THE SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER

Prayer and Liturgy

DEAR PARISHIONERS:

We celebrate with the rest of the world the official canonizations of Pope John XXIII and Pope John Paul, II. Each of them impacted the life of the Church, certainly from different perspectives, but with the same holiness of life. Pope John became pope following a diplomatic career representing the Church in various places in the

world and his perspective gave rise to the Second Vatican Council, which dramatically changed the life of the Church. Pope John Paul II became pope from his position as Archbishop of Krakow and certainly brought his experience of a persecuted Church under Communist rule to his papal role. His impact was based on the many years he served as pope as opposed to the very few years served by Pope John XXIII. Both brought gifts and talents to the church and both have left their imprint on the life of the Church. We rejoice as the Church officially acknowledges them and the holiness of their lives.

An issue that I have been considering for some time deals with the manner in which we receive the Eucharist. There was concern that perhaps there was not enough respect shown as people approached the altar to receive. Directives were sent out that people should show a sign of respect for the Eucharist they were to receive by a simple bow. Many of you are doing this in a very reverent manner and I applaud you.

My concern has to do with those choosing to do more. Some people are genuflecting or, even in some cases, falling on their knees to receive the Eucharist. The Church gives the option for a person to receive on the tongue or in one’s hands and this option should be respected by all Eucharistic ministers, clergy and lay alike. There has been no official announcement to my knowledge requiring or even suggesting that people do anything other than stand for Communion. My concerns center around those genuflecting or kneeling and the safety issues that this creates. Some of our parishioners are not as steady on their feet as they once were. To catch people off guard by these actions can certainly expose them to an injury if your actions cause them to lose their balance. While this is not the intent of any of you, I ask all of you choosing this option to consider these possibilities.

My second concern around these actions centers around the fact that this can draw inappropriate attention to us and our actions. The focus of our attentiveness should be the Eucharistic presence we are about to receive and not the person receiving. This is probably not the motivation of those choosing this option but, as a Minister of the Eucharist, I find that my attention is compromised when someone makes this choice. Please be aware that these actions do not make one holier than others. Having collectively expressed our unworthiness to receive in response to the priest’s elevation of the Sacrament at the altar, we are then called to humbly and respectfully receive the great gift that is ours in the Eucharist. Doing so, while standing, can be very reverent; there is no need to do more.

Thanks for listening,

Fr Tom

PLEASE PRAY for those who have asked for our

prayers: Betty Eager; Sandy McCarthy; Christina Meehan; Keyanna Meehan; Mercedes Rodriguez; Nancy Sherwood; Helen Teachout; and for all who are sick. When you call to add a name to our prayer list, please leave your name and number as a contact and let us know what the illness is. Before calling, please be sure you have spoken to the person or a member of the family about adding their name—we do not want to inadvertently disregard someone's desire for privacy.

Names of those who are sick or injured will be kept on the list for three weeks unless you specifically request a shorter period of time or call to ask that the name be removed. Boldface type is used for names that are new to the list this week.

ST. JOHN NEUMANN CHURCH RESTON, VIRGINIA APRIL 27, 2014

THIS SUNDAY’S READINGS: Acts 2:42-47; Psalm 118:2-4, 13-15, 22-24; 1 Peter 1:3-9; John 20:19-31

Today as Jesus appears to His Disciples after His resurrection, we experience Him in His glorious immortal body. St. Francis de Sales notes:

Alas how the faith of Jesus’ Apostles is shaken after His crucifixion! Assembled in a room with closed doors, they are filled with fear. Then Jesus enters, stands in their midst, and greets them: Peace be with you. Showing them the signs and marks of the reconciliation of humanity with God, He says see my hands and my side. Why does He do this? To bolster their vacillating faith. Without the presence of our Savior, they felt timid and lacked strength. Such is the case when one is without God. They were afraid. Like a ship tossed in a storm without a pilot, such was this poor boat. Our Lord appears to His disciples to bring relief to their fear .

What joy and celebration the Apostles experience when they see their Master in their midst. Jesus affirms their vacillating faith, assures their daunting hope and illumines their sacred love of God. Faith, hope, and holy love are necessary while we remain on earth. In heaven only holy love lives on. Especially with His Disciples during these days after His resurrection, and particularly in the apparition recounted today, Our Savior only does one thing: teach us that it is necessary to believe, to hope and to love.

He comes to bring safety in this place besieged of fear. He takes our miseries and ennobles them. Do you have need of strength? Here are my hands. Do you have need of a heart? Here is mine. His power gently gives us power. A living faith knows its power. Vivified by holy love, a living faith serves God as a faithful servant. May we be rooted in faith, joyful in hope and fervent in holy love, in which we will

rejoice for all eternity.

(Adapted from the writings of St. Francis de Sales)

NEXT WEEKEND’S READINGS: Next weekend

we celebrate the Third Sunday of Easter. Please prepare for Mass and the Homily by reflecting on these texts from God’s Word: Acts 2:14, 22-33 Psalm 16, our response to this reading, declares that the just will be spared corruption. Convinced of Christ’s resurrection, Peter uses this psalm to help his Jewish audience find the fulfillment of scripture in Christ. Psalm 16 You will show me the path of life God will not allow the faithful to experience final death. God will show us the path of life. 1 Peter 1:17-21 Why should we hope and believe in God? It is because God revealed Himself as the God of the living in the resurrection of His Son. Silver and gold are diminishable securities. Christ has saved us by His priceless blood. Luke 24:13-35 Luke articulates Easter faith for every generation that has not seen but wishes to believe. We must persevere on the road of faith until the cross of defeat is truly seen to be the source of salvation. This vision comes slowly. It is in the constant return to the bread of word and sacrament that we most clearly recognize Christ present in the lives of our brothers and sisters.

Catechumenate. Andrea Ataucusi, Jan Bustillo, Shelsey Bustillo, Brianna Jacobs, Joshua Jacobs, Kevin Mejia-Cruz, Gisselle Reyes, Ortila Rodriguez, Kenneth Rudolph, Elizabeth Schultz and Johnny Serbellon enter into the life of Christ through the waters of baptism. They are sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit in the sacrament of confirmation and receive Jesus in the Eucharist for the first time.

FAMILY MASS NEXT WEEKEND Next Saturday evening, May 3

at 6:30pm, with our featured PG-rated animated flick, “Frozen”. The film tells the story of a fearless princess who sets off on an epic journey alongside a rugged, thrill- seek-ing mountain man, his loyal pet reindeer, and a hapless snowman to find her estranged sister, whose icy powers have inadvertently trapped the kingdom in eternal winter (sound familiar?). Our evening begins with ice cream and sprinkles; everyone from 1 -100 is encouraged to come! Children are invited to bring their sleeping bags, pillows or bean bags and recline on the floor. Children must be ac-companied by an adult. There is no admission charge. Please join us for the fun and fellowship! If you have ques-tions contact Sue Colyer at [email protected] or 703 -860-6149

PROGRESS REPORT FROM

ST. ANN'S CENTER FOR

CHILDREN, YOUTH AND FAMILIES

St. Ann's Center for Children, Youth and Families completed renovations and furnishings for Hope House this past November and held an Open House with a Dedication officiated by Cardinal Donald Wuerl on December 7

th.

Our first Hope House families were welcomed in December. We have utilized our existing intake process to admit families who are most appropriate for, and will have success in, our program. At present, we have a total of five families with a I0-family capacity, and space that once refurbished will expand capacity to 15 families.

Hope House mothers receive 24/7 staff guidance. After completing their orientation, residents attend regular house meetings, and perform 20 hours of community service per week until they are working full-time. They receive the following services, all on-site: Life Skills Classes Parenting Classes Counseling with a Social Worker Counseling with a Job Coordinator

Residents also have access to: Education (High School or GED Classes) Licensed, On-Site Quality Child Care Mental Health Counseling Financial Literacy Classes Nutrition Classes

As funding permits, Hope House families attend cultural events such as a recent evening with the Ringling Brothers/Barnum & Bailey Circus at the Verizon Center.

The role of the Social Worker, which is funded in part with support of the St. John Neumann Community, is very important in the process by which Hope House families begin to heal from past trauma and acquire new skills, education and confidence for their futures. The Social Worker establishes a positive relationship with our mothers, works with them on their service plan, coordinates the services needed to accomplish goals, and encourages them when they have succeeded, as well as when they are challenged. The Social Worker at St. Ann's has filled all those roles. as she works with Hope House residents. As a result, our families have so far experienced: • 16 Life Classes • 16 Parenting Skills Classes • 59 Individual Social Worker Appointments 6 Children enrolled in St. Ann's Community Child

Care Center

PASTORAL COUNCIL NEEDS YOUR HELP! Are you interested in increasing your involvement in parish life at St. John Neumann? Why not consider serving on the pastoral council? The focus is on engaging parishioners in the life of the parish through worship, community activities, and volunteer service.

Annually parishioners elect members to the Council who serve rolling 3-year terms, so there are always experienced members on the Council to orient new members. The Council meets monthly throughout the school year, so your annual commitment is very manageable.

Here are some of the many benefits of being part of the Council:

You will work with a great group of individuals to enrich parish life and parish community involvement.

You will ensure that the voice of the parishioner is heard and considered when making decisions.

Your life within the parish and your knowledge of the parish will be enhanced significantly.

The council election will take place the weekend of May 31

st - June 1

st. If you have an interest in

serving on the Council, or know someone who would be a good candidate, let us know. Take a close look around the pews and at parishioners with whom you share ministries. Maybe you’ll spot someone who

would really be an asset to the Council. Plant a seed, and encourage them to prayerfully consider this opportunity to serve! Please submit your nomination with the name of the nominee, phone number and email address to Father Tom at [email protected] by this Wednesday, April 30th at 4:00pm. At that point, you will be contacted about additional information we need from you for publicizing the candidates. If you have questions or would like more information, please email Mary Klein [email protected] or phone her at 571-643-8606.

CATHOLIC HOME MISSIONS APPEAL Many

dioceses right here in the United States do not have enough priests and trained lay ministers to serve their parishes. These dioceses are known as home missions. The Catholic Home Missions Appeal will take place this weekend to support these dioceses by funding essential ministries, including seminary education and lay ministry training. Please be generous in this Appeal and share your resources to strengthen the Church at home.

Additional Stewardship

GIVE THE GIFT OF FAITH More and more Catholics are responding to the idea of giving a gift that perpetuates our Catholic faith. Please consider remembering St. John Neumann in your will. By doing so, you establish a legacy of love for others by enabling the Church to continue the expansion of our Catholic faith through its many ministries. For more information on naming our parish and the diocese in your will, please call Lou Ann in the Planned Giving office at the Diocese of Arlington at 703-841-3819 or visit www.arlingtondiocese.planyourlegacy.org
