THE SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
My Dearest Brothers and Sisters in the Good God,
I want to thank the 56 folks who donated a pint of blood
each at the semi-annual Blood Drive that we had on Wednesday,
July 11th. The number of pints was an all-time Saint John the
Evangelist Church in Centerville record and we can all be proud of
the fact that it could save a total of 168 lives. I wish to thank the
several folks who wanted to donate blood but were disqualified for
whatever reason; I commend them for their willingness to offer a
pint of blood apiece. They probably brought people with them
who could give blood. I want to thank Elaine and the other
volunteers who helped to spearhead the Blood Drive; God bless
them. Finally, I commend the staff of the New York Blood Center
for helping to make this Blood Drive so successful.
The minutes from the Parish Council meeting that was
conducted on Monday, July 9th, will be available to you soon. I
wish to highlight that toward the end of the meeting, the President
of the Parish Council, Pat Fitzsimmons, announced that this was
his last Parish Council meeting serving as President. I am deeply
grateful to Pat for serving the last ten years in that capacity; I
learned a lot from him and he always conducted a good meeting.
On Sunday, September 9th, at the 8:30 A.M. Holy Mass, I
will be honored to offer a special Holy Mass momento for all the
folks who were past members and all the folks who are present
members of the Parish Council in deep appreciation for their past
or current service to the parish.
Also, that day, at 1:00 P.M., there will be the Sixth
Annual Parishioners’ Appreciation Picnic at the grounds of the
Centerville Firehouse. The day is completely on me from my own
personal money as the least I can do to thank all of you for who
you are and what you do.
I should be up to mile 84 by the time you read my letter
to you and I want to thank you for sponsoring me; the total raised
for the parish as of Saturday, July 14th, is $4,118.
The first project for Renew and Rebuild, the parish
capital campaign, the resealing of the parking lot and driveways,
will have been continued as of this past Wednesday, July 18th.
Preliminary work on one window will have started that same day.
I want to thank all the folks who are doing these works in
progress. It will take five years to do all of the projects and we are
in the infancy stage at this point; I wish to thank you for your
patience and support.
I want to thank you for your donations for the expense of
the air conditioning in the Church; I will announce that figure this
weekend.
May God continue to bless you with a good Summer.
Sincerely, with prayers,
Father Bill Woodruff

HOSPICE- Is seeking volunteers who can give 3 hours a week of
their time to provide companionship, emotional support and
practical assistance to terminally ill patients and their families.
Volunteers visit patients at home, in area hospitals or nursing
homes. Volunteers are also needed in their Kingston office to
help with mailings, filing and special projects. No special
training required for office volunteers. FMI, call 338-5397
HOSPITAL PASTORAL CARE- If you or a family member is
admitted to a local hospital, you are under the care of a resident
priest who is available 24 hours. He administers the Sacrament of
Penance and Anointing of the Sick, and Communion is available
from a Eucharistic Minister. Please inform them of your parish
and your desire to be visited. Also have someone call your parish
priest, because the lists at the hospitals are not always clear.
OFFICE OF MORNING PRAYER AND ROSARY- Even
though there is no Holy Mass on Friday mornings, there is still
the Office of Morning Prayer, a Communion Service and the
praying of the Rosary beginning at 8:30 AM. All are invited.
MASS TIMES- When you go on vacation or travel for business
you can find information on churches and Mass times by visiting
www.masstimes.org. This website also provides a map option to
view a local street map to find the church’s location.
MISSION TO PREGNANT WOMEN IN CRISIS- Benedictine
Hospital has partnered with the Sisters of Life, a community of
religious women consecrated for the protection of all human life.
Individuals are needed to provide practical support and vital
resources to pregnant women in crisis in order to make the birth
alternative a viable option. Could you offer the following
services? Offer a nurturing home, be a friend, be a physician, be
an employer, be a college contact, be a professional counselor, be
a lawyer. Thank you for considering this work of God. For more
information, call Kim Addesso at 845-334-3003.
JOKE– Over breakfast one morning, a woman said to
her husband, “I bet you don’t know what day this is.”
“Of course I do,” he indignantly answered, going out
the door to the office. At 10 AM, the doorbell rang and
when the woman opened the door, she was handed a box
containing a dozen long stemmed red roses. At 1 PM, a foil
wrapped, two pound box of her favorite chocolates arrived.
Later, a boutique delivered a designed dress. The woman
couldn’t wait for her husband to come home. “First the flowers,
then the chocolates and then the dress!” she exclaimed. “I’ve
never had a more wonderful Groundhog Day in my life!”

MAKING ALL THINGS NEW
God our Father, through the Gospel and the Eucharist,
You bring us together as Your Church in the
Archdiocese of New York.
Send us Your Holy Spirit, to enlighten our minds and guide our
actions as we plan for the future of parish life in this Archdiocese.
Help us learn new ways to strengthen and revitalize our parish
communities, and to be good stewards of the spiritual and
material gifts that sustain them.
Bless our work, so that our parishes may continue to witness to
the truth of the Gospel, and be a sign of Your love for all people.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

PARISHIONERS’ COMMENT– Saying we love someone is
easy. Proving it with service is harder, but it really makes our
love come alive. Tithing is like that for me.
PASTOR’S COMMENT– You are a sign to me that Jesus is in
charge and is holding each of us in the palm of His hand.
