January 19. Several par ishioners will be hosting dinner in their homes on Sunday, January 28, at 5:00. Your host will provide the main dish and drinks and the guests will bring a salad or vegetable to complete the meal. address they will be provided! Child care and a meal will be provided at the school for those in need. Following dinner, everyone will meet at the Church Hall by 7:00 for dessert, to reunite with your children, and to meet everyone else who has participated. Last year was a lot of fun! Please contact Sharron Konzen at 319-350-9861 or [email protected]. Be sure to advise if you need child care, and provide any food al-lergy information for yourselves and/or your children.

St. Joseph Fun Days
Faith - Family - Community
June 1, 2, & 3, 2018
The return of Fun Days brings some changes. One of the large projects was a need to upgrade the parish grounds
electrical service and lighting to adequately meet the needs of an event the size of Fun Days. Local contractors and
Parishioners: Mark Barndt, Jerry Fetzer, Jamie McAllister, Joe Kruser, Alex Kruser, Scott Schlegel, Matt Schlegel, Terry
Sullivan, and Phil Recker donated their time and skill to the project. The upgrade is nearly complete and will be in place not only for Fun Days, it will also allow improved use of the grounds for a wider variety of parish activities. A big thank you to each of them for their hard work on this important project.
The Weeks Ahead….
A Fun Days Newsletter will be mailed by the end of January to each parishioner and family within the parish. This
newsletter will include important information about Fun Days, the activities, volunteering and our committee heads for each aspect of Fun Days.
For more information contact Jerry, Rick, Linda, Joe, Karri and Karla at 319-774-8719 or [email protected] .

5“Come, and You Will See” - Since St. Mark’s gospel is shorter than the others and
Ordinary Time of the liturgical year spans thirty-four weeks, the Church supplements
a few weeks of this liturgical year with readings from St. John’s gospel. Such is the
case this week.
I have often found it difficult to follow the main idea of many of the gospel passages
from St. John, likely because there are many main ideas that stand on their own yet
coalesce together like circles intersecting with each other as we find with the Olympic
Games colored rings. The coalesced ideas form another idea which is probably the
main point of the passage. Factor in the symbolic language St. John uses, and one is left contemplating the passage as
one does a great work of art while a#empting to determine what the artist is saying. And, so it goes.
In today’s gospel, there is a lot of activity, like the different ideas at work. St. John the Baptist calls Jesus the Lamb of
God, pointing away from himself to the Lord. His disciples are to follow the One for whose coming he
heralded. Two of John’s disciples, Andrew among them, asked Jesus where he was staying, meaning, “Can we hang
out with you?” Jesus’ reply was, “Come, and you will see,” in other words, “Sure!” Then, Andrew looks for his
brother, Simon Peter, and invites him to see Jesus. The passage has to do with being a#racted to the Lord because of
his presence and teaching, discovering that he is the promised Messiah and inviting others to find Jesus.
Good enough, but the layers of meaning and the intersection of ideas continue. To see means more than physical
sight. It connotes understanding through experiencing the one who is the catalyst of that understanding. It is deeper
knowledge of Jesus not simply intellectually, but through an experience of him. Knowledge of Jesus comes through
the full engagement with Jesus by the person knowing him. These experiences lead to faith and love of Jesus and
commitment to him.
Whew, that’s a lot to comprehend! That’s why it is be#er to write about it rather than to preach it. The bo#om line of
this passage for me is the statement Jesus made to the two disciples, “Come, and you will see.” That’s an invitation of
engagement with Jesus which is a great way to initiate this year’s season of Ordinary Time. Stay with Jesus. Rest in
Jesus. Hang out with Jesus. Engage with Jesus. He has much to say to you about himself, your life and your daily
experiences of living life this year. “Come, and you will see!”
