Saint Camillus * Patron of the Sick and of Nurses

This coming Wednesday, July 18, the Church observes the Feaof St. Camillus, although not well-known, led an interesting life, ging from roughneck gambler to a great saint and lovable human being. He was born in Italy in 1550 and his mother died when he wachild. His dad was a soldier and often away from home, neglectinhis son. Camillus spent his younger years gambling and fighting.

By age 17, he was a robust young man, 6 foot 6 inches tall withlot of muscle. He posed a threat to many in his village and some wglad when he left to join his Dad as a soldier. However, while in tarmy, he acquired an incurable disease where his legs broke out in

painful sores that got infected, forcing him to admit himself to a hpital in Rome. This was a humiliating experience for him, who habeen a proud soldier, but gambled most of his earnings away. Nowhe had to work as an attendant at the hospital in exchange for treament. He couldnt seem to beat his vices and finally he was kicked

out of the hospital for being quarrelsome and gambling. His legswerent completely healed at the time. In the next few years, he

fought in various armies, then gambled away his money, and usuafound himself hungry and homeless.

Around the age of 25, he underwent a dramatic conversion. He working for a Capuchin friar who had taken pity on him. The friarwitnessed Camillus fierce temper one day, and knowing about hi

gambling habit, he took him aside and spoke plainly to him about

God. Whatever the friar said must have suddenly opened Camillueyes for he sank to the ground and wept. He wanted to become aCapuchin, but couldn't because of his incurable disease. He decideto devote himself to the care of the sick and returned to the hospitthat had once dismissed him.

In those days, hospitals were purgatory on earth, as one write

put it. They were filthy with the smell of death and usually no nurand only a few doctors. Most attendants hated their job and werepoorly paid. Patients were often mistreated and left without food owater. Camillus fought evil with good and became a devoted careter of the poor. He took on the difficult tasks in the hospital and lovingly nursed the sick. He advanced to the superintendent of the hotal and fellow attendants vowed to imitate his example.

In 1584, Camillus was ordained a priest and founded the Orderdevoted to the care of the sick. An epidemic raged through Rome Camillus and his brothers distributed food and cared for the sick. When he retired, he had eight hospitals under his care. He died onJuly 18, 1614, at age 64 and was later named the patron of the sickand of nurses at his canonization. Articles by Marcel Norman

    July, A Time to Slowdown?

July opens the second half of 2012, right in the midst of summer, and according to some sociologists, an ideal time to slowdown, blockout some leisure time for you and your family, and just savor thesefew weeks when school isnt in session, summer ball leagues are

over, and no major holiday is facing us with its particular demands. You see, many of us have morphed into workaholics without realiz-ing it. We dont feel theres enough leeway in our schedules for just

relaxing. Well, summer provides that opportunity where we can

seriously plan some fun for a short time without feeling guilty. Are we living by a work ethic that says we must be doing some-

thing useful every minute? Shouldnt we have some time to wonder

or think? The great poets, artists, and inventors usually found time todream. Summer heat begs us to slowdown for a spell. Rejuvenationmight even occur that could make our return to work thrice blest!Give it a serious try sometime this summer to shed the responsibili-ties (not Mass!) and really have a few days of family fun. It doesnt

have to be expensive, just so you and your family are alone, together,

minus lifes daily burdens. And, please, leave cellphones at home!
