SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY

FRIDAY 6 MAY

Dear Parents As advised in the note sent home on Monday, our School Cross Country will now be held this Friday the 6th May at the Sporting Complex. The students will be leaving school at 9:00am, travelling by bus out to the Sporting complex. Once there, they will walk the track and our first event will commence at 10:00am. Students should wear full sports uniform, including a hat and bring plenty of water. If any parents are available to help out on the day, your support would be most welcome. Diocesan Cross Country will be held on Monday 16 May 2016 in Quirindi. Medals for our winners and runners-up will be handed out the following Friday at assembly. Naplan Next week our Year 3 and 5 students will complete their NAPLAN tests on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. It is important that all students attend each of the test days if possible as they provide valuable information to assist in future learning. To assist your child, please ensure they get a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast and try not to worry about the testing process. Happy Mothers Day When you become a mother you realise why no one has ever printed out a job description for this very important role - it’s endless! Suddenly you find yourself using skills that you never even realised you possessed and finally you find the truth in the old saying ’A mothers work is never done’. But while the work can be tough, the rewards are never ending. This Sunday we wish you all a very Happy Mothers Day, we hope you are able to relax, enjoy and create more precious memories with your beautiful families. Judy Elks

A Prayer for all Mothers

We thank you, Lord, that you fill a mother’s heart with love,

That you have instilled in her very being the need to protect her children

if at all possible.

Thank you for giving her the gift of nurturing her children, of teaching

them, of comforting them, of feeding them and making a safe place for

them,

For guiding them to be all that God has created them to be.

Fill every mother with love, wisdom and endurance,

with strength and patience and joy.

Give her the ability to forgive again and again.

Enable her to rely on You and call upon You,

because You will give her all she needs.

In Your precious and all powerful name, Amen.

SCHOOL MASS There will be NO school Mass this Friday due to the school cross country event.

ASSEMBLY

Our next assembly will be held this Friday 6 May in the School Hall at 2:45pm. All welcome.

LIBRARY NEWS

Reading for Purpose

Library is an important component of our curriculum. It enables our students to put into practice the skill of

reading in an enjoyable way. Other ways for you to support your child to develop this skill is to encourage

your child to read more and give them the opportunity to read for a purpose.

For example:

Get them to help read the recipe book when you are making dinner or a cake.

Show them the instructions from a new appliance.

Get them to read to a younger sibling or cousin.

Ask them to investigate something on the computer and read about it.

Children need to learn that reading is not just looking at pictures and stories, but is a much used skill that

we tend to take for granted once we can do it.

selected to represent St Joseph’s at the Diocesan Cross Country to be held in Quirindi on Monday 16

May. Further information will be provided.

Diocesan schools for the Diocesan Gala Day to be held in Tamworth on Monday 23 May. Places will

TERM 2 SCHOOL FEES

home with the eldest child. Term 2 invoices and statements were sent home in envelopes yesterday. If you

have not yet received your invoice please check your child’s bag or phone the office so that we can re-

issue it. Thank you.

HEAD LICE

There has been a case of head lice in the school. This is unavoidable in any community where large

groups are in close proximity such as in schools. Parents are advised to check their children’s hair

regularly for signs of lice and eggs (nits). Please see your chemist for the best advice regarding

treatment. It is important to wash all bed linen and clothing worn by the child if affected. It is also

important that girls’ hair (if longer than the collar) is tied back when at school. We appreciate your co-

operation in this matter.

SCHOOL BOARD

Expressions of interest are invited to fill a vacancy on the School Board. If you are interested and would

like to know more about the role of a board member please contact Judy Elks.

The next ordinary meeting and AGM of the Board will take place on Monday 9 May at 6:30pm.

CHURCH JUBILEE

St Joseph’s Parish will be celebrating the Golden Jubilee of our parish church in May next year.

If you are interested in being involved in the organisation and planning please contact Trish Shortis on

0402 342 032.

PROJECT COMPASSION THANK YOU

Thank you to our families who donated to Caritas through the Project Compassion boxes before Easter.

We were able to send off a cheque for $128.95 to help Caritas in their work to provide vital learning and

renewed hope to children, women and men most vulnerable to extreme poverty and injustice. Your

generosity is a display of compassion in action and makes a life-changing difference.

PARENT VOLUNTEER CHECKS

This is just a reminder to all our canteen helpers that we would appreciate you sending in your

completed Working With Children Declaration forms as soon as possible. If you have any questions or

need any assistance please contact the school office.
