this, we come to understand that divorce is not only a moral and social evil that affects families and society; from a deeper level, divorce is an ontological impossibility, a thing that doesn’t actually exist in and of itself. When asked about divorce, the Lord Jesus himself affirms that it was never part of the structure of marriage which God created (see Mark 10:5-9).
In the civic sphere, a divorce can have public effects for persons, but those effects remain extrinsic to the interior nature of a person's state of being. On a deeper level, the inner structure of marriage, which is not something “added” to a person but interiorly defines his state of being in the world, remains unchanged for those who divorce.
The ideal of indissolubility is not some high standard that the Church places on married couples only to abandon them to meet it of their own power. As something that actually upholds and defends the dignity of human love, indissolubility is possible because God, who always intended to unite himself to his creatures, does so indissolubly through his son Jesus Christ. When spouses exchange vows, they can know that their words are true -- because Christ is the one who loved both spouses “to the end” from the Cross (see John 13:1), who fully assumed the risk of love, and gave his love to the spouses to participate in. In this way, the indissolubility of marriage, which draws upon the indissolubility of Christ’s love for us, witnesses to the dignity and vocation of marriage more generally.

BECOMING CHRISTIAN
Initiation for Adults—What is it?
For Christians, initiation means falling in love with Jesus and living as His disciples. Through the process of
becoming Catholic we try to help people learn how to respond to God’s call
for their everyday lives.
The way we learn to do this is by hanging out with Catholics and actually doing what Catholics do. The
process of becoming Catholic is about entering into a way of life as an apprentice learns from a Master and that
Master’s community.
Jesus is our Master and becoming Catholic is a lot like being His apprentices. The process for this
apprenticeship into the Christian way of life is called the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (often called RCIA). It involves encountering the Word of God in the Christian
community, worship and prayer and serving others.
If you are interested in becoming Catholic and responding
to God, call or contact Brian Hanson at
(602) 867-9171 ext. 311 or [email protected]

15TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 11, 2021
GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF
SCRIPTURE
July 11, 2021 Maybe the work is best left to the professionals. That’s how many people view the preaching of the Gospel. That’s the stuff priests, religious, deacons, lay ministers, and other professional Church people do. It has little to do with me. Well, that’s not really true. The fact of the matter is that preaching the Gospel has everything to do with you, with all of us who are baptized members of the Body of Christ. Nobody gets off the hook from that job. The question is, however, how do we do it? Well, there’s a safe way, which many choose, to preach the Gospel — and the risky way. The safe way pretty much keeps the Gospel in church and around like-minded people. I say my prayers, go to Mass, contribute to the food pantry, tithe, and attend Bible Study. That pretty much covers the bases, right? Wrong. The risky way is the more challenging way and for many, the “road less traveled.” Imagine those first disciples going out and into people’s homes. They must have had some amazing conversations with folks about God’s kingdom, changing their hearts, forgiving sins, and looking at the world differently. They must have met people who were hurting, exiled from their communities, neglected, lost, or living self-insulated lives in a society that served the rich and neglected the poor. While there were many who welcomed what they had to say and the conversations they had, there were others who no doubt rejected them and literally tossed them out on their ears! The Gospel, while being a message of joy and hope, is not always received well by those who are very comfortable keeping things as they are. The risky way involves example and conversation. We have to take the Gospel from church and carry it with us wherever we go. What kinds of conversations do we have with others? We interact with those closest to us, in our work, social circles, institutions, corporations, in politics, and beyond. Our conversations with others reveal a great deal about how we see things and what we consider important. If we are really interested in seeing God’s vision for the world succeed, then we will talk about it. It will become a part of our everyday conversation and find its way into our interactions with others. How will we preserve the dignity of human life and encourage others to have a relationship with God? We must be the example, live value centered, virtuous lives, stand against injustice, combating racism, and learn ways to resolve conflicts without violence. If we are going to succeed going forward, we have to find a way to bring our prayer centered lives into the marketplace. Our conversations have to change. Not everyone wants to hear what the Gospel has to say. That’s a risk God asks us to take.
