Pastor’s Desk

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As we note Benedict XVI’s final week of papal service, let us continue to pray for him and pray that the College of Cardinals will open themselves as completely as possible to the guidance of the Holy Spirit as they soon convene to choose his successor. A Mass of Thanksgiving for the ministry of Pope Benedict XVI will be offered on Sunday, March 3rd at 12 noon at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, with Archbishop Myers presiding and Fr. Larry Porter preaching. All are invited!

Thank you to those who continue to make their pledges for the 2013 Archbishop’s Annual Appeal. 152 families have now pledged $50,814.00 toward our goal of $95,687.00. We always go well over the goal as the weeks progress; the closer we get to the stretch goal of $222,318.00, the more money is returned for our parish use. Please make your pledge today either by returning the form you received in the mail to the chancery or by filling out a form in the brochures in the church and returning it to us at the rectory.

Perhaps you have noticed the many RESTRICTED PARKING SIGNS which several nearby businesses have erected to preserve parking for their own customers. To make the point, it seems that at least some of these businesses have also authorized the towing company to enforce the restriction, even when the business is closed, such as Sunday! For your own peace of mind, be sure to park only in our St. John’s and municipal parking lots. Dr. Yee will continue to permit our parking on evenings and Sundays in his lot across from the rectory.

Two wonderful opportunities to join with Catholics from all over the Archdiocese will be provided at Seton Hall in South Orange: “We Walk by Faith!” - A Catholic Men’s Conference on Saturday, March 2; and “Rediscover the Joy of Believing: the Year of Faith and the New Evangelization” - A Women’s Commission Day of Reflection on Saturday, March 9. Both are prayerful, spirit-filled, life changing experiences! Flyers with information and a registration form for both events are inserted in this week’s bulletin. We encourage your attendance. For any further information, contact Deacon Jim for the men’s day and Mary Cox for the women’s day. Msgr. Richard Arnhols, Pastor

Reflection on Today’s Gospel At the time of his transfiguration, Jesus is joined by Moses and Elijah, who represent Israel’s law and the prophets. The exodus of which they speak is Jesus’ death, resurrection, and ascension, all of the important events in God’s plan of salvation. This discussion indicated that Jesus’ death was not a tragic mistake, something that he was unable to avoid. Rather, those who represented the entire religious tradition of Israel knew it beforehand. The voice from heaven not only authenticates who Jesus is, but also instructs the disciples to listen to his words, regardless of how challenging or perplexing they might be. It will take the actual unfolding of the events of Jesus’ exodus for them to understand its meaning.

In the Gospel, God comes to Jesus. At first this is made evident in the change of Jesus’ face and clothing. Then the great prophets Moses and Elijah appear, mediators of God’s word to the people through both the Torah and prophetic deeds, who speak with Jesus about his coming death in Jerusalem. Finally, as with Israel in the desert, God manifests the divine presence, coming in a cloud and proclaiming Jesus as “chosen Son.” “Listen to him,” the voice says. Divine word is backed up by divine deed.

This yearly glimpse of glory in the story of the Transfiguration tells us yet again that God recognizes our need for signs and support in our journey of faith. Walking in faith is not all shadows and darkness. Light comes in to our lives, sometimes in such unexpected ways that we only become aware of it in retrospect. These moments whisper of God’s ongoing presence with us, of promises yet to be fulfilled.

“Lord, enlighten the eyes of our hearts, providing a glimpse of the glory promised us because of your saving death and resurrection. As we move toward renewing the promises made at baptism, make our hearts ever more confident in the Father’s fidelity and the ongoing strength that comes from the Spirit. Amen.”

Transfiguration Academy We Did It Again!

Top Ten finish at Prestigious Future City Engineering Competition For the third consecutive year and the fifth time in seven years, Transfiguration Academy placed in the Top 10 in the National Engineers Week “Future City” Competition. The annual National Engineers Week Foundation’s Future City Competition, for sixth, seventh and eighth grade students, is held from September, 2012 through February, 2013. The Future City competition is a program of National Engineers Week Foundation (NEWF), a consortium of professional and technical societies and major U. S. corporations. Each year, over 240 students, from both parochial and public schools, enter over 150 future cities for judging. From this approximately 80 teams make it to the NJ Regional finals. The teams are judged on four separate projects over a 5 month period : their research essays, computer designed simulated city, the actual working model of the city, oral presentations and Q & A session given to and judged by engineers from the American Society of Civil Engineers and private engineering firms. Congratulations to the team of: Roshen John, Angelo Cadiente and Warren Isley, and their entry “Hydrocity”. A special thanks to their teacher/advisor, Mrs. Betsy Walker. Mrs. Walker has given unselfishly of her time both over the summer preparing for the competition and doing all that messy paper work. During the school year she works with the students by giving up her prep periods and volunteering after school to work with the students.
