COORDINATING PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
IDEAS TO CHANGE YOUR LIFE I recently read a small book by author and speaker Jonathan Doyle called ‘Bridging The Gap’. It is a very easy read that contains some great common sense wisdom for any of us who wish to lead fuller, happier lives. In this book, Jonathan outlines the following eight simple yet challenging ideas that can change the game plan of your life: 1. DECIDE. If any of us want to grow and change for the better, the first thing we have to do is to simply decide that we can be better and do better and we need to make changes in our life. This usually means that we have to make a decision to cut off from certain foods or eating patterns, harmful relationships, career choices, life style habits and so on. It is not easy to do but it can be done. 2. CONSIDER YOUR REFERENCE GROUPS. There is an old saying ‘If you lie down with dogs you get up with fleas’. Sociologists tell us that we will rise as high in life as the five people you spend the most time with, that is, with what Jonathan calls ‘your reference group’. The reality is that the people we spend most time with have a high impact on us – they will either inspire us to do better or make us feel OK with mediocrity. 3. OBSTACLES ARE YOUR FRIENDS. It is natural to try and avoid obstacles in life, however, it is precisely the hardships we face that make us extraordinary. The life of people like Viktor Frankl and Nelson Mandela are great examples of people who overcame obstacles in life to win the admiration of generations. 4. THRESHOLD EXPERIENCES. These are experiences in life which place us out of our comfort zone and help us to perform at levels exceptionally beyond what we thought was possible. In most cases we have to seek out ‘threshold experiences’ that challenge us to overcome our deepest fears that are holding us back from living a fuller life. 5. KNOWLEDGE. To change and grow in a rapidly changing world we ‘have to know stuff’. There is no substitute for learning and for a good education. Good literacy and numeracy skills have never been so important as the basis for success. Every day, Stephen Covey says, ‘you need to be sharpening the saw.’ Each of us has to be continually upskilling. Jonathan Doyle says ‘the goal is to use knowledge to make yourself irreplaceable as quickly as possible’. 6. ASK FOR WHAT YOU WANT. Jonathan argues that we all need to stand up for ourselves and start asking for what we want and for what we need. You can start asking for help with things you don’t understand, for respect, understanding, better seats, introductions and so on. You can only change things in your life if you have the courage to ask and make asking a habit for life. 7. FEAR. Fear is the great destroyer. Fear of rejection, fear of embarrassment, fear of failure and so on. The real you is not the one that lives in fear. The real you is vibrant, alive and free. 8. PERSEVERANCE. Sometimes, things in life are really hard and there are times when nothing seems to be going right for us. The temptation is to make excuses and to give up. Every day we have a choice, to quit or to keep going. The author finishes with the warning that ‘bridging the gap is tough work’ and the reality is that many people will not do it. To become the person we have the potential to be ‘means overcoming failure, fear, obstacles and making hard choices. All that requires perseverance’. Mr Jim O’Brien Coordinating Principal
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
College Welcomes Director of Lismore Catholic Schools This week St Joseph’s Regional College welcomed our Director of Catholic Schools, Mr David Condon to our community. David had the opportunity to meet with College Captains, Lisa Fraser and Shaun Hinton and Vice-Captain, Jamie Lightfoot. David spoke very highly of our captains’ engaging manner and insightful perceptions. David then met with the Leadership Team to discuss our current and future directions as a College in our region. On behalf of the College community I would like to thank David for taking time out of his busy schedule to be with us. Principal’s Awards This week we also had the opportunity to complete our second round of Principal’s Awards. Congratulations to all students who have shown incredible leadership in their learning over the past term. A special note of congratulations goes to Eamon Mahon who received a Coordinating Principal’s Award.

Cross Country Congratulations to all students who gained major placing’s in our most recent Cross Country. Many thanks to Mr Cannon and staff who coordinated this event. For a full list of results please see the Sports section of the newsletter. Jesus Reminds us to Say No to Bullying At this week’s assembly our Mr Delaney and College Leaders, Lisa Fraser and Sam Turner challenged the College community about the reality of bullying, non-acceptance and exclusion of others. Using the Luke’s Parable of the Good Samaritan as a point of reference, we were reminded of Jesus’ words to “love our neighbour as we would ourselves”. Students then wore “Say NO to Bullying” wristbands for the day to serve as a reminder of our commitment to becoming a more tolerant, understanding and compassionate community. Luminosity 2014 Recently Christa Morrow was invited to speak at the ‘Young Guns’ breakfast for sponsors and local businesses. Luminosity is 3 days of inspiring speakers and workshops to guide and mentor young people to success. Luminosity is about challenging today’s generation to become tomorrow’s leaders. The summit will be held on 16th -18th July, students interested in participating can see Mr O’Mullane for further information. Congratulations Christa on your participation with Luminosity. Equipping School Details Last week, Stephanie Figgins, our College Youth Ministry Officer along with Anna Cusack (Newman Senior Technical College), Brad Vergano (MacKillop Senior College) Amy Webb (St Paul’s High School) and Ellen Hales (St Agnes’ Parish) travelled to Canberra to attend an Equipping Schools gathering. This gathering offered a rich experience of Christian community whilst nurturing and developing youth leadership in the Catholic Church. From all accounts, it provided great benefits both personally and professionally for all participants; building a wonderful network with each other and the wider youth ministry community. God Bless Jim Dempsey College Principal

NEWS FROM PARISH ADMINISTRATION School Fees Review Central to the review of school fees has been the removal of the Building Fund Levy and the establishment of one single fee. As you would be aware, school fees are a very critical factor in supporting the operating costs of all Parish schools. In the process of moving towards one single school fee in 2015, it is important that the new school fees’ model is both equitable and affordable. Discounts for early payment and having multiple children enrolled in our schools will still apply. Fee assistance for those who may be experiencing financial difficulties will still be available. It is anticipated that the new 2015 fee structure will be finalised and communicated in the coming weeks.

FROM OUR LEADER OF CATECHESIS AND EVANGELISATION
. St Vincent de Paul Scholarship This week Mr Paul Scully and Ms Sarah Mason from the St Vincent de Paul Society presented Erin Badewitz with a student scholarship. Erin is a very deserving recipient of this scholarship and has been acknowledged for her tremendous contribution to the St Joseph’s Regional College community and in the wider community. Erin is a mature young lady with exceptional leadership skills. She has a very caring nature and is concerned about the welfare of others. In the college community, she has been involved in the retreat programs offered at the diocesan level including a three day Street Retreat in Brisbane. She has also been a student leader on some of these retreats. Involvement with Buddies Days, hamper distribution, blood donations and volunteering at McCosker House as part of an after school program are some of the ways she reaches out to others. The demonstration of her leadership skills have been witnessed in the organising of National Bandana Day and her participation in the National, Hunter and Northern division Canteen Leadership Camp. These are only some of the activities that Erin has been involved with that have touched the lives of others. Erin has also been a tremendous support for her mother who is battling cancer and the debilitating effects of chemotherapy treatment. We wish Erin all the best in her future endeavours. Congratulations Erin, you are a true Christian witness! Project Compassion Presently the College community has raised over $900 dollars for Project Compassion. Pastoral Care classes have been fantastic in organising a variety of fundraising activities to support Project Compassion. Some of these activities include cake stalls, raffles, drink sales, and the big Easter Egg raffle to come at the end of term. Thank you to the students and staff for their involvement, organisation and support of this worthy organisation.

HISTORY CLUB
The History Club is available to Year 7 students only and allows students to be involved in a practical aspect of the History Syllabus outside of normal class time. Our first major project will be the construction of a model Roman Bireme Ship (1:32 scale) imported from Spain. An initial meeting for interested students will be held at lunch time on Wednesday in F10 where students can find out more information and see the model. Those that are still interested can sign up that day and take an information sheet home. It is anticipated that the History Club will meet on Wednesday afternoons from 3.30pm to 5.00pm starting Week 10 (2nd April). This will hopefully allow parents to pick up students after work. It is essential that students can organise a way home to be part of the club.
Model dimensions 45cm wide, 97cm long and 55cm high. More than 600 white metal parts including 43 figures and complete war machines (catapult, Scorpion and Corvus). Photo-etched decks, resin hull and canvas sails. Note: Model requires a lot of painting of small parts and will take a long time to construct.

CREATIVE ARTS NEWS
STUDENT SERVICES NEWS At the request of the Australian Government, data will be collected this year on those students who are receiving adjustments and meet the definition of disability under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992. The handout below fully explains this process. If you DO NOT want your child included in this data collection please contact the school immediately.
If you would like further clarification on this process please do not hesitate to ring me at the College on 5525 4100.
Information for Parents/Carers Schools across Australia are taking part in a new national data collection on school students with disability. The data collection is being introduced in stages over three years, and started in 2013. From 2015, this information will be collected in every school across Australia, every year.
All Australian governments have agreed to this.
WHAT IS THE BENEFIT FOR MY CHILD?
All Australian governments agree that every child in an Australian school should have a high quality education. It shouldn’t matter what the individual child’s circumstances are – every child should have the same opportunity to succeed at school.
The aim of this new data collection is to have better information about school students with disability in Australia.
Better information about school students with disability will help teachers, principals and education authorities to support students with disability to take part in school on the same basis as students without disability.
WHY IS THIS DATA BEING COLLECTED?
There is nothing new about schools collecting information about students with disability – in fact, schools have had to do this by law for some time. But the type of information currently collected varies between each state and territory.
With the new data collection, every school in Australia will use the same method to collect this information – that is, a government school in suburban Sydney will collect and report data in the same way as a Catholic school in country Victoria and an independent school in the Northern Territory.
The information provided through this new national data collection will enable all Australian governments to better target support and resources to benefit students with disability. It will help to put the right supports in place for students with disability so that they have the same opportunities for a high quality education as students without a disability.
WHAT ARE SCHOOLS REQUIRED TO DO?
Every school in Australia is likely to have a student with disability at some point. Schools need to be able to support students with disability by removing any obstacles for them to participate in their education.
By law, schools are required to make reasonable adjustments where needed to assist students with disability. These responsibilities are outlined in the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005. This means that schools need to talk to the student and/or their parent/carer about reasonable adjustments. These are things the schools do now and this won’t change.
The new data collection will record students who have been identified by a school team as meeting the definition of disability under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and provided with an adjustment.
WHAT IS AN ADJUSTMENT? An adjustment is a measure or action taken to help a student with disability participate in education on the same basis as other students. Adjustments can be made across the whole school setting (like ramps into classrooms), in the classroom and at an individual student level (like extra tuition for a student with a learning difficulty).
WHAT INFORMATION WILL BE COLLECTED?
Your child’s school will collect and report information every year about:
• the level of adjustment provided • the number of students who receive each level of adjustment • where known, the student’s broad type of disability.
Some students who are not provided with an adjustment at the time of the collection will meet the definition of disability under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and will be eligible to be included in the data collection.
WHO WILL COLLECT MY CHILD’S INFORMATION?
Teachers and other school staff from your child’s school will collect the above information based on:
• consultation with parents/carers • the school team’s observations and professional judgements • any medical diagnosis • other relevant information.
School principals are responsible for making sure that the information collected about each student is accurate.
HOW WILL MY CHILD’S PRIVACY BE PROTECTED? Protecting the privacy and confidentiality of all children and their families is very important. With the new data collection, this will be done in the following ways:
• Personal or confidential information will not be given to anyone not authorised to see it. • When the information is sent by your child’s school to the local or federal education authority for combination with information from other schools,
it will be by school only – student names will not be recorded as part of the data collection. • When the information is reported from 2016 onwards, it will be by school only – student names will not be recorded as part of the data collection.
WHEN AND WHERE WILL THE DATA BE AVAILABLE?
When all Australian schools are taking part in the new data collection, the information will be reported on the My School website from 2016 onwards. It will be by school only – no student names are recorded as part of the data collection.
CAN I DECIDE WHETHER MY CHILD’S INFORMATION IS INCLUDED IN THE NATIONAL DATA COLLECTION?
It’s your decision about whether you want your child’s information to be included in the national reporting or not.
Including every school child who is being provided with an adjustment because of disability in this new national data collection each year will help schools, education authorities and governments to better meet students’ needs.
Your school will tell you what you need to do if you don’t want to have your child’s information included in the national data collection.
Even if your child’s information is not included in the national data collection, your school is still required to provide support to your child with disability and any adjustments that may be needed to help him/her participate at school.

The Athlete’s Foot- Back to School Program We would sincerely like to thank The Athlete’s Foot who has donated $90.00 to our College from their ‘Back-to-School’ program. The College receives $5.00 for every pair of shoes purchases. 2014 Cross Country Report On Tuesday, under clear skies, the SJRC Cross Country was run in and around the school grounds. It was a little wet under foot but generally pretty good going. Congratulations to our age champions and runners up. Full results are listed on the previous page. Students who are shaded yellow have qualified for the Diocesan Carnival to be held at Grafton on the 22nd May. A permission form will be emailed to parents shortly.
