Two men are hav-ing lunch together. One is Catholic and the other Jewish. They worked to-gether for a number of years now and got along
pretty well. They considered themselves friends and got together socially from time to time. On this particular day the conversation came around to religion and Keith, the Catholic guy, asked, “Why don’t Jewish people believe in Je-sus?” Nathan replied that Jewish people did not believe that the Messiah would be hung on a cross. For them, the Messiah would come in great glory. They saw Jesus as a prophet, but not the Messiah. Then Nathan said, “We believe that God actually chose us—-we are God’s peo-ple and the Lord will know the right time and place to send the Messiah.” I think there is something to be said for that kind of perspective—-realizing that the Lord is the one who chooses. What’s that other phrase from Scripture, “It was not you who chose me but I who chose you”. And St. Paul says this to us today: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ; he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, to be holy and blameless in his sight.” You are chosen—-you are a chosen per-son. God chose you. That’s what it says in Scrip-ture: “God chose us in Christ”. This means that the infinite God loved you into existence. Think about that! You are not here on this earth as a mere whim. You were meant to be here. What is the reason God has chosen you? Well, first of all, so that you can never forget that you are important to God, and second, that you do his will in your life, and third, that you draw others to Him.
Most of the people in our world think lit-tle of God. Most do not pray at all. But, in some cases, when a person hits bottom, she/he is open to believing in God, even if it’s through a weak faith at first. So, God wants us to depend upon Him in the ups and downs of life. And we can never for-get: without Christ there is no salvation. We can-not be saved unless we learn to believe and trust in God. And God will give you the grace to trust Him. What we are asked to do in faith is to give God our life. Here’s a little example. It has nothing to do with politics, but when President Reagan was shot, he almost died. In the days and weeks following that experience Reagan really came to believe that God had spared his life. He was not only grateful, but he learned to pray, “God, my life is yours, take it and do with it what you want.” That’s what the disciples had to learn as they were forced out of their comfort zones and were transformed by God’s grace. They eventu-ally found their completeness in Christ. Because of our Baptism we are asked to come to the same realizations. So, give God your life. Entrust Him with it. And you will see why he chose you.
July 20: St. Apollinaris
Bishop, martyr, and possible disciple of St. Peter. Apollinaris was born in Antioch, Turkey, and became the first Bishop of Ravenna, in Italy. He suffered exile because of his preaching and converts. When Em-peror Vespasian banished Christians, Apollinaris was beaten by a mob and reputedly died soon after from his wounds. His shrine in the Ben-edictine Abbey of Classe in Ravenna was once a popular pilgrimage destination. Apollinaris was credited with many miracles. He also ap-peared to St. Romuald, the founder of the Camaldolese. He is patron of Ravenna, Burthscheid, Aachen, Remagen, and Düsseldorf, and he is invoked against gout, epilepsy, and other diseases. Apollinaris is de-picted as a Bishop in liturgical art. Source: catholic.org/saints/saint.php?saint_id=1486
July 22: Feast of St. Mary Magdalene
Except for the mother of Jesus, few women are more honored in the Bible than Mary Magda-lene. Yet she could well be the patron of the slandered, since there has been a persistent leg-end in the Church that she is the unnamed sin-ful woman who anointed the feet of Jesus in Luke 7:36-50.
Most Scripture scholars today point out that there is no scriptural basis for confusing the two women. Mary Magdalene, that is, “of Magdala,” was the one from whom Christ cast out “seven demons” (Luke 8:2)—an indication at the worst, of extreme demonic possession or possibly, se-vere illness.
Writing in the New Catholic Commen-tary, Father Wilfrid J. Harrington, O.P., says that “seven demons” “does not mean that Mary had lived an immoral life—a conclusion reached only by means of a mistaken identifica-tion with the anonymous woman of Luke 7:36.” In the Jerome Biblical Commentary, Father Ed-ward Mally, S.J., agrees that she “is not...the same as the sinner of Luke 7:37, despite the later West-ern romantic tradition about her.”
Mary Magdalene was one of the many “who were assisting them [Jesus and the Twelve] out of their means.” She was one of those who stood by the cross of Jesus with his mother. And, of all the “official” witnesses who might have been chosen for the first awareness of the Resurrec-tion, she was the one to whom that privilege was given. She is known as the “Apostle to the Apos-tles.”
Mary Magdalene has been a victim of mistaken identity for almost 20 centuries. Yet she would no doubt insist that it makes no difference. We are all sinners in need of the saving power of God, whether our sins have been lurid or not. More importantly, we are all “unofficial” witness-es of the Resurrection.

July 21: St. Lawrence of Brindisi
At first glance, perhaps the most remarkable quality of Lawrence of Brindisi is his outstanding gift of languages. In addition to a thorough knowledge of his native Italian, he had complete reading and speaking ability in Latin, Hebrew, Greek, German, Bohemian, Spanish, and French. Lawrence was born on July 22, 1559, and died ex-actly 60 years later on his birthday in 1619. His par-ents William and Elizabeth Russo gave him the name of Julius Caesar, Caesare in Italian. After the early death of his parents, he was educated by his uncle at the College of St. Mark in Venice. When he was just 16, he entered the Capuchin Franciscan Order in Venice and received the name of Lawrence. He completed his studies of philosophy and theology at the University of Pad-ua and was ordained a priest at 23. With his facility for languages Lawrence was able to study the Bible in its original texts. At the re-quest of Pope Clement VIII, he spent much time preaching to the Jews in Italy. So excellent was his knowledge of Hebrew, the rabbis felt sure he was a Jew who had become a Christian. Lawrence’s sensitivity to the needs of people—a character trait perhaps unexpected in such a tal-ented scholar—began to surface. He was elected major superior of the Capuchin Franciscan prov-ince of Tuscany at the age of 31. He had the com-bination of brilliance, human compassion, and administrative skill needed to carry out his duties. In rapid succession he was promoted by his fel-low Capuchins and was elected minister general of the Capuchins in 1602. In this position he was responsible for great growth and geographical expansion of the Order.
Lawrence was appointed papal emis-sary and peacemaker, a job which took him to a number of foreign countries. An effort to achieve peace in his native kingdom of Naples took him on a journey to Lisbon to visit the king of Spain. Serious illness in Lisbon took his life in 1619. In 1956, the Capuchins completed a 15-volume edition of Lawrence's writ-ings. Eleven of these 15 contain his sermons, each of which relies chiefly on scriptural quotations to illustrate his teaching.
His constant devotion to Scripture, coupled with great sensitivity to the needs of people, present a lifestyle which appeals to Christians today. Law-rence had a balance in his life that blended self-discipline with a keen appreciation for the needs of those whom he was called to serve. July 23: St Bridget
Bridget was the daughter of a wealthy governor who used his riches gener-ously. He donated money for good causes and helped the poor. He worked for the just and fair treatment of all the people. Bridget, who was born in 1303, learned these lessons early in her life. Bridget married into the Swedish royal family and lovingly raised eight chil-dren, one of whom came to be known as St. Catherine of Sweden. Bridget and her husband followed her father’s example of caring for people in need. It is said that she even arranged for a hospital to be built on their estate. The hospital was open to all. When her husband died, Bridget gave away all her possessions. She founded a double monastery for men and women who lived apart, but worshipped together. The religious order was known as the Order of the Most Holy Saviour, or the Brigit-tines. When Bridget learned of an epidemic in Rome, she made a pilgrimage there to assist the sick and dying. While in Rome, she spoke out against the injustices she saw and worked to change situations that kept all people from living a good life. Her words and ac-tions influenced government and Church officials, even the pope! Bridget made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land to see the places where Jesus taught, died, and rose from the dead. During her pilgrimage Bridget experienced Christ’s presence in prayer visions. Bridget died after she returned to Rome, but her body was eventually returned to her land and the people she loved and cared for. Her coffin was carried reverently through Europe to Sweden, and she is buried at the monastery she founded. Because of her holiness, Bridget was declared a saint only 18 years after her death in 1373. She is the patron saint of Sweden. In 1999, Pope John Paul II honored her once more: St. Bridget was named co-patron saint of all of Europe along with St. Catherine of Siena and St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, who was known as Edith Stein in life. We honor St. Bridget, also known as St. Birgitta, on July 23 each year. We can pray to Bridget, asking her to help us to love and care for our neighbor as she did.
