Father Don’s Gospel ReflectionThe First Sunday of Lent — Mark 1:12-15

“The Spirit drove Jesus out into the desert, and he remained in the desert for forty days, tempted by Satan. He was among wild beasts, and the angels ministered to him.” This past Wednesday we began our Lenten journey. Many of us began Lent receiving ashes on our foreheads. As we were signed with ashes, we were told to repent and believe in the Gospel. It is the message Jesus proclaimed to those around him. He tells us that the kingdom of God is at hand. The time for waiting is over; the kingdom is all around us.

Jesus spent forty days in the desert. He was led by the spirit yet tempted by Satan. What a power struggle that must have been, not only physically, but spiritually as well. The journey into the desert perhaps was a time for clarity. When Jesus’ time was up in the desert, his mission was present before him. There was a sense of urgency once the arrest of John had taken place. Jesus was the one that everyone was awaiting—the Messiah was among them. As we enter the Lenten season, once again we begin our own journey into the desert. This is the time when we can look at our own life and see how aware we are of the kingdom. It is a time to examine how well we are doing in believing in the Gospel. It is not enough to say, “We believe”; we also must show by our life that we are Gospel people. The Lenten season is a time when we can discover the obstacles in our lives that keep us from being active members of the kingdom. We might find our way to the sacrament of reconciliation to repair our relationship with God. There is no better way to start Lent than with the call for each of us to repent. The same spirit that was with Jesus in the desert is a part of each of our lives. We do not make this journey of Lent alone or isolated.

The season of Lent can be such a rich time in our spiritual lives. There are many opportunities to enrich Lenten journey. Here at St. John we have our Parish Mission coming up. We also have a Tuesday night Mass you might want to make time for in your busy week. Of course there are many reconciliation services in the area where you can celebrate the sacrament of forgiveness. Try to do something meaningful during the season of Lent. Work on being other-centered rather than self-centered. Lent is not only a time of “giving up” things but also time to do acts of kindness for others. It is a time not only to pray for you but pray for others as well. Perhaps by your actions you may draw others to the Gospel and lead them into a deeper relationship with God. The journey of Lent is one that prepares us for the great joys of Easter. Lent is a great time to strengthen our relationship with the Lord. Let us support one another in this rich season of Lent. Have a great week!

Focus on EucharistThis week the young people of the parish who are preparing for Eu-charist will reflect on what Jesus celebrated at the Last Supper. The Eucharistic prayer is the Church’s great prayer of thanksgiving. At the Eucharist, through the power of the Holy Spirit, we join with the living Christ to give praise and glory to the Father. How are we as a parish gathering to remember and celebrate Jesus?

From Archbishop SchnurrThe III Extraordinary General Assembly which took place last October focused on The Pastoral Challenges of the Family in the Context of Evangelization. The final docu-ment of this extraordinary synodal assembly, the Relatio Synodi, is the preparatory document or Lineamenta of the XIV Ordinary General Assembly, scheduled to take place in the Vatican from October 4-15, 2015, to consider the topic: The Vocation and Mission of the Family in the Church and Contemporary World. In this way, the two synodal assem-blies share the same topic of the family and become part of a single synodal process. The intervening time between synods is an opportunity to reflect on the reaction of the first synod and to make a thorough theological examination of the Church’s pastoral activity. The process of prepar-ing for the Ordinary Synod begins with a consultation in each of the world’s dioceses. Our Archdiocese of Cincinnati Pastoral Council will be discussing the Lineamenta at its next meeting on March 7. Additionally, all the faithful of the Archdiocese will have the opportunity to participate as well. On the Archdiocese of Cincinnati web page we have posted the Lineamenta and the accompanying questionnaire. Sur-veys must be completed by Sunday, March 1, 2015. The link is: http://catholiccincinnati.org/lineamenta. There is also a link to the USCCB website which provides further informa-tion and answers to frequently asked questions.

Be Christ To One Another! Our parish theme through June 2016 is “Be Christ to One Another.” Our parishioners have embodied this way of life long

before this was our theme. Many of you regularly volunteer, whether it’s in our parish or in your community. No matter how big or how small, it’s important to live our lives as close to Christ as possible. Each week in the bulletin, we will fea-ture opportunities to be Christ to one another, and we will also try to highlight those who are living this theme already.

Liturgy of the Word with Children:Leaders needed at the 11:30 a.m. Mass!

Liturgy of the Word with Children is a great way to get involved in the par-ish. The ministry provides a meaning-ful and fun experience for children in grades 1-3 during the Liturgy of the Word at the 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. Sunday Masses. Many resources are

available to help facilitators relate the Sunday readings in a way that is interesting, understandable, and that empowers them to reflect upon its message and con-nect it to their daily lives. It is not a religion class—Lit-urgy of the Word with Children is intended to help the children pray and reflect on God’s Word. We are current-ly looking for individuals and/or couples to be a part of this ministry and lead a session. You don’t need to do it every weekend, or even every other weekend. Most leaders lead a session once a month or once every other month! If you are interested in becoming a leader, feel free to sit in on a session and see how it’s done. Then call Scott Steinke 777-6433 for more info on how you can be a leader in this ministry! • All Children in Grades 1, 2, and 3 are welcome to participate.• Each session needs a facilitator and co-facilitator/aid.• Materials and training are provided. This may be the ministry at St. John for you!

Habitat for Humanity Volunteers NeededMonday, March 2, 7 p.m.

Gary Sullivan, parishioner and host of the local home improvement TV show “HomeWoRx,” will host an in-formation night on Habitat for Hu-manity. The meeting will be held in Favret Hall on Monday, March 2 from 7-8 p.m. If you are interested in learning about this great cause

and the many options available for supporting it, we would love to have you join us. If you have any ques-tions or would like to sign up, contact Jerry Barney at 777-6433, x121, or [email protected]

Thank You From Reach Out LakotaAs the year 2015 begins, I would like to take a moment to reflect on the powerful uplifting year that has gone by. We are extremely thankful that St. John Church has worked alongside us to help hundreds of families in our community through our Back to School and Christmas Programs. Your lasting partnership in these vital community outreach projects has made a real difference in the lives of countless families. More than 500 local children in need took part in our 2014 Back to School Program. Your generous contribution of new school supplies was combined with oth-ers to create personalized school supply kits for each of the participating children. The personalized kits ensured that every child had exactly what they needed to begin the school year prepared to achieve great things. Our 2014 Christmas Program distributed over 300 baskets of food. The extremely generous support of 150 families through your giving program at St. John Church was vital to the successful fulfillment of our mission. Your kindness ensured that hundreds of local families were able to prepare and enjoy a loving meal in celebration of Christmas. Thanks again for all of your support. We truly appreciate our partnership with you and look forward to more ways in which we can work together to put help and hope in the hands of those in need in our community.Sincerely,Rachel Kuntz, Christmas Program Coordinator of Reach Out Lakota
