TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

WELCOME THE STRANGER We have become accustomed to seeing pictures in the media and stories on the news about immi-grants from Latin America and ref-ugees from Syria fleeing violence and destruction in their own coun-tries, trying to make their way to a safe place. We have also seen the reactions of people who want to keep them away from their coun-tries, who fail to welcome the stranger and the helpless children. Have we forgotten Jesus’ call to comfort the homeless and the stranger? “They shall bring all your brothers and sisters from all the nations... to Jerusalem, my holy mountain, says the LORD.” In the three readings for this day, we are told that we are to wel-come these strangers, to welcome the discipline of the Lord, which leads to peace, and to “strive to enter through the narrow gate” into the glory of God’s own homeland, the reign of God.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONS

The wonderful diversity of life and worship among Roman Catholics of East and West is an example of God writing straight with crooked lines. The steady hand of the villainous Emperor Diocletian drew a line across Europe and Africa that split the empire in two, and for the most part determined how Christians would worship two thousand years later. Italy’s heel and the far northern city of Trieste fell on the Eastern side, and have had a form of Eastern liturgy ever since. Constantinople, which soon became the seat of the Roman Empire, became a base for Chris-tianizing the East up to Russia and Poland. Poland was on the Eastern side, but a series of wars and medieval mayhem pushed the religious boundary back to the Ukraine, and Poland remains an outpost of the Latin Church to this day. An old rule of thumb declared that whatever religion was observed by the local prince, the people had to follow. This gave rise to persecu-tion and migration as people sought toleration for their expressions of faith. In the United States, we are accustomed to peaceful collaboration among Christians of East and West, a situation that challenges churches that still feel the pinch of age-old division.

No one is to be excluded from the kingdom for all peoples are called to proclaim the praises of the Lord and confess his holy name. No ethnic or religious group possesses exclusive right to the kingdom (1, Ps, 3). Suffering and pain are part of the human condition (2).

FIRST READING—ISAIAH 66:18-21 Brothers and sisters of every race and language

will be brought to Jerusalem.

PSALM—PSALM 117 Go out to all the world and tell the Good News.

SECOND READING—HEBREWS 12:5-7 Be strong and endure your trials as the "discipline" of a loving God,

for it will result in the peaceful fruit of righteousness.

GOSPEL—LUKE 13:22-30 People from east and west, north and south,

recline at table in the kingdom of God

TURN YOUR EAR, O LORD, AND ANSWER ME; SAVE THE SERVANT WHO TRUSTS IN YOU, MY GOD. HAVE MERCY ON ME, O LORD, FOR I CRY TO YOU ALL THE DAY LONG. PSALM 86:1-3

O GOD, who cause the minds of the faithful to unite in a single pur-pose, grant your people to love what you command and to desire what you promise, that, amid the uncertainties of this world, our hearts may be fixed on that place where true gladness is found. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

NEW BIBLE STUDY FOR COUPLES STARTING THIS FALL We are looking to form a group of St. Joseph couples that can learn together more about the Bible while offering com-munity and support to each other. We will eat, socialize and work on our study during each session. For our first study, we will take the year to complete The Bible Timeline from Ascen-sion Press. The Bible Timeline study program takes you on a guided journey through salvation history. Presenter Jeff Cavins will show us how fourteen of the Bible’s narrative books tell the biblical story from beginning to end and give us the keys to understanding the amazing story woven throughout Scripture.

This group will start September 18 and meet from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. every other Wednesday, breaking for holidays and summer. We will meet in the home of Ron and Abby Novak, who will be facilitating this wonderful study. The study guide can be purchased through Ascensionpress.com and is $35.95+ S&H with online access to the videos.

Please RSVP by the first week of September to [email protected].

FMI email Abby at the address above. Space is limited so we will take the first eight couples to sign up!

LETTER TO ALL ADORERS Beloved adorers of Jesus,

All are invited to the annual Adoration meeting on Satur-day, September 14, at 8:00 a.m. We will start with Mass presided by Father Tyler.

The presence of each of you is very important. If we want to strengthen the structure of our Perpetual Adora-tion, we need formation which supports our hour of ad-oration.

Most of the problems we are facing in our Perpetual Adoration come from the fact that the majority of ador-ers are not coming to the formation proposed. We have only 3 times of formation every year (Meeting of Sep-tember, Advent Meeting and Lenten Meeting).

Know that for the meeting of September 2019, the ador-ers of Lincoln (about 30 people) will come to learn from us. Let’s give them a great welcome!

Please mark the date in your calendar now. It will be a great job for Jesus to see all his adorers gathered on that day to glorify his name.

Fr Eliseo!

Stepping Stones Time is Money—Our Amazing Volunteers

The St. Joseph Core Team salutes our awe-some volunteers. Their contributions of their time, talent, and efforts towards planning for our permanent church thus far have saved our parish over $110,000.00 in professional services and over $78,00.00 in volunteer hours.

In April 2019, the Independent Sector announced that the latest value of a volunteer hour nationally is $25.43 for non-professional time. Since we began work on our permanent church in 2017, our volunteers have logged over 3,000 non-professional hours. Volunteers have also contributed professional services eliminating the need for us to engage consultants to perform marketing research, programming, and data compilation. Our volunteers bring a wide range of contributions towards accomplishing the Core Team’s Phase III Project Vision: to build a timeless, permanent Catholic church. Their contributions include: gathering input from our parishioners, staff, ministry and group leaders; programming skills; architectural, building, and engineering expertise; interior design and landscaping experience; marketing and financial skills; contacting and visiting recently built Catholic churches to learn from their experience; conduct-ing reference checks and gathering data on architectural firms; researching decom-missioned churches as a possible resource for stained glass, statues, furnishing, and religious art; and a deep desire and enthusiasm to help us accomplish our goal. Their efforts will enable us to communicate the desires and needs of our community to an architectural firm, saving us dollars in billable hours and change orders when we begin construction. We are blessed to have a fantastic group of volunteers that have stepped forward to serve on the various sub-committees for our permanent church. In upcoming Step-ping Stones columns, we will introduce you to our great team of volunteers and list additional volunteer opportunities.

Together,greatthingscanbeaccomplished.
