    Psalm Response: Year B

    I will praise you, Lord, you have rescued me

    It is astonishing how often Jesus ascribes healing to faith. Whenever He heals someone He points to the faith. Today we hear about a miraculous healing of a woman and Jesus saying: 'your faith has restored your health'. Jesus did not say, ‘I did it for you’ or ‘you were granted it’; instead He points to her faith as the source of the healing. Later, when people told Him about the death of a little girl, Jesus draws them to faith again: 'do not be afraid', He says, 'only have faith'! If someone openly had no hope about the recovery of the girl, He would dismiss him. 'He turned them all out' for they 'ridiculed Him' and He allowed only Peter, James, John and the child's mother and father to stay with Him. He allowed to stay only those who truly loved the girl and those closest to Him, when He said: 'Talitha kum!' - little girl, get up! The Lord told them to keep the healing secret, like so many times when He restored someone's health. Why? Perhaps for the same reason why we do not go public with our new beginnings, hopes, our hearts' desires. Christ promised that after His ascension He will send us His Spirit, who will empower us to do the same things as He did, ‘even greater’! If we live in His Spirit we also can heal and do miraculous things. The power of Christian faith has no limits; 'nothing can ever shake us', we sing today. The poison of Devil's envy has no power over us as long as we stay firmly in our faith. It is up to us, our free will, what we choose: uprightness and faith, which is immortal; or wickedness, which brings death.

    “Here is an initial update on how we are using the exceptionally generous

    response of the Catholic community to our Lent appeal. The total is now over £9m (before we receive UK Aid Match Funding from the Government). We had

    been planning a £2m programme to ensure provision of safe water for thousands of people. We are now significantly scaling up that programme which means that

    many thousands more people currently in dire need will be provided with sustainable water resources. This will have a huge and transforming impact on their lives. We will provide updates on progress in issues of CAFOD magazine (‘Side by Side’) and on our website. Once again thank you so much for the generosity that you & your community have shown to those in greatest need.”

    As you may know, Pope Benedict declared a Year of Faith from 11th October 2012 to 24th November 2013,

    to mark the 50th anniversary of opening of Second Vatican Council. The Year of Faith is an opportunity to reflect on and renew our faith so we can share it and lead others to Jesus. Each parish is invited and encouraged to mark the Year of Faith in some way;

    look out for further details soon. See www.portsmouthdiocese.org.uk/yearoffaith

    Please continue to pray for Fr. Anthony (formerly of

    OLoP), now in Nigeria. The curfew on his community in Kaduna has been relaxed to 7am-4pm; things are easier but still tense. He celebrated

    Mass for his parish last Sunday in the company of 12 armed guards. Please keep him in your prayers
