Peer Support 2017 - Living Positively/Optimism

Program Outline:

Week 10 - A Positive Way In this week’s final session of Living Positively the children will reflect on what they learned in Peer Support. They will remember to think optimistically, persevere and use positive self talk. The children will learn about a model - I laugh, I live, I love. This will help them to remember the activities they enjoy, their strengths and to show appreciation to others. Discuss with your child ways they can live positively.

Premier's Debating Challenge - Round 3

On Wednesday, 21st June, 2017, St Johns Park Public School’s Platinum and Gold Teams competed in Round 3 of the Premier’s Debating Competition. Their opponents were Cabramatta West Public School’s "The Avengers" and "The League".

Platinum Team We versed Cabramatta West “The League”. The topic was ‘That parents should provide pets for their kids’. We were the negative team and our points were about cost, responsibility, distraction and freedom. Unfortunately, we lost due to lack of rebuttal. Even though we were quite disorganised throughout, we managed to have a great debate. We would like to congratulate the opposing team and thank them for an invigorating debate.

“Next time we will be more prepared.” – Royce “Sob! Sob! Sob! They deserved it.” – James

Written by the Platinum Team (Nicholas, Royce, Thomas and James)

Gold Team We versed Cabramatta West “The Avengers”. The topic was ‘That parents should make kids in Year 5 and 6 do 30 minutes of chores each day’. We were the affirmative team and our arguments were about using time productively, demonstrating independence and responsibility, contributing to the family, and preparing kids for the future. We won the debate!

“I’d like to thank my teammates for making this victory happen.” – Jacinta “I couldn’t believe that we won. It was such a relief!” – Kirsten

Written by the Gold Team (Kirsten, Jacinta, Daniel and Grace)

The adjudicator gave both teams extensive feedback after the debate. Overall, both teams needed to provide more thorough rebuttals and ensure that the summary from the third speaker was more detailed. In Round 4 of the Premier’s Debating Competition, our Platinum Team will be up against Mount Pritchard Public School and our Gold Team will be up against Cabramatta West Public School’s "The League".

Fairfield Debating Competition - Round 2 Team B

On 30th May 2017, Team B of the Fairfield Debating Competition had a memorable day at Villawood North Public School. We debated the topic ‘ Parents should not be responsible for their children’s crimes.’ The members of the debating team spent days of hard work preparing for the debate and when it was time to present the arguments that we had written and prepared everyone was very nervous. We walked through the school office to the hall for the debate. During the time when speakers on St Johns Park’s team and the speaker on Villawood North’s team were presenting their speech we were writing some rebuttals to rebut the other team’s ideas. It was a very challenging round and we all encouraged each other to try our best and we ended up winning! We were very proud of ourselves and on the way back to school on the school bus everyone was very enthusiastic. We were very happy for the rest of the day. We weren’t happy just because we won the round, it was because we put a lot of effort into the work which even meant that some of us had to stay up late. We were very proud that we had won that round.
