A GLIMPSE INTO THE HISTORY

Archdiocese of Verapoly

The Archdiocese of Verapoly was originally known asthe Vicariate of Malabar, which was erected by PopeAlexander VII on December 3, 1659 with Rev. Fr. JosephSebastiani, a Carmelite, as the Vicar Apostolic and having itsheadquarters eventually at Verapoly.

On March 13, 1709, Pope Clement XI suppressed theMalabar Vicariate and erected the Vicariate of Verapoly inits place with Bishop Angelo Francisco as its first VicarApostolic.

Pope Leo III raised the Vicariate of Verapoly to thestatus of an Archdiocese with his famous letter “HumanaeSalutis Auctor” of September 1, 1886, together with theestablishment of the Hierarchy of India. His Grace the MostRev. Dr. Leonard Mellano of St. Louis O.C.D. was the firstArchbishop who was the 17th in the line of the VicarsApostolic.

When Ernakulam became the centre of Latin CatholicPopulation, Archbishop Bernard of Jesus Arguinzonis O.C.D.transferred the headquarters of the Archdiocese from the islandof Verapoly to Ernakulam in 1904.

St. Joseph’s Minor SeminaryVianney Home

Until 1891, there had been no minor seminaries inthe Vicariate of Verapoly. The aspirants had been initiatedin the Syrian formation houses, the so-called“Malpanates”. But, Archbishop Bernadine O.C.D., thethen Vicar Apostolic suppressed these Malpanates andstarted more systematic formation programme. Thosecandidates who were to join the Puthenpally MajorSeminary were given training in the boarding attachedto Puthenpally High School. It was only in 1896 thatofficial minor seminary was established in theArchdiocese by Archbishop Leonard Mellano. Theseminary functioned in a building near St. Philomena’sHigh School, Koonammavu. Rev. Fr. Bernard O.C.D., wholater became the Archbishop, was the first Rector.

When St.Philomena’s High School was discontinuedand St. Albert’s High School was started in Ernakulam in1907, the seminary was also shifted to Ernakulam. In1908 St. Joseph’s Petit Seminary was inaugurated in apiece of land called “Thumba-parambu”, opposite to St.Albert’s High School. The Rector of the seminary was Rev.Fr. Liguori O.C.D.

On August 10, 1911 the seminary was again shiftedto the building near the present Archbishop’s House. Thenew building was constructed in 1913 and Rev. Fr. SyriacO.C.D. was appointed the Rector. The boys who showedsome aptitude to priestly vocation were admitted to theseminary after the lower primary school.

In 1964, St. Joseph’s Minor Seminary was foundedin Angel Mary Nagar, Kalamassery, by ArchbishopJoseph Attipetty with the view to send the seminariansfor pre-degree courses to the nearby St. Paul’s Collegeafter an year of Seminary Initiation Course. Rt. Rev. Msgr.George Ittikunnath was its first Rector. In 1981, anauditorium and a dormitory were built as extension byArchbishop Dr. Joseph Kelanthara, when Rev. Fr. JosephKuttickal was the Rector.

In 1994 SSLC was made the minimum qualificationfor admission into the seminary. Realizing the need ofthe time, the seminarians began to be sent for degreecourse to St. Paul’s College where they had been doingtheir pre-degree courses.

Later, when the pre-degree course wasdiscontinued at St. Paul’s College, the seminarians weresent to St. Joseph’s EMHSS, Thrikkakara for their highersecondary education course. As there were six groups ofstudents under one roof, the initiation students wereaccomodated in the renovated Vianney Home MinorSeminary, Kalamassery since 1998, when Very Rev.Msgr. Mathew Elanjimattam was the Rector. The building

was blessed by His Grace Archbishop DanielAcharuparambil on July 12, 1998.

From the year 2007, the Higher Secondarystudents were accomodated at a new house, John PaulBhavan at Attipetty Nagar, Kakkanad.

His Grace Daniel Acharuparambil for whom theminor seminary is the heart of the Archdiocese, whostarted Vianney Home Seminary left for his eternalreward on October 26, 2009.

His Excellency Rt. Rev. Dr. Joseph Karikkassery,former Rector of the seminary was the administratoruntil His Grace Dr. Francis Kallarackal became theMetropolitan Archbishop of Verapoly. Aftercompleting six years of his archbishopric he resignedon 31st October 2016. His Grace the Most Rev. Dr.Joseph Kalathiparambil an ardent lover of theSeminarians with his vision, became the MetropolitanArchbishop of Verapoly on 18th December 2016. Hecontinues to inspire and guide us.

In the Academic year 2012-13, it was againdecided that the seminarians would be given highersecondary education at St. Joseph’s EMHSS,Thrikkakkara. The seminarians who were to do highersecondary education were shifted to St. Joseph’s MinorSeminary which had been occupied previously by thedegree students alone, when Very Rev. Dr. VincentVariath was the Rector.
