Dear families,

SundaySundaySundaySunday “Suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a violent wind . . . it filled the whole house. And there ap-

peared to them parted tongues as of fire, which settled upon each of them. And they were all filled with the

Holy Spirit" (Epistle). On Christmas we celebrate the birthday of Christ in His Physical Body. This Sunday, June 4th, we celebrate

Pentecost Sunday. It is recognised as the birthday of the Church, of all those who have been reborn into His

Mystical Body. Pentecost (Whitsunday), ranks among the great feasts of Christianity. It commemorates not only the descent

of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and Disciples, but also the fruits and effects of that event: the completion

of the work of redemption, the fullness of grace for the Church and its children, and the gift of faith for all

nations.

During this week we pray for both the Parker family and also the Miron family on their recent losses. Graeme Parker, husband to Margaret and Father to Adam (Yr 2) and Matthew (Yr 5) passed away last week. Anna Armour’s mother (mother to Zali and Lily, and wife to Bernard Miron) also passed away on the week-

end. Please contact the school for any offers of support to both families during this difficult time. Please

note the Graeme Parker’s funeral service is this Saturday at 11.00am and Anna’s mother’s service is this

Friday at 1.30pm.

Professional Learning Last week members of our leadership team attended an ACER Conference titled, ‘Excellence in Professional Practice.’ It was an excellent professional learning forum with valuable insights into current themes and trends in education. It

is also provided us with affirmation in regard to the directions and intentions of our annual improvement plan.

Stephen Dinham was the keynote speaker for the conference. Stephen is Associate Dean (Strategic Partnerships) and Professor of Instructional Leadership in the Melbourne Graduate School of Education, University of Melbourne, a position he has held since the beginning of 2011. He has taught in government secondary schools and been appointed to a range of senior academic leadership roles in many universities in New South Wales, working variously in the areas of curriculum studies, teacher education, pedagogy, professional development and educational leadership at the University of Western Sydney, University of New England and the University of Wollongong. Stephen was also a re-

search director at the Australian Council for Educational Research.

Stephen has conducted a wide range of research projects, in the areas of educational leadership and change, effective pedagogy/quality teaching, student achievement, professional teaching standards and teachers' professional develop-

ment.

Catholic Education has its roots and directions centred directly in our Faith and Catholic Identity; helping the Church to achieve Her Mission. Quality teaching, quality learning and improving student learning outcomes are an essential part to our work amid a Catholic culture. Stephen Dinham believes leadership is increasingly recognised internationally as a vital factor in helping improve school effectiveness, teacher quality and student achievement. There has been greater attention paid to formulating professional standards, models, profiles and frameworks for school leadership, both to articulate the breadth and depth of leaders’ roles and to inform professional learning, se-lection, appraisal and accountability processes. Included in this is the notion of Distributed Leadership! Alongside this, there has also been a greater recognition that teachers exercise leadership. As teachers experience develops, it is more likely and expected their involvement and influence will increase and move beyond the classroom, across the

school and more widely into the profession.

As a leadership team we will continue to explore a variety of ways we can build leadership, improve teacher effec-

tiveness and enhance student learning and outcomes.

Pilgrimage Mass Next week all of the students in year five will be attending a Pilgrimage Mass to be held in Sale on 7th June starting at 11.00am. The Mass will be celebrated by Bishop O’Regan. The Mass is aimed at the students who will be making their Confirmation in 2018. These Masses are called Pilgrimage Masses to emphasise the spiritual journeying towards full initiation through the Sacrament of Confirmation. After each Mass, there will be an opportunity for students to

have a brief tour of the Cathedral led by the Bishop and priests of the Cathedral Parish.

A permission note for this event will be sent home shortly.

Reminder - Lunch Orders This Friday 2nd June is the final day for lunch orders from the Burke Street Milkbar. We are cur-rently looking at several options for an alternative provider and a procedure to facilitate this pro-cess. In the meantime, after this Friday 2nd June, there will be a period where there will be no lunch orders until we have an alternative option in place. We hope you will understand the situation and any inconvenience it may cause.

Reports and Parent/Teacher/Child meetings A reminder that half yearly school reports will be issued on Monday 26th June. The written reports form one part of the reporting process regarding your child’s strengths, areas of improvement and ways that we (staff, parents and students) can work together. Reporting is formative in its nature and explores ways that the school, in partnership

with the students and parents, can develop ways to improve each child’s learning.

Parent-teacher-child meetings, Tuesday 27th June, are another form of reporting and an excellent opportunity for parents, teachers and students to meet. By asking questions and gathering more detail about the information provid-ed on the student report card, you have an opportunity to become more involved in your child's learning and pro-

vide support where needed.

We acknowledge that working in partnership is vital in helping students to succeed, but students too have a major role to play in their own learning. The provision of relevant feedback to the students on their learning is an im-portant component in personal growth and improvement. It is expected that all parents attend these meetings, un-less you have had previous discussions with your child’s teacher and feel that attendance is not necessary. If in doubt

ask your teacher!

Grade 6 Families Reminder to Grade 6 families that applications to enrol at Marist Sion College close tomorrow Thursday 1st June.

Gospel Value Gospel Value Gospel Value Gospel Value –––– JusticeJusticeJusticeJustice Justice is how we treat others and how we would like them to treat us. Justice is also about what is right and, doing the right thing at all times. To live well, and honorably, and justly are the same thing.

Caring Habits Caring Habits Caring Habits Caring Habits –––– RespectingRespectingRespectingRespecting Respect is where we show that other people’s feelings, issues and rights are important to us and we will consider them when being with them. Respect is something that we show to others, especially those who love, help and support us.

BehaviourBehaviourBehaviourBehaviour According to psychologists, all behaviour has four components: 1. acting 2. thinking 3. feeling 4. physiology When we change any one component of behavior, the other components change as well. The two easiest components to control directly are acting and thinking. It is virtually impossible to change your feelings or physiology directly. When we act out of our comfort zone, our behaviour may start to change. Also when we change our thinking we are again out of our comfort zone and our behav-iours may change. If you can identify people who are being forced for whatever reason to act out of their comfort zone, it is then that different behaviours are more noticeable. Not just in other people, but also our own behaviour.

Last Thursday, the grade 5/6 classes held an expo to showcase their work on biomes. It was a won-

derful opportunity not only for the students to see the range of projects from their classmates, but

also for parents and guests to see the learning that has taken place during the first half of this term.

The students appreciated the number of parents that attended and were enthusiastic in responding to

questions about their work.

Italian Day Italian Day Italian Day Italian Day ---- Melinda Mulqueen Melinda Mulqueen Melinda Mulqueen Melinda Mulqueen

Our annual Italian Day is on Friday 23rd June, only three weeks away. For those new to the school, the children will spend the day in multiage groups and rotate around six different activities. The children are invited to come to school dressed up with an Italian theme, such as, a famous Italian person, the colours of the flag, a tourist, an Italian sports person, Pi-nocchio or an Italian landmark. This year our theme is "Celebrating Puglia", which is a region of Italy. Many of our activities will focus around this theme.

Our day will once again start with a short assembly featuring a costume parade and the chil-dren will sing some of the songs we have learnt in our Italian classes. Families are welcome to join our assembly.
