Feast of the Holy Family: Jesus, Mary and Joseph

Dear Parishioners and Friends:

The parents of Jesus took him up to Jerusalem to present him

to the Lord. [Luke 2:22b]

Family is the most basic sacred institution in society and

in church. Family is called “the domestic church” and it is

where we all start from. But Family is just not a small group

composed of father, mother and children; rather it is a larger

reality of grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins, godmothers,

godfathers, and other adopted members. Here we learn to

become human beings and children of God.

This feast day is not very old. Poor St. Joseph did not

have a feast day until the 15th century, and only in the 17th

century did the whole Church observe his feast on March 19.

At that time many children lost their fathers to work outside

the home. The work of educating children fell almost com-

pletely to mothers. The Church was worried that fathers,

tired from so much work, ignored their children. So the role

of St. Joseph was elevated and the commemoration of the

Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph began to remind

every Christian father of his obligations to his children and

wife. This New Year needs the leadership of more Dads like

St. Joseph to step up and witness in caring for faith in family

life.

Festividad de la Santa Familia: Jesús, María y José

Queridos Feligreses y Amigos:

Los padres de Jesús lo llevaron a Jerusalén a presentarlo al

Señor. [Lucas 2:22b]

La familia es la más básica Sagrada institución en la

sociedad y en la iglesia. La familia es llamada “la iglesia

doméstica” y es de donde todos empezamos. Pero la familia

no es solo un pequeño grupo compuesto del papá, la mamá y

los niños; más bien es una realidad más grande de abuelos,

tíos, tías, primos, padrinos y madrinas y otros miembros

adoptados. Aquí aprendemos a ser humanos e hijos de

Dios.

Esta fiesta no es muy antigua. El pobre San José no te-

nía un día de fiesta hasta el siglo 15 y solo en el siglo17 la

Iglesia entera observo su fiesta el 19 de marzo. En ese tiem-

po muchos niños perdieron sus papas que se fueron a traba-

jar fuera de casa. El trabajo de educar a los niños cayó casi

completamente en las madres. Así que el rol de San José fue

elevado y la conmemoración de la Santa Familia de Jesús,

María y José comenzó a recordar a cada padre cristiano su

obligación para sus hijos y esposa. Este Año Nuevo necesita

del liderazgo de más papas como San José para que den

ejemplo en cuidar de la fe en la vida familiar.

Living the Eucharist is a program for the renewal of our parish that will take place in February and March. All of us will be able to take part in it in different ways. Right now we are looking for small group leaders to implement the program. Let-ters have gone out inviting parish members to step up as group leaders. Would you like to help lead a small group in February and March? Contact Montse Diaz, Jesus Velez, or Anna Saucedo. As we begin Mass each weekend, we pray for its success as we share now “a Prayer for Living the Eucharist.” (Please do not let children destroy the new prayer cards that are placed in your missals!)
