Encountering the Divine In the Gospel today we hear the story of the Transfiguration of Jesus. The char-acters from Scripture who appear are Moses and Elijah. Of course, they repre-sent the fulfillment of Law and the Prophets. But they also had experiences of the Divine themselves. Moses goes up the mountain of God and there experi-ences a bush on fire that is not consumed. There he receives a call to go to Pharaoh and lead God’s people out of Egypt. Elijah goes into the wilderness and walks forty days and forty nights until he comes to the mountain of God at Horeb, where Moses had also been. There he receives a call and a mission to anoint two kings and a prophet to succeed him. Jesus also goes to a high mountain along with His apostles and He is also on a mission. His mission is to suffer, die, and rise. Here, Jesus is transfigured, and His Divine identity is re-vealed. In all of these events, each has an encounter with the Divine. During this holy season of Lent, it could be helpful for all of us, at some point during these forty days, to “go up the mountain.” To find some time for prayer and re-treat. To go wherever we need to go or do whatever we need to do in order to go to meet God. And when we do, we ought to rest in that and give thanks for the moment. Then we’d each have a fulfilling Lent. Peace, Fr. Jason Johnston

“Bear your share of the hardship for the Gospel,” St.
Paul tells Timothy in today’s second reading. What

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil;
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; And do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host,
by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan
and all evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls
