May 15, 2016, Pentecost Sunday
Dear Parish Family,
The feast of the Pentecost has its roots in Judaism. The Jewish feast of Passover (commemorating the release from captiv-ity) finds fulfillment in the feast of Weeks
(pentecostes in Greek), commemorating the Sinai covenant. Simi-larly, Easter, celebrating the divine victory over the shame of death by crucifixion, finds its fuller meaning in the enlivening of the Christian community through the gift of the Holy Spirit. On mount Sinai the law was written on tablets of stone and they became the foundational edict of the ‘People of God’. In the New Testament, the laws are written on the hearts of the new believers and the Church is born. The thrust of Luke's history of the early Church in Acts is to illustrate how the risen Lord works through the commu-nity through its empowerment by the Holy Spirit. Weak Peter be-comes a forceful leader. Incredulous disciples move from dejection into mission. The signs and wonders worked in Jesus' ministry by the power of the spirit now continue in the ministry of the “People of the Way.” Peter, addressing the Jerusalem authorities in Acts 11, can speak of Pentecost as the time “when we came to believe in the Lord Jesus.” (Acts 11:17) Finally, empowered for their prophetic mission, they came to full faith in Jesus' lordship over their lives.
Few expressions so succinctly summarize what is asked of us as Christians at the feast of the Pentecost, as does the expression: “to live in the Spirit.” Too often, however, this phrase is used in a way that is too pious, too over-charged with charismatic fervor, or too theologically abstract to have much meaning for ordinary people. It may well summarize Christian life, but it can also be little more than a very vague platitude. What does it mean “to live in the Spir-it?”
St. Paul, in attempting to specify this, is anything but piously delud-ed or theologically abstract. Rather he speaks with a clarity that leaves almost no room for vagueness or false sentiment. He ex-plains it by telling us that, if in our lives there is “lewd conduct, impurity, licentiousness, idolatry, sorcery, hostilities, bickering, jealousy, outbursts of rage, selfish rivalries, dissensions, factional-ism, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and the like”, then we are NOT living in the Spirit. Conversely, we are living in the Spirit when, in our lives, there is “charity, joy, peace, patience, endurance, kind-ness, generosity, faith, mildness, and chastity.” (Gal 5:22)
This is a valuable insight because, if we take Paul’s word’s serious-ly, we can never delude ourselves into identifying true life in the Spirit with what it is so often confused with, namely, false piety and over-privatized sentiment. When the fruits of the Spirit are ab-sent, irrespective of how spiritually confident and self-righteous we might feel or how right our cause might seem, then the Spirit too is absent. We must be clear about this. The Spirit is present only when charity, joy, peace, patience, endurance, kindness, generosity, faith, mildness, and chastity are deeply in our lives—and permeate the air around us. We thank God for His blessings on our Children who received First Communion on 7 May and Confirmation on May 11. Our special thanks to the Religious Ed. Teachers who prepared them for the Sacraments. Fr. Tom Kunnel C.O.

el día de Pentecostés;
