Targeting Math

Tamara Price Inclusive Learning Through Adjustments and Personalised Plan

Every teacher uses a unique and purposeful approach towards teaching and learning for every one of their students. Sometimes these approaches require a teacher to make a few extra adjustments within their classroom to support a student’s learning. When this occurs, teachers utilise Personalised Plans to document and track that students’ progress and adjustment being made, to assure that, as a teacher and school community, we are providing the best environment for learning success. Adjustments and Personalised Plans enable students with disabilities and/or additional learning and support needs to access syllabus outcomes, content and the school community as a whole, on the same basis as their peers. This can be whole-school, in the classroom and at an individual student level. Adjustments could include specific resources/tools, additional instructions, small group activities, 1:1 support, participation in

intervention or actions required for serious medical conditions. Personalised Plans are not only a beneficial document for teachers to support students, they are also a requirement of the Government via the Disability Standards for Education Act (2005). Students who have a Personalised Plan may or may not have a diagnosed disability, it is a tool that any student may be included in when the need arises. Teachers will discuss and review the support they are providing for all students, including those being supported through specific adjustments and have a Personalised Plan, during parent-teacher meetings. These meetings may be during the formal beginning and end of year parent-teacher meetings or during alternatives times as determined by the parent/carer and teacher. It is during this time that teachers will collaborate with you to share ideas, information about support and intervention services as well as goals for moving forward. At St Joseph’s we continue to explore ways to better meet the needs of every learner and ensure parents are engaged in their child’s learning. Should you have any questions about adjustments, Personalised Plans or the support for your son or daughter please do not hesitate to contact us. We appreciate the opportunity to work with you to provide the best education for your child. Rebecca Pascall Inclusion and Diverse Learning Teacher
