April 14th, 2019 Palm Sunday

"Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord. Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” As a kid growing up we had to carry our own palms to the church on Palm Sunday. My older brother would climb the coconut tree and cut the yellowish fresh tender palm fronds of approximately three feet in length. My sister would help me to decorate them with fresh flowers. It was amazing to see the boys of my town walking the streets with tall palms in their hands towards the downtown church. We would be standing around the temporary altar, set at the foot of the Christ the King statue, outside the church building. Out of curiosity we would compete with each other, raising the palms to check who had the tallest palm. After the blessing of the palms, all of us would follow the celebrant (priest) to the church. It was an awesome scene to see our hundred palms going in procession into the church. The Church celebrates both the Palm Sunday and the Passion Sunday this weekend. The shouting of Glory “Hosanna” and the contrasting condemnation “Crucify him,” on the same day by the same lips, gives us cause to ponder. The royal welcome and the following unjust trial of Jesus as a criminal depict the unpredictable nature of Mankind. With Palm Sunday we enter into the Holy Week and partake in the suffering, death and Resurrection of our Saviour. In this solemn week, we remember and relive the events of Christ’s journey to Calvary which brought our redemption and Salvation. During this Holy Week, let us contemplate if we are truly ready to surrender our lives to Him in every aspect, as our Lord and Saviour did for us. As we sing ‘Hosanna” and take the palm branches to our homes, let us remind ourselves that He is the king of our families.

The Greek word “hosiana” originally meant “save us now.” Christ is our true eternal King who saves us now and forever. Praise be His name always. Have a blessed Holy Week. -Fr. RCIA - The Scrutinies

For the Elect and the entire parish community, Lent is a

time of intense preparation and interior reflection. We

strive for a more intimate knowledge of Christ, our

Savior. The Scrutinies, celebrated the 3rd, 4th and 5th

Sundays of Lent, are rites of self-searching and

repentance. The Prayers of the Faithful at these

Masses inspire in us a desire to be purified and

transformed. Please support our Elect, Devin Gibney,

with your prayers.

BETHLEHEM Handcrafts

After the weekend Masses on April 27/28 Bethlehem

Handcrafts will be displaying products that are

handcrafted from Olivewood grown in the Bethlehem and

Jerusalem Area. They are crafted by Christian family

artists from the clippings and cuttings of olive tree. The

trees are pruned annually and the wood is then prepared

for use. The olive tree is significant as it is considered to be

(Holy Tree) and Jesus prayed under this tree in the garden

of Gethsemane following the last Supper. To care for this

item, use a clean soft cloth. With blessings from the land

of the Bible. Congratulations on purchasing this very

special item that can be cherished for a life time and can

be passed down for generations.

The St. Bernard’s choir needs singers for Easter! Please call (707) 572-9523 or 442-1695 or show up at the above times. Thank you!
