Triple A News Welcome to Triple A news for 2019. Our Triple A Leaders for this year are

Toby Griffiths and Scarlett Eddy. To start the year we are having a blitz on wearing the correct school uniform. We have looked around the playground and have noticed these areas of greatest need; * Sports shorts to be worn only on nominated sport days * Our summer uniform should be worn with all black shoes * School hats, with our school logo are the only hats to be worn This year classroom teachers will be sending a note home if a child is found in the incorrect school uniform. The first time will be a warning after that the student may miss out on a portion of their recess until the issue is resolved. Let’s wear our uniform proudly and properly!

Prep Term 1 Week 3 Newsletter Welcome to a fun-filled year of living and learning in Prep. We have had a fabulous start and all children have settled in well. They are building relationships with each other and their teachers and are becoming more confident in their new environment. The days are warm and by the afternoon we are all ready for a rest, teachers too! We will share with you the activities we have done so far. Buddies

Ob Surveys and Parent/Teacher/Student Interviews We are enjoying getting to know your child through our Numeracy and Literacy testing as well as the chats we have during P/T/S interviews. If you have been unable to attend please feel free to make another time that would suit you. Contact the office or use Seesaw. We are asking for volunteers to assist in the classroom, particularly between 9am-11am as you are a vital part in ensuring our Literacy program runs effectively. It is a great opportunity for you to observe the way we teach Reading, Writing and Spelling and then use the same process at home.

Preps

Preps have been introduced to their Grade 6

buddies and we shared a lunch together last

week. The Grade 6s will assist us in the

playground if we need help and work with us

in the classroom once each week. We

encourage them to build a positive, friendly

relationship with their Prep buddy so that we

as Preps feel safe and happy at school and

they, as Senior students, continue to grow to

be responsible, nurturing people

Junior Newsletter – Term 1 Week 3

Welcome back! We hope you had a lovely Christmas Break. It was great to meet many of our families at our

Parent/Teacher/Student Conferences on Tuesday. We are getting organised to set up our year and we ask

Juniors Juniors

We will be sending home “Take Home Readers” next week. We encourage lots of discussion about the book before reading it to your child. This helps with prediction and vocabulary building. Look through the whole book and TALK through it first. Use the vocabulary from the book. We also include a Spelling Book that involves reading the sentence of the week, sounding out of the focus word using fingers and then the spelling of that word. The words in blue are “Common Words” otherwise known as “Coloured Words”. This spelling approach allows us to cover more sounds and common words in a year, in a meaningful context. If you are unsure how to use this book please contact us.

that you please take note of important reminders to ensure you are up to date with what is going on in and

around our classrooms day to day.

SeeSaw A note was sent home last week on Friday inviting you to join your child’s class via the SeeSaw app. Even

if you have used Seesaw in the past, you will need to register again via the new code sent home to ensure

you will be connected to your child’s new teachers for this year. If you have not received the invitation,

please contact your child’s teacher and we will arrange to send another one home. This will be an excellent

communication tool for your teachers to share photos/announcements with you. We will continue to use the

student communication diaries for daily communication between home and school.

Homework/Spelling This week we have started sending home readers, diaries and spelling homework. We ask that students read

each night, have their diary signed at home and return their reader folder to school each day. As some

children are reading longer books they may only read a chapter or a few pages each night. Their spelling

sheet is optional as an extra opportunity to practise for their spelling test on Friday.

SPECIALIST CLASSES Art/Library/Sport/LOTE: Our specialist classes will be on a Tuesday and Wednesday and will be on a rotational basis, swapping

every 5 weeks. The children need to wear their sports uniform on either Tuesday or Wednesday depending

on their PE day. Please see underneath to check which day your child has PE. This will swap in in Week 6

and we will remind you beforehand.

WEEKS 1-5

Tuesday Junior East (JUNIOR A & JUNIOR F): PE

Junior West (JUNIOR H & JUNIOR S): LOTE

WEEKS 1-5

Wednesday Junior East:(JUNIOR A & JUNIOR F) LOTE/ART

Junior West:(JUNIOR H & JUNIOR S) PE/LIBRARY

Sport: All our children will have an extra sport session on Friday, so please wear sports uniform on this day as

well.

Religion: In Religion we have been focusing on ‘Loving God & Others’. This encourages students to learn

about treating people the way you would like to be treated.

We are also learning to set up our daily prayer/meditation circles and how important it is to take the time out

to pray to God daily.

Literacy: In Literacy we have been enjoying students’ recounts of their holidays. We are beginning our

term with a focus on handwriting. The students have been practising correct letter formation and writing on

the dotted thirds.

Numeracy: Our Measurement unit has been a real hit to start our year. We have been learning about formal

and informal units of measurement, measuring things around our room and graphing our student heights. We

will be moving onto our Place Value Focus this week.

Reading We have posters in our classrooms to display your child’s Reading Day. This has also been written in their

diaries. Every child is expected to read to an adult each day before school. On their reading day they are

expected to read to their teacher.

Inquiry We have begun our Inquiry Unit titled ‘I Belong, You Belong’. We have discussed belonging and how it

feels to belong to a family/ school/ community. Continuing with this theme we are encouraging the students

to take responsibility for their role as a class member. We are beginning our unit with a focus on Growth

Mindset and Goal Setting. When students believe that dedication and hard work can change their

performance in school, they grow to become resilient, successful students.

teacher for a specific reason, please make a time to catch up as the mornings are very busy with morning

reading.

We are looking forward to a great term working with you.

Sue, Jen, Dee, Alli, Virginia, Jordyn, Bern, Jane, Naomi & Karlene.

Welcome back to another year of learning in our Middle School. We are very excited about getting to know

the students better over the next few weeks, as well as having a more settled time after swimming.

Our team this year:

Middle South is being taught by Ebony Miechel and Rachael Morrison with Amanda Lukies assisting in her

role as Learning Support Officer.

Middle North consists of Sara Whitford and Kelly Newman (Wednesday, Thursday, Friday)/Trish Chmiel

(Monday, Tuesday) with Amy Williams assisting in her role as Learning Support Officer.

We are all very approachable and are happy to stop and have a chat about any concerns. “Our door is always

open.”

Literacy Our first genre we will be studying is Report Writing. We have begun our Smart Spelling program this week

with the children completing sound, visual and meaning strategies on their group of words each week.

All children should now have a home reader. We strongly encourage you to keep these in your St Joseph’s

folders (from Prep) for protection of your book and your diary, it is also an ideal place to carry your

homework to and from school. Our expectation is that all children read each school night and have their

diary signed by a parent/guardian each night. It is also a great help if you indicate what pages your child has

read (at least 10).

The students should know what morning is their morning to read to the teacher. On the other mornings they

just need to show their signed diary.

Mathematics Our first topic is Place Value. We are completing lots of work around reading and writing numbers with

emphasis on their place value positions. Some groups will look at renaming numbers eg, 1356 can also be

recorded as 13 hundreds, 5 tens and 6 ones. We are also doing lots of counting and practice of number

strategies (building to 10 (or 100) and doubles an early focus)

Swimming We are so very proud of the children in our area that participated in Swimming on Friday as well as the

practices during the week. Everybody tried their best, it was especially great to see the Year 3 students

embrace this new opportunity – we even had a number of 50m Year 3 swimmers. Well done.

Reminders * With such a hot start to the year please ensure all children have a school hat and a drink bottle.

* School Uniform – we are having a blitz in our area about wearing our gorgeous uniform proudly. Could

you please support this by checking that your child is coming to school with the correct shorts, hat and

shoes. This also includes jewellery, hair ties and nail polish. Studs and sleepers are allowed for earrings, no

nail polish, school colours in hair ties and all black shoes.

Specialist Classes * Specialist classes are on Wednesday’s. Two classes will have sport and library and the other two classes

will have L.O.T.E and Art. This swaps half way through the term. The classes that miss either Sport and

LOTE on Wednesday’s will have a lesson on Friday’s.

* All middle students can wear their Sports uniform each Wednesday and Friday.

* Library Books to be brought to school each Wednesday – classes that don’t have library that week will

ensure the students have an opportunity to change books during the day.

Thank you to all the Year Five and Six students on the settled manner in which they have begun the School

year. We regard all of the students as leaders of the school and therefore will approach discipline through

this lens. In the Senior School, we expect our students to set the standard in regard to their behaviour and

attitude towards others and their schoolwork.

Swimming Sports

The Swimming sports were a great success and it was wonderful to see all of our students determined to try

their best and get points for their house. A great team spirit was evident. A highlight is not always the fastest

swimmer but the swimmer that has finished his/her race and stands at the end of the pool cheering on others

in the same race or the child that is determined to swim 50m in each event regardless of what a huge

physical effort it was or the place they got.

Opening Year Mass and Year 6 Leadership

This year we welcome back Brooke Williams to our Senior area and our new teacher Liam Booth to our

team. The unit is being led by Adam Stirton and Therese will be continuing her Welfare role on Thursdays

and Fridays, whilst Kim Boulton steps into the class for those two days. We are also very fortunate to have

Di Thorne full time as Learning Support Officer and Deb Cairns as Literacy Support. Ray will continue his

role with Maths Extension. We all look forward to working with your child to support their individual needs.

Homework

Homework is handed out to everyone on Friday afternoon and is to be completed neatly by the next Friday

morning. Homework is designed so that each student can complete it stress free and with minimal guidance.

It is to help further develop their organisational and time management skills in preparation for Secondary
