An open letter to Catholic School Students: Do you know why you are going to a Catholic school?

Permit me to give you a little bit of background. Your parents and grandparents are the ones who built the Catholic school educational system in your city, state, and nation. Your parents and grandparents saw the im-portance of a great education and saw the connection be-tween their faith in God and his Church and education to assist the greater community in becoming more than just

an average citizen of society and believer in Christ. A Catholic school education is now more expensive than it used to be. In previous decades, religious sisters and brothers who worked for next to nothing staffed our

Catholic schools. They spent long hours to make sure the teachings of the Church and the education of the next generation was excellent. Now our teachers are mostly laywomen and men. And they deserve a living wage and

to provide for their own families. As Catholic Schools Week 2018 approaches, let us re-member where our Catholic schools were, and where

they are going.

Let us pray...

God of knowledge and faith, thank you for the opportunity to go to a Catholic

school. When I go to Mass, I hear that knowledge is so im-

portant. Thank you for my parents and grandparents

who have built our school and supported it through-out the years.

Help me to be a good student and to become a good supporter of my parish, city,

and country. Please bless all those men and women

who have spent their lives teaching in our Catholic schools.

Please bless my friends and teachers I learn with every day.

BRADY’S CORNER

Jan. 22 marked the 45th sad anniversary of the Roe v. Wade court decision which legalized abor-tion. Since then, over 59 million babies have been aborted in the United States. The 59 white roses on the altar last week were a memorial to these pre-cious children of God who were not allowed to be born. Please keep mothers, fathers and the unborn in your prayers. You could pray a Hail Mary each day for the unborn, or find a prayer for life on the internet. The important thing is to pray often. Thank you.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK

Is it a school with a parish, or is it a parish with a school? It is a question I always consider when peo-ple ask me about Catholic Schools Week, though you might look at that opening question and ask,

"What?"

It is a good question, because our parish communi-ties have a mandate from the Gospel to preach the good news. Moreover, that is exactly what a good Catholic school does. It is another one of the minis-tries of a parish: to educate well-rounded individu-als in Gospel values, preparing those young indi-

viduals to take their eventual place in the larger sec-ular community. All the educational efforts of the parish school are focused on the life of faith. That faith is formed in knowledge of the teachings of the Church and of the Gospel, and those qualities are demonstrated through a life of service to the com-

munity.

A Catholic school is a community of faith, knowledge, and service, as a ministry of the parish community; and Catholic Schools Week provides a wonderful opportunity for us to reflect on whether we have "a school with a parish, or a parish with a school," and make sure our parish school is living

its mandate from the Church.

Everyday Stewardship

When I reflect on the many years of my life, there are many people who were influential on my devel-

opment as a person, a student, and a Christian. Through their graciousness and generosity, I was able to work through challenges and difficulties, becoming stronger in the end. They pushed me to become better than I was at the time and helped me to see what I could eventually become. Without

them giving of themselves to me I am unsure where I would be today.

Because others were good stewards of the gifts and talents God gave them, I now strive to use wisely what I have been given as well. Yes, I spend much of my time on the road speaking in churches about stewardship and I write books and articles about

this way of life, but my real desire is to impact the most those around me. I want my children to see

how I am growing in this life and be an example to them. I want me and my wife to grow in generosity together. My hope is that my friends see a light in me and inquire about how and why it is there.

Above all, I want to live with a graciousness and hospitality that others find welcoming.

I believe that through our kindness and grace-filled existence God can touch others, heal others, and embrace others. We are the hands and feet of

Christ. May we, today and every day we hear his voice, harden not our hearts.

GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE

DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE

January 28, 2018 4th Sunday in Ordinary Time

"The people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes." Those gathered in the synagogue where Jesus taught had never heard anything like this be-fore. They were used to the preaching of the well-educated scribes, but Jesus possessed something

that those men lacked: authority. Instead of merely interpreting the laws of the prophets, Jesus present-ed a new vision, indeed, he shared the good news of

the Gospel with his listeners. We do not have the opportunity to stand in the pres-

ence of Jesus in the same way that those first-century Jews did, but nonetheless we can also stand in awe of his authority. His teachings are available to us through the sacred Scriptures that the Church has preserved and through the sacred tradition that

the Church carries on. And in a special way, Christ's authority continues to inspire and guide us through the ministries of the papacy, episcopacy, and priesthood that Jesus established on our behalf

while he was yet on earth. As Catholics, we have a special share in the aston-ishing authority of Jesus through the hierarchy of the Church. Although this structure is often misun-derstood or misinterpreted, it is actually an authori-ty rooted in service and modeled after Christ who told his apostles, "The greatest among you must be

your servant" (Mt 23:11). This humble exercise of authority is contrary to the worldly search for power. And whenever we find ourselves in a position of authority, we too should strive to lead and direct others in the true spirit of Christian love and service. Chances are, if we truly imitate Christ in this way, people will be astonished

at what they see.
