Dear Parents,

The Feast of Mary Mackillop is celebrated on August 8th. Mary Mackillop is Australia’s first canonized saint and she has a very special significance for our school as she founded the Sisters of St Joseph who started our school back in 1932. It was Mary Mackillop’s passion for her faith and her vision that children in disadvantaged and isolated areas were deserving of Catholic Education that led her to start the order known as the Sisters of St Joseph’s. The first teachers at our school were Sisters Michael, Carmen and Peter (they all took saints names) and the last nuns to teach were Sisters Patricia and Joan who left the school in 1986. This year we are celebrating this Feast day with a visit from Bishop Patrick O’Regan to our school. Bishop Pat will officially bless the multipurpose room and it will be then be known as the Mary Mackillop Room. Parents are warmly invited to attend this special ceremony. Parents are asked to be seated by 3.00pm. Mary Mackillop had a great motto in life: Never see a need without doing something about it. Like Mary Mackillop, we ask God to help us recognize those in need and then respond to the need.

GRANDPARENTS DAY

Please let our grandparents know to set aside Friday 21st August for our annual

celebration. Invitations and requests for helpers and food donations for this event have been sent out. Thank you to those who have indicated they can help with catering. To help with catering we need to know how many grandparents are coming so please return the notices.

Responsible use of technology Parents are reminded that it is important to monitor your children’s use of iPads and other digital devices. Parents can restrict access to sites on the ipad in the settings section (if unsure we can help you with this). You should also periodically look at the browser history to see the sites your children are looking at. Parents should also monitor the time children spend on digital devices at home ensuring that there is extended times where children are involved in other play and activities.

PAPER MACHE This term students are creating 'useful' containers from paper mâché. The preps and year one students are making square containers using plastic recycled milk cartons as their base and the students in years two to six are making round containers using balloons and recycled cardboard as their base. The students are loving the process of combining wallpaper paste and recycled office paper to make a solid paper mâché object. They are also studying the history of paper mâché using their IPads and designing good research questions to which they find answers. They will be preparing a document with their information using an IPad app such as 'Pic collage' to present their findings. Each week they take photos of their progress and these photos will also be used to document their learning journey. I can't wait to see where their imaginations take them when they start to build upon their strong paper mâché constructions and bring them alive with paint and lots of 'Bling' additions. Please feel free to drop into the art room on a Tuesday to join in the creation process.
