REFRESH - WednesdaysWill continue after church renovations.

The readings for this Sunday force us to take a closer look at the whole concept of success. In the Gospel reading, the man is convinced that he is a success because he is a rich farmer. What should he do now that he has succeeded in harvesting more grain than he can store? Build another silo, of course. The basis of his success is his grain. When he suddenly dies, his success remains here, and he goes on to God empty handed.

The whole mindset that success is predicated on salary is based on a fallacy that was very clear to the author of the first reading. He is sometimes called Qoheleth, in the Old Testament book called Ecclesiastes. “Vanity of vanities,” says Qoheleth, “All is vanity.” Many times one flatters oneself, incorrectly, by viewing him/herself successful by his or her appearance, achievements, titles and possessions. Our scripture readings remind us that it is better to grow rich in the sight of God. A person is on the road to success if he or she can draw closer to God and attract others to do likewise.

Success is predicated on how each of us is becoming more and more the reflection of God that we were created to be. Success is predicated on our ability to assume the person of Jesus Christ. Success is not a present reality, it is a goal, the goal of Christian life. The goal is reached, the life is successful, when every aspect of life reflects the person of Jesus Christ. That is success. All else is vanity.

A BIG THANK YOU from our bishop, diocese, parish and I for making our parish target of $176,000 in pledges for the 2016 Annual Catholic Appeal. We made 102.93% of this target in pledges. Please make sure that you honor the pledge you made. Your support of the diocesan appeal allows the diocese to carry on with the various ministries that they offer for education, for the migrant, for the needy. It is our way of sharing collectively in the compassion that we celebrate in this Year of Mercy. God reward your generosity. Thank You!

Time Capsule: In preparation for our Parish’s 60th Anniversary Celebration, in the fall, a time capsule will be placed under the altar steps. You are welcome to sign the designated pages that will be placed in this capsule as witnesses to this particular anniversary. These pages are found at the entrance of the hall/gym for now and later at the entrance of the church or presently in the parish office. Please feel free to sign your name, only once is necessary. The capsule will be buried inside the church at a musical program celebrating the jubilee in mid November. The Parish Celebration of this 60th Jubilee and renovation of the church will be at the 11:30 Mass on Sunday, November 27th with Bishop Malooly presiding.

-Fr. Joe

Please note: The Parish office closes on Fridays at 4pm.

Eucharistic Ministers

Donations of sandwiches are welcome from all parishioners. Delivery can be made to the hall kitchen door on Thursday evenings 6:30pm to 7:00pm and Friday morning before 9:30am. These sandwiches are taken to the Emmanuel Dining Room to help feed those in need. We are especially in need of sandwiches on the 1st and 4th Fridays of the month.

VOCATIONS In today’s gospel, Jesus speaks of those “who store up treasure for themselves,” contrasting them with those who are “rich in what matters to God.” That’s another way of speaking about those who are only concerned with what they want and those who are concerned with finding out and accomplishing what God wants. Where do you fall along that scale? If you haven’t already made a lifetime commitment, what are you doing to find out what God wants you to do with your life? Maybe He’s calling you to serve as a priest or a deacon, or as a religious brother or sister.

Want to explore that possibility? Call or write Father Norm Carroll, Diocesan Director of Priestly and Religious Vocations (302-573- 3113, [email protected]). Find us online at www.cdow.org/vocations!

HITTING IT BIG

It seems to be commonly accepted nowadays that everyone wants to win the lottery, hit the slots big at the casino, or be a millionaire. This attitude is akin to what the first hearers of the parable of the successful farmer would have thought: Why, of course he'd want to find a way to preserve his good fortune for the future, to secure for himself a life of leisure, eating, drinking, and merriment. It's exactly the kind of life that the right ticket, hand of cards, or quiz show answer might bring us today. Being surrounded by this "common wisdom" makes the words of Qoheleth, the psalmist, Paul, and Jesus all that much harder to hear today. Perhaps good fortune will be ours, perhaps it will not be. But if we make that fortune or the quest for it the heart, the very center, of our lives, then we will live to regret it. We will not achieve the future security we pursue, and we will lose the present moment in the chase.

Those that have dedicated weeks to serving others understand, hitting it big doesn’t always come from receiving, rather, from the giving.Youth Ministry needs your help and service! We are in need of those that want to walk with our youth and lead them on Sunday evenings. We promise, this will be rewarding and provide a fortune of opportunity.

Call 999-0211 or email [email protected] to learn more.

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA), the process by which a person is brought into full communion in the Catholic faith, will begin at St. John the Beloved on Monday September 12th at 7:00 PM in the St. John Bosco Conference Room.

As many Catholics have come to realize, our faith is a treasure which takes a life time to fully appreciate. Yet for a variety of reasons many good people have turned away from the active practice of the faith in their daily lives. Some have bought into the secular message that the gospel is no longer relevant in a modern society. Or, others have lost a sense of the mystery of God and his place in their lives.

In assisting candidates in the RCIA process we have seen firsthand how the deep longings of the human spirit cannot be satisfied only by what the world has to offer. Our St. John’s candidates have come first and foremost because they recognized a void in their lives that was not being fulfilled. What draws people to RCIA is:

• A longing to become connected to a faith community • The desire for families to be united in their faith and worship together • For parents of students in our school to become more familiar with the faith • For spouses to share together in the fullness and depth of the Eucharist

Do you see yourself in any of these situations? Do you know someone who might benefit from RCIA; someone close to you, a friend, a neighbor, a spouse, or an adult child? If your answer is yes, then you are invited to respond to this invitation. “Come and See” for yourself what the RCIA process is all about on Monday September 12th. You will be glad you did!

There are brochures in the back of the hall which describe the process. Please take one and contact Deacon Tom Bailey at 302-559-6458 or [email protected] for answers to questions or to register.

In the Gospel this week Jesus reminds us that possessions are not what matter. We must not be greedy or worry about material wealth. Rather we must be rich in what matters to God. Bring It Home this week by reminding the family to be happy with what they have. Challenge each family member to make it through the week without beginning a sentence with “I want”, ”I need”, or “I wish I had”.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION --Rev. James Field

Sometimes the treasures of art can provide us with clues about traditions. Take, for example, the miter, the conical hat with lappets, or back-flaps that fall to the shoulders. This cap is worn by bishops in the Catholic West. Eastern Catholics favor a crown, but we have this curious headpiece. In Greek, the word means "turban." Old paintings and mosaics provide clues about headgear for bishops, and there is very little artistic evidence for the miter before the year 1000. Before then, some kind of head covering might have been worn to offset the damp and chill of unheated churches. The pope, as far back as the seventh century, often wore a cap called a camelaucum. Around that time, artists painting St. Peter began to portray their subject wearing this hat. By the year 1000 or so, the pope began to grant similar helmet-shaped headgear as gifts to visiting abbots and bishops. They returned home with these new chapeaus, and before long everybody wanted one!

Today, miters are granted not only to bishops, but to certain favored abbots and occasionally abbesses. Pope Benedict XVI set aside the tradition of the papal tiara in favor of the miter, even on his coat of arms. Pope Paul VI was the last pope to have a coronation. As recently as the 1960s, miters were towering skyscrapers of jewels and rich silks, but now a simplicity of style is favored by bishops. Miters are here to stay, and experienced altar servers know how to await the bishop's removing of the miter, since he does not wear it when he is saying the presidential prayers or the Eucharistic Prayer.
