Children benefit from being released fromthe pressure of always having to do well. When children learn that mistakes arequite acceptable they are more likely tostretch themselves and try new areas ofendeavour or use their own initiative andnot worry if they mess up.

Help perfectionists understand that theydon’t have to do everything perfectly.Sometimes near enough is good enough, particularly if you are trying newendeavours. Learning to spell, writing astory or playing a game all have healthymargins for error. The trouble with somechildren is that they believe that they onlycount in the eyes of others when they areperfect, look perfect or can do the perfectjob. These people need to learn that doinga good enough job is acceptable much ofthe time.

Sheet Ten

Teach your child to aim for

excellence not perfection.

Excellence has room for errors but

perfection has too many strings

attached. Focus on the process of

what children do rather than focus

on the results. This helps release the

pressure on perfectionists to

perform to their best all the time.

Vitamins for parents

Celebrate mistakesChildren who are perfectionists needloosening up so that they can lightenloosening up so that they can lightenup, stretch themselves and take a fewup, stretch themselves and take a fewrisks. As first borns tend to take theirrisks. As first borns tend to take theirbehavioural cues from their parents, itreally helps if you can drop yourreally helps if you can drop yourguard and make a few mistakes. Weara funny hat occasionally, drop a platewhile emptying the dishwasher, letthe sink overflow, forget to put petrolin the car, leave your clothes lyingaround the house or whatever it takesto show that you mess up too.Sometimes kids see adults as these bigpeople who know it all and who nevermake mistakes!

Bright idea

“Aim for success, not perfection.

Never give up your right to be

wrong, because then you will lose

the ability to learn new things and

move forward with your life.”

Dr. David M. Burns

“When I approach a child he

inspires in me two sentiments:

tenderness for what he is; and

respect for what he may become.”

YEAR 5 cAmP Victor Harbor Wow, what fantastic weather we had for camp this year, the Yr 5’s had a total blast on camp this year. Victor is such a pretty place to visit and our accommodation (Toc H) which is on the outskirts of town has a great view of the ocean. The students were kept very busy and participated in many activities. This included a trip to the Whale centre where students learnt many interesting facts about whales, their habitat, hunting techniques and their migration patterns. The class visited Urrimbirra Wildlife Park where we strolled amongst the kangaroos, patted the koalas and got up close and personal with crocodiles. Urrimbirra has over 400 Australian native animals, including Wallabies, Red-bellied Pademelon, Echidnas, Dingos, Lizard, Snakes, Pythons and hundreds of birds throughout six hectares of wetland bird sanctuary. It was great fun and is definitely worth a visit. As Greenhills Adventure Park is now closed we decided to visit Woodhouse activity centre in the Adelaide Hills. This was a great choice as the students got to burn plenty of energy on challenge hill and even more playing laser skirmish. The class took the opportunity to have a relaxing swim at Horse shoe bay on Thursday, climb the Bluff, walk around Granite Island and lastly visit the famous lolly shop in the main street. As teachers, we believe camps are very beneficial they provide a unique environment where students can socialise, learn and broaden their experiences outside of the classroom. This camp was a pleasure to be a part of and the students displayed a lot of maturity throughout the whole camp. Well done Yr. 5 students!A special thank you to Anita Fogden and Lachie Brereton who so kindly offered their time to support the teachers on this camp.

YEAR 6 cAmP

From the 26th to the 28th of October, St Joseph’s Year 6 class headed to Port Vincent for their aquatics camp. Despite experiencing miserable weather leading up to camp, we were blessed with sunny, warm conditions over the two days. The children were able to participate in windsurfing, kayaking, sailing and knee-boarding, and a highlight was being asked to be at the beach bright and early to participate in the weather segment for the Today show on Channel 9.

We all had a fantastic time!
