From the Principals Desk...Farewell Mrs Savage: Today we sadly farewell Mrs Erin Savage. Erin has been appointed to a teaching position in Kuwait that will allow her to also travel and connect with her family that are currently overseas.
Erin has been an absolutely amazing teacher at ST John Bosco for the past 10 years. During this time she has held many special responsibilities but specifically Sports Co-ordinator, Active Schools and Lets Go Co-ordinator and more recently shared the development of Special Character within our School.
We have loved and been incredibly lucky to have had Erin Teach at our school. She has been an authentic Catholic role model for our children and created during each of the 10 years the most supportive and inclusive learning environment, provided a quality programme of learning and always put the needs of her class of children at the top of her priorities.
We will really miss Erin, her support, her calming manner and hands on attitude. We wish Erin and her Husband Darren all the best in their exciting new journeys together. Our door will always be open for Erin as her’s was for all of us.
The following Gospel reading in my eyes portrays a picture of Erin:
Matthew 5:13-16A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. Jesus said to his disciples: “You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket: It is set on a lamp stand, Where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.” The gospel of the Lord.
Erin on behalf of the children, community, staff and Board of Trustees, we bless you and your family and ask God to be with you in all you do. Thank you for all you have done.
Welcome Mrs Lynskey: As we farewell Erin, we also welcome Mrs Melanie Lynskey who will take the roll of Long Term reliever in Room 6 for the remainder of the year. Melanie has been in school this week spending time in Room 6 and transitioning into the St John Bosco Community. We warmly welcome Melanie to our community and I am sure that you will over the next few weeks make Melanie feel at home. We are really excited to have Mrs Lynskey join the teaching team at ST John Bosco School.
Primary Teachers Strike Action: The Board has decided to close the school on Wednesday 15th August for strike action for the duration of the day to ensure the safety and care of our children. There will also be no after school care running on this day. School and after school care will resume as usual on Thursday. The strike is nationwide and affects all p r i ma ry sch o o l s a c ro ss N e w Zealand.

15th August - The assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary – New Zealand’s Patron Saint (Holy Day of Obligation)
What is a Holy Day of obligation? The obligation to participate in the Mass. The obligation to refrain from engaging in work or activities that hinder the worship owed to God. We do this on Sundays. In New Zealand, we now have only two of these additional holy days of obligation apart from Sunday. They are Christmas Day and the Feast of the Assumption of Mary, August 15.Mary’s assumption into heaven is also the Patronal feast of the Catholic people in New Zealand. Having now only two of these additional holy days of obligation is reason to celebrate them well. Consequently, from now on they are holy days of obligation whenever they fall, including Saturdays and Mondays.
As you are aware, our school will be closed on this Holy Day of Obligation. We were planning to attend 9am Mass as a whole school - we encourage you and your family,
to attend one of the Masses in our Parish on this day. As it is a Holy day there are extra Mass times:
Our Lady Help of Christians 9:10am and 5:30pmSt Joseph’s 8:00am and 12:05pm
Feast Days coming up in August…..10th St Lawrence 11th St Claire 14th St Maximilian Kolbe21st St Bernard 22nd St Pius 22nd Queenship of Mary
Pope Francis prayer intention for AUGUST - The treasure of Families That any far-reaching decisions of economists and politicians may protect the family as one of the treasures of humanity.
