Diocese of Joliet Office of the Bishop Catholic Home Missions Appeal

Strengthening the Church at Home

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The struggle to receive basic pastoral care and cate-chesis is faced by thousands of faithful living in home mission dioceses. The Catholic Home Mis-sions Appeal helps ease that struggle through grants that support priestly and religious vocations, faith formation, and education for leaders to attend to the unique needs of their faith communities. For example, last year the Appeal enabled the home mission diocese of Biloxi, Mississippi, to support 100% of the expenses of educating 12 seminarians. These future priests will be invaluable, as 11 priests are currently retired, and several more are eligible for retirement in the next few years. A unique as-pect of seminarian education in Biloxi is training as a sign language practitioner. One-quarter of the hearing-impaired individuals in the Biloxi region are Catholic. With the help of the Catholic Home Missions Appeal, these and other programs ensure that parishioners here at home can worship well in vibrant faith communities. A mission diocese must often contend with high rates of poverty and a lack of educated pastoral and lay leadership. With your support, the Catholic Home Missions Appeal can continue to provide es-sential pastoral outreach in home mission dioceses. Please be generous in the Catholic Home Missions Appeal and help strengthen the Church at home. Your support will truly make a difference. Thank you. God bless you.

Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon Bishop of Joliet For more information on the Catholic Home Missions and the dioceses and eparchies funded by the Catholic Home Missions Appeal, please visit www.usccb.org/nationalcollections.

THE 2012 CATHOLIC MINISTRIES ANNUAL APPEAL IS UNDERWAY

“THE KINGDOM OF GOD IS AT HAND” (MARK 1:15) This year, the theme of the Appeal is “The Kingdom of God is at Hand.” We are challenged as Catholics to build up God’s kingdom here on earth. Your contribution to the CMAA enables the diocese to uphold the Gospel message and build up the kingdom of God throughout the seven-county area of the Joliet Diocese. Please remember that God never forgets us. Even when we believe that our successes are self- made, it is the blessings that God has given to each of us that have helped us to get where we are. He is always giving to us. His grace is always there for us. One way that we can show our gratitude is by offering our generous financial support to our parish and to our diocese. The gifts that we give enable ministries and services that touch thou-sands of lives. Please answer Bishop Conlon’s request and make a generous pledge. All pledges can be paid in ten monthly installments. Thank you in advance for your support.

Catholic Schools Week...Last week Holy Family celebrated Catholic Schools Week. This year's theme was “Catholic Schools: Faith, Academics, Service.” This theme focused on the three priorities that Catholic schools establish that make us stand out from other educational institutions. Children are taught faith- not just the ba-sics of our faith, but how to have a relationship with God. Children have academics which, in Catholic schools, are held to very high standards. Children appreciate the need for service; the giving of one’s time, tal-ent, and treasure to help others. This is what Jesus did, and it is what we strive to do. As students and staff of Holy Family Catholic School, we are grateful for the support and sacrifice of our families and parishes which allow us the opportunity to learn in such an environment. Upcoming events... If you have a child who has a cell phone or uses the Internet, mark your calendars for Wednesday, February 8th from 6:30-9:00pm in the school gym. Detective Richard Wistocki, a US Secret Service Internet Crimes Investigator, will give a presentation on practical ways for parents to monitor their child's safety online. He shares real stories and real statistics such as "50% of teens communicate online with someone they have never met." Come and learn ways to keep your children safe online! Upcoming events...Please join us at Buffalo Wild Wings in Elmhurst on Wednesday, February 15th for a fun night out with school families, school staff, and parishioners. Holy Family will receive 20% of all food pur-chases that evening. Upcoming events...Our annual auction and dinner dance will be held on March 3, 2012 at Alta Villa in Addi-son. This is open to all parishioners, school parents, families, and friends. Come join us for an evening of food, fellowship, and fun!

This will be the last week for our "Spotlight on Families" segment. We hope you enjoyed getting to know some of our school families!

SPOTLIGHT ON FAMILIES - MEET THE FALCO FAMILY!

An interview with Nick and Monica Falco Tell some general things about your family. We are a family of four: Nick (41), Monica (37), Nicholas (8 yrs old), and Cristian (3 years old). Nicholas is in 3rd grade and Cristian will be attending Preschool next year. Our boys both love the outdoors especially riding their bikes, playing basketball and anything having to do with water. We as a family enjoy spending a lot of time together, may it be here at home or with friends and family.

Why is Catholic education important to you? Catholic education is important to us because it’s nice to know the history of our Catholic faith and why we follow the lessons of Jesus through the church and the school.

Why did you choose Holy Family Catholic School? Aside from our history with St. Charles Borromeo, we feel that with all the efforts put forth to making HFCS what it is today, this led us to believe that it was going to do well and thrive for the best of our children. What do you like best about HFCS? That’s a tough one, because we like a lot of things but we would have to say that the best thing is the feeling of unity amongst the staff and families and knowing our son is in great hands. How do you encourage your children to have a faith-filled life? We encourage our children to have a faith-filled life by going to church on Sundays and special holidays. We also remind them to pray when they feel the need for some extra support. What things/how are you involved in HFCS/your child's education? We as parents try to stay very in-volved in our son’s education by volunteering and being active in the Parent’s Club. I was the Parent’s Club treasurer 2 years ago and now am the Vice President. I enjoy staying up to date on what is going on at his school. Did you have a Catholic upbringing? How did this affect your decision to send your child to a Catholic school? Both my husband and I had Catholic upbringing. I went to St. Jerome School in Chicago for 4 years. My husband Nick, along with his brothers and sister, are SCB alumni. We knew early in our relationship that we wanted our children to have the same values and upbringing as we did. We have a lot of history with this parish and are so glad that the school is still here and thriving more then ever.

Time, Talent & Treasure “Fostering Stewardship as a way of life”

In gratitude of God’s gifts of time and talent to us, we gratefully acknowledge and salute:

Deacon Phil Marrow Who have donated countless hours of hard work, cleaning our sidewalks from the snow and all his dedication and devotion to

the parish. Stewardship Thought for the Week

By our Baptism we all join Christ in the roles of priest, prophet and king. The prophetic role can be particularly challenging, Stewardship opportunities present themselves to us in sharing the gospel message in word or example. This is a fundamental requirement of our baptismal calling; we must undertake it, even when it is inconvenient or tedious.

286 Adult Envelopes $5,198 + Loose Cash $3,103

+ Children’s $192.65 = Total Sunday $ 8,493.65

Our Goal each Week to cover our expenses is $11,500.

Thank you for your kind generosity and your deep love of Saint Joseph.

Nuestra Meta por Semana para cubrir los gastos es de: $11,500. Gracias por su Generosidad
