Diocesan Wedding Anniversary Mass

Children’s Liturgy of the Word Children 4 years old to 4th grade are taken to the Chapel to listen to the readings at their level of understanding. They return to Mass after the Prayer of the Faithful. A good opportunity for confirmation candidates to get service hours by helping out.

“So be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect.” In today’s Gospel, we continue to hear the lessons Jesus is teaching us how to live in righteousness that goes beyond the mere letter of the law. Today’s first lesson involves how justice is enacted in Jewish law. In the ancient world, vengeance was often extreme. Because God wanted his people to practice justice, not vengeance, he limited retribution so that it equaled the crime committed. Jesus takes this one step further by saying we should offer no resistance. Does this mean we let others take advantage of us? No, but it does remind us that seeking justice may not be necessary in every situation. Letting go of wrongs that are not actually harmful is one way we grow in righteousness. It is a way of not letting pride control our interactions with others. Jesus uses common first century examples to illustrate this: fist fights, borrowing clothing or other items, and being conscripted by the army for the legally allowed one mile of service. We may never encounter these situations, but we all have times when we can let go of a slight or let ourselves be inconvenienced without any hope of reward. The second lesson focuses on loving as God loves, that is, choosing to love everyone, even one’s enemies. This does not mean we cannot defend ourselves if threatened, but it does mean seeking the good of others, even if all we can do is pray for them. This breaks us out of the self-interested habits lived by those who do not believe in God. Jesus concludes, “So be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect.” This can be a frustrating verse since we know we are very much imperfect. Therefore, we need to understand what perfect means in this context. The Greek word for perfect has the sense of “wholeness” or “completion”. It does not ignore moral goodness, but it is more about fulfilling one’s purpose or goal. Jesus’ goal for us in today’s Gospel is that we live in righteousness. When we live righteously, we are fulfilling our purpose because we are made in the image and likeness of God, who is righteous.

Get Well Soon On Ash Wednesday we begin Lent, a season that lasts until Easter. We wear ashes and remember how short our lives are. That may be hard to believe when you are young, but it gets easier to believe as you grow older. The ashes help us know our place and let other people know it. We are marked with a cross – a sign of suffering and a sign of healing. The ashes are made from the burned-up palms, from last year’s Palm Sunday. Just think – when Lent is nearly over, spring will be here and we will have fresh green palms once again. Adults begin Lent with a fast: very skimpy meals and no food in between. It seems simple, and it is. Older children may want to join in the adult’s fast. It can remind us how often we just pop things into our mouths, without thinking. We skip meat today, too, and every Friday until Easter. Long ago, it was more than meat. On every day of Lent, people did not eat meat, eggs, butter, oil or cheese. That left fish, grains, vegetables, flour and water – it was a healthier way to eat! Today, many people think that the old-fashioned Lenten fast is a smart way for humans to eat. Your family can talk about ways you can keep the fast of Lent. Talk about ways to become healthier and holier by Easter!

Helping Hands . . . Our Parish Ministry where parishioners seek to be the hands of Christ. These parishioners support other members by providing transportation to/from church, doctor appointments, food shopping, etc. Give us a

call! Also, if you are in need of some help, please call Judy Williams (429-5548) from the 1st through the 15th of each month and Sally Chew (795-5049) from the 16th to the end of the month. We are always looking for more volunteers to join the many men and women of our parish who fill this vital need. If you can bring someone with you to Mass or offer a ride to someone unable to drive, we will work around your schedule. We now require one week’s notice for arranging rides to doctors, physical therapy, etc.

The Women’s Club meets the fourth Wednesday of every month at 12:00 p.m., in the SVP Chapel. They sponsor the St. Patrick’s Day Luncheon, coffee and donuts after Mass every 1st Friday, and bake sales. They are a social group, but are always there

when the Parish needs them. The next regular gathering is scheduled for Wednesday, March 25, 2020. Open to everyone. Come and join us!!

JESUS CALLING~~ STOP JUDGING AND EVALUATING YOURSELF, for this is not your role. Above all, stop comparing yourself with other people. This produces feelings of pride or inferiority, sometimes a mixture of both. I lead each of My children along a path that is uniquely tailor-made for him or her. Comparing is not only wrong; it is also meaningless. Don’t look for affirmation in the wrong places: your own evaluations or those of other people. The only source of real affirmation is My unconditional Love. Many believers perceive Me as an unpleasable Judge, angrily searching out their faults and failures. Nothing could be farther from the truth! I died for your sins so that I might clothe you in My garments of salvation. This is how I see you: radiant in My robe of righteousness. When I discipline you, it is never in anger or disgust; it is to prepare you for face-to-face fellowship with Me throughout all eternity. Immerse yourself in My loving Presence. Compassionate Angels Ours is a Ministry of Presence - giving of oneself doing things you do in everyday life for those in our Community of Faith (giver) to those experiencing a time of challenge. Companioning is a major need for those of all

ages who are alone. No amount of time is too little or too much! We also need to hear from those willing to receive our assistance (receiver). Love your enemies, easier said than done, no doubt. But, remember, the foundation of Stewardship is prayer. When we are in close communication with God, it opens our heart and it turns our attention away from “me” and moves it towards God and others. It allows us to have a little more empathy for “our enemy.” When we pray for others, even “our enemies,” maybe it softens their hearts as well.

Hands of St. Francis - Meets the 3rd Wednesday of the month

This ministry determines ways to assist those in our area that are marginalized, impoverished and in need of Christian

love and support. The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, March 18th.

The Prayer Shawl Ministry is a worldwide ecumenical movement. Shawls are knitted or crocheted as an expression of love to others and of the loving God who created us. Recipients are those suffering from illness or loss but,

also, for occasions of celebration. Members find that blessings ripple from person to person with both the giver and receiver feeling the loving embrace of God. The Ministry meets on the 3rd Wednesday of the month, September through May. Sessions take place at the St. Vincent Pallotti, Rectory at 1:00 PM. Our next gathering is scheduled on Wednesday, March 18th.

Welcome in the Season of Lent Wednesday, February 26, 2020, is Ash Wednesday, and the official beginning of

the Lenten season, the most solemn time of the year for Christian churches. In contrast to the Season of Advent, the Lenten season is a much calmer time in the church’s calendar. It begins with flair because so many people scramble to get ashes on their foreheads. Then there is quietness until the next big giveaway with the distribution on palms. In between the ashes and the palms, what is expected of us? We are expected to fast and abstain at times, to be more devotional. To be more conscious of our mortality so that we may more worthily share in immortality, to pray steadily, and to listen. The vast majority of Americans pray, but how many recognize when God has answered? In the bustle of daily life, it's easy to overlook the quiet nudges, the subtle answers, and the little ways in which the Creator responds. GOD WHISPERS isn't as much about how to pray as it is about how to listen. In prayer, you are challenged to live with a tender heart as well as open eyes and ears to the countless ways in which God speaks. "God is big. He could use anything to communicate with His people," author Margaret Feinberg writes. "He could fill the sky with messages that beam in the atmosphere for hours. He could paint His words in nature using tree bark, blooming flowers, or freshly fallen snow. In modern times, He could send an email, call someone's cell or leave a voice mail message." "But He doesn't. He takes a much more subtle approach. Finishing Strong: Spirituality of Living and Dying The older we get, the more conscious we become of the reality of death. As our loved ones die, we realize that we, too, one day will return to God. In these two sessions, we will reflect on how we can live the last years of our lives in grace and with peace, and how we can face the reality of our own death with hope and even joy. Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center is holding a book drive for pediatric patients of the Osborn Family Health Center located at Lourdes in Camden. Osborn is a primary healthcare center for the underserved with over 5,000 children

in their care. The books will go to their Reach Out and Read program which helps children learn to read. New or gently used children’s books are needed for families to encourage reading. By giving books to families when they visit their pediatrician, parents read more to their children. Books are needed for ages 6 mos. to 5 yrs. old, board books, picture books and bilingual books (Spanish-English). The box is located in the vestibule of SVP Church and Newton Ave foyer in St. Aloysius.
