PRAYING FOR PEACE AND REPARATION

We invite you to stay at the end of Sunday Mass following

the closing hymn and join us in praying three “Hail

Mary’s” for Peace: in our World, in our Families and in our

Hearts. We also pray the Prayer to St. Michael the

Archangel, for healing and reparation in our Church.

SACRAMENTS

Baptism The Sacrament of Baptism is celebrated on

Sundays at 12:30 PM. A PreBaptism class is required for

both parents prior to the Baptism of their first child.

Register with the Parish Office: 203.775.1035.

Marriage Weddings generally are celebrated on Friday

evening or Saturday afternoons and must be scheduled at

least six months in advance. Please do not make final

arrangements for your reception prior to contacting the

Parish Office.

R.C.I.A. Interested in becoming a Catholic? Call the

Parish Office.

“GLUTENFREE” HOSTS

St. Joseph Church has a limited supply of lowgluten

communion hosts available for those with a gluten allergy

(not dietary preference). While often referred to as “gluten

free,” the hosts actually contain 0.01% gluten in order to

conform to liturgical standards. Please advise a priest or

deacon before Mass if you wish to receive the lowgluten

host.

IMPORTANT HOSPITAL INFORMATION

Parishioners entering Danbury Hospital as patients are

urged to contact the St. Joseph Parish Office (203)775

1035 if they wish to be visited by a member of St. Joseph’s

clergy during their stay. Hospital chaplains will continue to

visit patients who identify themselves as Catholic when be-

ing admitted.

The Holy Family

December 29, 2019

“’Rise, take the child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay

there until I tell you.’” 725 kilometers. That’s the distance

on modern roads from Bethlehem to Cairo. Assuming one

covered 40km a day on foot ambitious for two young

parents and their infant son the journey would take well

over two weeks. Of course, the Holy Family didn’t have

modern roads. They would travel through wilderness, fear

bandits, run low on water, and cross the vast Sinai

Peninsula in a reverse of their forefathers in Exodus. Here,

in struggle and sacrifice, are the beginnings of the forging of

the Holy Family.

“Joseph rose and took the child and His mother by night

and departed for Egypt. He stayed there until the death of

Herod.” Large Jewish communities existed in most major

cities of the ancient Mediterranean world, after the collapse

of their kingdoms chronicled in the Old Testament, and

Joseph could likely find work as a carpenter. All the same,

today’s Gospel reminds us that the first formational years of

Jesus as a babeinarms were spent in a strange land. The

members of the Holy Family were foreigners, outsiders,

immigrants.

The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. God took on

our humanity. He is in solidarity with our own trials and

difficulties. On the feast of the Holy Family, we honor the

special place of the family within society. We are invited,

too, to recall those families who share in the struggles of the

Holy Family in a particular way. We pray for immigrants,

asylum seekers, and refugees. We pray for all parents who

sacrifice their own wellbeing and comfort so their children

may have a better life.

FEAST OF THE HOLY

FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY,

AND JOSEPH

A change in plans

Dreamers can’t explain them-

selves. People ask: “How could

you? Why did you?” And dreamers shrug and smile. They make the

sacrifice, they take the risk, they think differently, they become some-

one unimaginable. Ask any artist or composer, star athlete or entre-

preneur, priest or monk or missionary: How did you become what

you are? They shrug and smile, because it’s hard to tell someone who

hasn’t heard the voice themselves: I talk to angels, I listen to the uni-

verse, I close my eyes so I can see more clearly. Sit and pay attention

to the holy silence.

TODAY’S READINGS: Sirach 3:26, 1214; Colossians 3:1221 or

3:1217; Matthew 2:1315, 1923 (17). “Rise, take the child and His

mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you.”

TH

DAY WITHIN THE OCTAVE OF THE NATIVITY

Generation to generation

The gospel anticipates the New Year with a child’s potential. After

Simeon’s harsh prediction of a sword piercing Mary’s soul, Anna

comforts. She directs the conversation back to thanking God. She has

had time to prepare for her moment, so when it comes, she rises to

the occasion. Pope Francis linked Anna and Simeon to grandparents.

In a society that too often dismisses the elderly, grandparents still

offer time and presence, just what children need most. Pray for and

honor the elders in your own family and community. They carry a

consoling message!

TODAY’S READINGS: 1 John 2:1217; Luke 2:3640 (203). “The

child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom.”

SYLVESTER I, POPE; 7

TH

DAY WITHIN THE OCTAVE OF

THE NATIVITY

Guard the pearl of great price

We know little of Sylvester I other than that his papacy lasted from

314 until his death in 335. A legend arose around the eighth century,

however, based on a forged document known as the Donation of Con-

stantine, that the emperor who famously converted to Christianity

also transferred authority over Rome and the entire Western Roman

Empire to Sylvester and future popes. While the document was later

proven to be a fake, the papacy nonetheless got ensnared in power

politics, luxury, and the corruption that comes with trying to rule an

empire. As Dante put it in his Divine Comedy, “Ah Constantine, how

much evil was born / not from your conversion, but from that dona-

tion / that the first wealthy pope received from you!” Don’t practice

your faith for worldly gainGod grants us riches money can’t buy.

TODAY’S READINGS: 1 John 2:1821; John 1:118 (204). “He was

in the world . . . but the world did not know Him.”

OCTAVE DAY OF THE NATIVITY; SOLEMNITY OF THE

BLESSED VIRGIN MARY, THE MOTHER OF GOD

Incarnation in all

The Octave of Christmas reminds us that all people everywhere share

in the mystery of Incarnation, the communion of divinity and human-

ity, revealed in Jesus Christ and realized in all who are likewise born

of women. We celebrate this mystery whenever we gather to eat and

drink the sacred meal. Our task is to recognize the divine presence in

the least of those with whom we share this mystical communion, from

the baby born in Bethlehem to the migrant standing at our wall. Re-

solve this New Year to lend a helping hand.

WEDNESDAY’S READINGS: Numbers 6:2227; Galatians 4:47;

Luke 2:1621 (18). “So they went in haste and found Mary and Jo-

seph, and the infant lying in the manger.”

Thursday, Jan 02, 2020

BASIL THE GREAT AND GREGORY NAZIANZEN, BISH-

OPS, DOCTORS OF THE CHURCH

Let’s be friends

“To the Ancients, friendship seemed the happiest and most fully hu-

man of all loves; the crown of life and the school of virtue. The modern

world, in comparison, ignores it.” When C.S. Lewis referred to the

“Ancients” he might have had today’s saints, Basil and Gregory Nazi-

anzen, in mind. Instrumental in the formation of the Nicene Creed

that the Church recites each Sunday, these great bishops and doctors

of the church can also be remembered simply for being two great and

lasting friends. Let them remind us that deep and warm friendships

enrich life in ways that accomplishments and honorifics, and even

creeds, sublime as they may be, cannot replace.

TODAY’S READINGS: 1 John 2:2228; John 1:1928 (205). “All who

heard it were amazed by what had been told them by the shepherds.”

THE MOST HOLY NAME OF JESUS

Called by name

The memorial of the Most Holy Name of Jesus reminds us of the pow-

er of names. We honor not just the person Jesus, but the name of Je-

sus. There is a certain intimacy in knowing a person’s name. Think of

our litanies, our prayers for people who are sick or who have died.

Think of the genealogy we heard on Christmas Eve. When we name

people, we acknowledge and see them. Think of the people you see

regularly in your school, workplace, gym, grocery store, faith commu-

nity. Remember to call them by name.

TODAY’S READINGS: 1 John 2:293:6; John 1:2934 (206). “John

the Baptist saw Jesus coming toward him and said, ‘Behold, the Lamb

of God.’ “

ELIZABETH ANN SETON, RELIGIOUS

Be a trailblazer

Elizabeth Ann Seton (17741821) was born into a wealthy Episcopali-

an family. At 19, she married William Magee Seton with whom she

had five children. For a brief time, it was a wonderful life, but soon

William’s business and health failed. Elizabeth was a poor widow and

single mother by the age of 30. Inspired by Catholic friends who

helped care for her dying husband, Elizabeth became Catholic in 1805.

In the following years this first Americanborn saint established many

firsts: the first religious community of women and the first Catholic

school, with several more to follow. Elizabeth Ann Seton’s deep faith-

fulness reminds us that nothing is impossible with God.

TODAY’S READINGS: 1 John 3:710; John 1:3542 (207). “They

said to him, ‘Rabbi (which means Teacher), where do you stay?’ ‘Come

and see,’He answered.”

Question: If God is eternal and infinite, how

can He have a mother? Why don’t we call Mary

just the mother of Jesus?

Answer:

The tile of “Mary, Mother of God” can be confusing. We

aren’t implying that Mary existed from eternity or that she is

divine herself. We aren’t promoting some kind of Marian

superpowers. The Church has fought for this title throughout

the centuries for one simple reason: Christ’s identity is at

stake.

As the Church grew in the early centuries, theologians wres-

tled with what it meant for Jesus to be both God and man.

Many distortions of his identity began to emerge. One of

these was propagated by a man named Nestorius. Nestorius

and his followers denied that Jesus’ human nature and his

divine nature were inseparable. Following that logic, Mary

could have only conceived Jesus’ human nature. But people

don’t give birth to a “nature.” They give birth to a whole per-

son. For Jesus, his whole person is both human and divine.

In 431 A.D. the Council of Ephesus denounced Nestorius.

The bishops affirmed that Jesus is both fully human and fully

divine and proclaimed Mary Theotokos. Translating the

Greek to English, that means “Godbearer.” Note that this

isn’t “Godgenerator” or “Godcreator.” Mary bore Jesus,

God and man, in her womb and gave him birth. She is moth-

er to the whole person, the whole Jesus, and therefore Moth-

er of God.
