G O D H A S A D I F F E R E NT P L A N
We begin the season of Advent with a heartfelt
call for our own repentance. We remember God's faithful love for us, and call upon God to
help us to turn back. For "behold, you are angry,
and we are sinful" (Isaiah 64:4). In the first read-
ing and in the psalm, we recall God's promises and lament our unfaithfulness and our guilt. We
call upon God's might and power in order to save
us. With Isaiah, we ask God to "rend the heavens
and come down, / with the mountains quaking
b e f o r e y o u " ( I s a i a h 6 3 : 1 9 ) . Yes, God is faithful to us, because we are the
work of God's hands. God is the potter, we are the
clay. And yet, our concept of how God will come
to save us is rooted in our own expectations of a warrior God who crushes mountains and thun-
ders into our lives with great noise and glory. But
God has a different plan: the Incarnation.
TODAY'S READINGS
First Reading -- We are the clay and you,
O LORD, are the potter: we are the work of your
hands (Isaiah 63:16b-17, 19b; 64:2-7).
Psalm -- Lord, make us turn to you; let us see
your face and we shall be saved (Psalm 80).
Second Reading -God is faithful; by God you
were called to fellowship with the Son (1 Cor 1:3-9)
Gospel -- Be watchful! Be alert! You do not
know when the time will come. (Mark 13:33-37)

brance Day

STANDING WATCH. ALWAYS READY. We are challenged not to slide easily into this new
liturgical year. We must be on guard. We must be ready to act in the ways Saint Matthew laid out
last Sunday (Matthew 25:1-13). Simply stated, Christ the King says heaven-worthy acts are works
of mercy. These spiritual and corporal works offer needed guidance for weekly behavior.
What work of mercy needs doing?
What will I do this week to work on it?
How can I engage others to help?
CORPORAL WORKS OF MERCY ● Feed the hungry ● Give drink to the thirsty ● Shelter the home-
less ● Clothe the naked ● Visit the sick ● Visit the prisoners ● Bury the dead ● Give alms to the
poor ● Care of our Common Home ● Spiritual Works of Mercy ● Counseling the doubtful ● Ins-
tructing the ignorant ● Admonishing the sinner ● Comforting the sorrowful ● Forgiving injuries ●

St. John the Apostle Church
One who aspires to the grace of God must be pure, with a heart as innocent as a child’s. —St. Nicholas
"The right to life is the first among human rights. To abort a child is to kill someone who can not defend himself." Pope Francis
El derecho a la vida es el primero de los derechos humanos. Abortar un bebe es matar
a alguien que no puede defenderse a si mismo. Papa Francisco
HOLIDAY OUTREACH
Each year, students of the religious education program
participate in the Holiday Outreach program through
Catholic Charities, but we need you!
The Christmas season brings lots of anticipation and
joy. We think about the birth of our Lord, Jesus
Christ, family gatherings, special meals and of course
presents.
For many, family gatherings, special meals and pre-
sents are just wishes. As we celebrate this Jubilee Year
of Mercy we are reminded “Let us not love
with words or tongue but with actions and intruth” .
There are 2 large boxes, decorated and marked
“Holiday Outreach” in the lobby of the Church for do-
nations. All items MUST be NEW and UNWRAPPED .
The collection will end Dec. 12 th . Besides toys, other
needed items are clothing, sheets, towels, etc.
There will be a poster board by the boxes listing
a variety of items in need.
Please be as generous as possible.
Thank you and God Bless!
We are happy to announce a new creative booklet for a youngest parishioners. This booklet is based on the Mass Sunday readings and will help teach our children about Catholic faith. The booklets are on the table in the back of the Church.
