MASS INTENTIONS FOR THE WEEK

Peace and good! As we celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday, we pause to reflect upon God’s gift of mercy. What exactly is mercy? The Catholic Encyclopedia offers this definition:

Mercy, compassionate sorrow at another's misfortune together with a will to alleviate it; it is genuine love in relation to an unhappy being. The encounter of love and misery gives birth to mercy, which is therefore one of the essential forms of charity, situated in the very heart of Christianity (cf. St. Thomas Aquinas).

As we read in the Gospel of Matthew, "Blessed are the merci-ful, for they shall obtain mercy" (Mt. 5:7). Bishop Morneau shares the following insights on the virtue of mercy:

Jesus is the merciful love of the Father. When he ap-pears to the frightened disciples locked behind closed doors, his greeting is one of peace. Jesus "felt" their misery and his forgiving word alleviated their fear and shame. Even more, he immediately empowered them through the gift of the Holy Spirit to become agents of mercy and peace to others. These "unhappy beings" could now rejoice and throw open the doors of freedom.

Mercy seeks expression. Within our rich Catholic tradi-tion, we have a listing of the corporal and spiritual works of mercy that invite us to be specific in our ad-dressing the misery of the human condition. To live the corporal works of mercy - feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, clothing the naked, sheltering the homeless, visiting the sick, ransoming the captive, and burying the dead - is to walk in the way of our merciful God. To live the spiritual works of mercy - instructing the ignorant, counseling the doubtful, admonishing the sinner, bearing wrongs patiently, forgiving offenses, comforting the afflicted, and praying for the living and the dead - is to be a disciple of the Lord.

The early Christian community, as recorded in the Acts, pooled their resources and then addressed the needs of all. There was here a sense of the common good that challenges our contemporary individualism. The source of this sharing was rooted in the person of Jesus, in the grace of love, and in the virtue of mercy.

As we read in the First Letter to Peter: "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who in his great mercy gave us a new birth to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead . . ." (1 Pt. 1:3). Indeed, "may his mercy endure forever." Blessed Divine Mercy Sunday!

We invite you to join us for the celebration of the Sacrament of Anointing, Chaplet of Divine Mercy and Prayer as we cele-brate Divine Mercy Sunday, Today, April 28, 2019 at 2:00 pm in the Church.

PAC Meeting Notes April 11, 2019 7:00 pm

New agenda items: The parish staff is tentatively planning to conduct a parish cen-sus this summer/fall to validate the list of registered parishion-ers. Susie Guerin asked why the 12:15 pm Mass was eliminated. Fr. Tom explained that it was mostly attended by people who also attended other Masses and since offering the 12:15 pm Mass, several neighboring parishes now have a 12:00 or 12:15 pm Mass throughout the year. Fr. Tom asked the Council to think about ideas for a future Advent or Lenten Retreat. Denise Rutledge talked about the SJS Spring Fling, which was a huge success and has raised $115,000 so far. Ryanne Brenner did a fantastic job with the auction. Mary Sears did a wonderful job with the SJS Art Show, which included 515 pieces of art. Continuing agenda items: Lent and Holy Week – Preparations are nearly done. The Holy Thursday Mass will be bilingual. The Fish Fry is set for April 12th. The Ladies Society will be assisting Laura Stump with cooking and Cub Scouts will be helping with clean up and ticket sales. Stations of the Cross will be at 7:00 pm led by the friars from Washington, DC. BLA Update – We have received pledges for 89% of our goal with 16% participation of our registered parishioners. Fr. Tom would like at least 25% of parishioners to participate. Fr. Tom thanked the PAC members for delivering the BLA talks during Mass and Tom Reilly for writing such a good plea for support of the BLA. Brother David’s Ordination – The bus to Loretto was cancelled due to insufficient riders. Parishioners will car pool to Loretto instead. Father David will celebrate his first Mass at 10:00 am on May 5th at St. Joseph. There will be a reception for him af-terwards. In September, we hope to have two Franciscan tran-sitional deacons assigned to the parish. New Parishioner lists were passed out. The PAC received three emails: One about regarding a 7:00 pm Mass on Saturdays; one about the cost of the Baptismal Font and renovations; and one about Joseph, the homeless man, who frequently sits outside the church. The first two were answered. Father Tom and Father Vince will answer the third.
