FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER April 24, 2016 JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY Jubilee Day for Youth This Sunday’s “Youth Jubilee” previews July’s World Youth Day in Krakow. Its theme from Matthew 5:7, “Blessed are the merciful,” echoes Pope Francis’ warning that “the practice of mercy is waning in the wider culture.” In countercultural witness, therefore, “the time has come,” says Francis, “for the Church to take up the joyful call to mercy once more. It is time to return to the basics and to bear the weaknesses and struggles of our brothers and sisters.” Jesus affirms the same in today’s Gospel. “As I have loved you, so you also should love one another” (John 13:34). Francis concludes, “The Church’s very credibility is seen in how she shows merciful and compassionate love.” Jesus too asserts, “This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:35). Thus mercy “makes young” the Church, the world, and everyone. “Mercy is the force that reawakens us to new life and instills in us the courage to look to the future with hope” (Misericordiae Vultus, 10). —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. PASTOR’S CORNER What’s love got to do with it? EVERYTHING! If we are striving to follow the Risen Christ we receive an important message in today’s Gospel passage. “This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” It takes us a lifetime of experience and perseverance to understand the kind of love that Christ the Teacher and Servant teaches to his disciples. It is an awesome challenge and wonderful opportunity. Our faith community helps us to see and put the genuine love of Christ into action in tangible ways. May the Easter Season be a time of strengthening, enriching and witnessing our discipleship by following the Good Shepherd and praying more intensely to be filled with graces that help us to love one another.

CARILLON MEMORIAL

May 1 Mary O’Connor

SYMPATHY We extend our sympathy to the family and friends of J.P. Holtz, husband of Mary, who recently passed away. May our risen Lord bless them with His healing presence.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The French Revolution swept the church in France away in an astonishing way, stripping the nation of every possible vestige of the faith, not merely shuttering churches, but using them as staging areas for pagan raves and romps. While millions of faithful simply went underground and hung on for the ride, even the seven-day week was demolished along with the names of the months. What emerged from the chaos was the Napoleonic Code of 1792 governing church life, and therefore marriage law in France, French Canada, and elsewhere. The code makes civil marriage mandatory for all citizens. In practice, when the faithful marry, they go first to the City Hall. There, the mayor performs the civil marriage, usually accompanied by a patriotic speech about the duties of the citizen, particularly in the rearing of children. Then, typically after a lunch, everyone goes off to change into more festive attire for the wedding liturgy, featuring consent, the exchange of rings, and the nuptial blessing. Sadly, only a minority of citizens today celebrate even the civil form of the rite, and a fraction of those continue on to the church. For those who do celebrate the liturgy of marriage, however, there is near certainty that the spouses are active worshipers, and that they will later present their children for baptism.

EAGLE OF THE CROSS Congratulations to Becca Rowe the latest St. Joseph parishioner to receive the Eagle of the Cross at a special banquet on Thursday, April 14. Created by the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry and introduced to the Diocese of Youngstown in 1999, this award is given each year to a group of extraordinary high school juniors and seniors who model Catholic values. The teens honored from six counties of the diocese exemplify Christian discipleship (moral integrity, prayer, good works, and Christian leadership) in their school and parish communities. Nominated by Brigid Fejes, Becca is a senior at Bio-Med Science Academy in Rootstown and has served as an altar server, assists with the PSR program, and volunteers at the Ox Roast Fair and Crestwood Youth Cheerleaders. She also is President of Venture Crew (co-ed Boy Scout organization) and mentors younger kids at Lakeside Camp. Thank you Becca for your positive witness to your Catholic Christian faith and the value of youth involvement in parish, school and community.

Did You Know . . . We have had six other teens honored with the Eagle of the Cross?! Past recipients include: Wendy Trares (1999), Sarah Clapp (2000), Austin Anderson (2012), Caitlin Chartier (2013), Alex DeHoff (2014), Sean Fejes (2015). Check out the details on the Eagle of the Cross page (under News & Events tab) our parish’s website, www.stjosephmantua.com).

ENVIRONMENT ENHANCEMENTS APPRECIATED We’d like to acknowledge John McClure, CEO, Weldon Pump LLC in Oakwood Village (employer of Chuck Casalicchio), for his donation of the large tree for our environment. In addition, the talents of Char Baumbick and Marianne Berzinskas are recognized. Char crafted the new holy oil stands and Marianne painted the cross designs on them to match our candlestick and processional cross stands. These items will be used to enhance our church sanctuary for years to come. Thank you to everyone for your generosity of time, talent, and treasure.

EARTH DAY & EVERY DAY “There is a nobility in the duty to care for creation through little daily actions . . . showing care for other living beings, using public transport or car-pooling, planting trees, turning off unnecessary lights, or any number of other practices. All of these reflect a generous and worthy creativity which brings out the

best in human beings” (Laudto Si, 211). Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si calls us to protect the Earth, our common home.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO HELP? Individuals and families are encouraged to care for our little corner of the Earth by picking up trash on our grounds. Bring your willing hands, gloves, and garbage bags to help spruce up St. Joseph Church property whenever convenient. Be sure to recycle if possible. Mother Earth and St. Joe’s appreciates the effort!
