PASTOR’S CORNER This weekend’s readings call to our attention the fact that preaching the Gospel may cause us to be frustrated at times. But our principle figures, Job, Paul and Jesus persevere in spite of challenges and sometimes the bad advice of friends. Who of us would rise early in the morning to pray or leave the acclamations of those who were grateful or admiring of us? Paul and Jesus have a very similar theme of “preaching the Gospel”! For us today, what is the Gospel? Does it call us to live an honest life, to be concerned about justice in our society, to sometimes bare rejection and scorn because of our Catholic beliefs? We have the love of Christ and the fellowship of many saints before us to lift us up from some of life’s low points. Let us work together for the coming of the kingdom and share Jesus’ love and strength with one another.

Peace, Fr. Mike Garvey

Feb. 15 Einar Kropp’s 100th Birthday

SYMPATHY We extend our sympathy to the family and friends of Donald Harvey, father of Amy Alderman (former SJS teacher), who recently passed away. May they know forever the joy of God’s presence.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION “Last rites” is a persistent but pesky phrase in the Catholic lexicon, and not a particularly useful phrase since it props open the door to misunderstanding. Many Catholics presume it refers to the anointing of the sick, yet there is nothing “last” about it. Clearly, the Church desires anointing to be celebrated fairly early on in the crisis of illness, and not as a last measure. The Rites for the Dying stand apart in the Church’s plan, and include two principal rites. The first is viaticum, Latin for “food for the journey,” the reception of Holy Communion by a dying person. Even very active and aware Catholics often do not realize that this “last rite” does not require a priest’s presence, but can be conducted by a deacon or minister of Holy Communion. The second “last rite” in the pastoral plan is a prayer called “Commendation of the Dying.” Similarly, this does not require the presence of a priest, but can be led by any minister or family member. Too often, we have focused on what only a priest can do, namely anoint, and have forgotten the fullness of liturgical care that the Church desires for its dying faithful. The “last rites” are completely available to us even when a priest is not.

BURNING OF PALMS On Sunday February 8, PSR will be burning palms in preparation for Ash Wednesday. Please bring your old palms to the Narthex. You are welcome to attend this ritual.

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of our Lenten journey towards Easter and eternal life. Now truly is our time to be healed and reconciled to God and to one another. The mark of ashes on our foreheads reminds us of our sinfulness and our turning back to God for forgiveness, healing and mercy. The ashes are made by the burning of palms from last year's Palm Sunday -- palms that were waved in victory and praise. After the priest sprinkles the ashes with holy water and incenses them, he puts them on our foreheads in the shape of a Cross to remind us of our hope, and as he does so, he says the words of Genesis 3: Remember, man, that thou art dust, and unto dust thou shalt return. We make no response to these words; we simply return to our pews. After we leave the church, we leave the ashes on our foreheads until they wear off naturally from the course of the day's activities. They are a public witness to those things our society does not wish to embrace: the reality of death, and the hope of resurrection in Our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Ash Wednesday Masses, February 18, will be at 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. You are welcome to attend either service.

APPALACHIAN EXPERIENCE Next weekend, February 14/15, the Appalachian Experience group will hold a bake sale to raise funds for this year’s trip. All bakers may drop off their baked goods in the Narthex before the Mass they attend. Thank you!

Would you like to take part in this year’s Appalachian Experience trip? A group is organizing to participate in the Housing Repair Program based at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Clintwood, VA the week of June 13-20.

High School students (as of Fall, 2015) and adults are eligible to participate. Participants must read the Rules and Expectations and sign an Agreement & Permission Form. Those 18 years of age or older are required by the Diocese of Youngstown to take Child Protection Policy Training and be fingerprinted.

A tentative commitment is required by February 23. Expenses & Fundraising It costs $275.00 per person for the fee to pay for lodging, materials, and related expenses. Plus additional funds are needed for the group’s gas and food expenses for the week. Bake sales are held the third Sunday of each month to help raise funds for the trip (additional fundraising plans are in the works). We also welcome donations and sponsorships for our volunteers. For more information about getting involved in this year’s trip or how you may further support this effort, please contact Dan & Séan Fejes (330-274-2481), pick up a flyer from the Narthex, and/or check out our Appalachian Experience website page under Ministries & Organizations (flyer & participation form links available).

CONFIRMATION 2015 Our congratulations are extended to the young people of our parish who received the Sacrament of Confirmation on Tuesday, January 13, 2015. Let us give thanks to God that the life of faith continues to flourish in St. Joseph. We welcome the work of the Spirit which these now fully initiated members represent in our parish life.

4C’s COLLECTION NEXT WEEKEND The Crestwood Coalition for Community Care Food Cupboard is finding itself in need of replenishing its food reserves. Your help for families in need is greatly appreciated. Items that are needed include: canned and boxed items, laundry and cleaning supplies, and paper and products. St. Joseph’s monthly collection is next weekend, February 14/15. Thanks for the helping hand! THE GOOD NEWS The first reading today from the Book Job speaks to the toil, turbulence, and tragedy often encountered in life. The reading from Matthew’s Gospel. However, tells how Jesus offers meaning and hope despite the adversity. Against the turbulence and tragedy that persists today, the Church continues to offer hope and meaning through the Gospel (“the good news”). The Catholic Exponent, your diocesan newspaper, shines the light of the Gospel on the world’s troubles to help us understand, offering news, commentary, Scripture reflection, and adult faith formation. Subscribe or renew your subscription today by dropping the “Special Contribution Envelope” for your packet in the collection basket. Find hope and meaning. Read the Exponent.
