One of the first aspects of the Holy Spirit is that the Spirit rests upon us, dwells with us, protects us and cares for us. This is so important, because while there are many people and things that pull us away from God, the Holy Spirit cares for us, pro- tects us and encourages us to go on. Second, the Spirit of God conse- crates us. This is what we truly celebrate in the Acts of the Apostles. The Holy Spirit descended on the disciples who were plagued with shyness, sadness, insecurity and confusion. So to does the Holy Spirit descend on us consecrating us in order that our imperfections or bad habits do not overtake us. Third, the Spirit of God bids us to go forth to proclaim his peace, his joy. We can’t just hold on to all the Holy Spirit gives us. We are called to use, to share, to freely give that which we have been gener- ously given. Yes, we celebrate that the Holy Spirit rests upon us, conse- crates us and sends us forth. As Easter People we are called not to be locked up in our own inner homes of pain, hurt, resentfulness or unfor- giveness. We are called to open our hearts to the Holy Spirit who rests, consecrates and sends us forth to proclaim his peace, his joy.

“The Spirit of God Rests Upon Me,

The Spirit of God Consecrates Me,

The Spirit of God Bids Me Go Forth to Proclaim His Peace, His Joy”

These are the words to an old hymn that I used to hear as a child. In these few words, we find the heart of what Pentecost Sunday is all about. First, the Spirit of God rests upon us. One of the first aspects of the Holy Spirit is that the Spirit rests upon us, dwells with us, protects us and cares for us. This is so important, because while there are many people and things that pull us away from God, the Holy Spirit cares for us, pro-tects us and encourages us to go on. Second, the Spirit of God conse-crates us. We are called to use, to share, to freely give that which we have been gener-ously given. Yes, we celebrate that the Holy Spirit rests upon us, conse-crates us and sends us forth. As Easter People we are called not to be locked up in our own inner homes of pain, hurt, resentfulness or unfor-giveness. We are called to open our hearts to the Holy Spirit who rests, consecrates and sends us forth to proclaim his peace, his joy.

Stewardship Thought One miracle of Pentecost was that, despite their diversity,

each listener heard God’s word in his or her own language. The meaning for stewardship is that, by sharing the gifts

poured out on us by the Holy Spirit, we will be empowered

to meet the needs of our brothers and sisters, whatever they may be.

Please remember in your daily prayers the sick and suffer-ing of our parish family.

Jubilee Year of Mercy

May 15, 2016

Solemnity of Pentecost

Announcing the Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis challenged us to proclaim God’s mer-

cy “to everyone without exception . . . again and again, with new

enthusiasm and renewed pastoral ac-

tion” (Misericordiae Vultus, 12). Pentecost proclaims that the door locked for fifty days

is thrown open at last. No longer closed in on itself, the com-munity speaks to crowds from different backgrounds, distant

lands, exotic languages. Everyone hears their native lan-guage. The Spirit does not restore Babel’s uniformity, but

forges unity-in-diversity of language, race, nationality—

embracing all without exception. During this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pentecost’s Spirit summons us afresh from mediocrity

and isolation to share God’s mercy with the world. “This is our mission!” Francis exclaims. We are “given the gift of the

‘tongue’ of the Gospel and the ‘fire’ of the Holy Spirit, so that

while we proclaim Jesus risen, living and present in our midst, we may warm . . .the heart of the peoples, drawing

near to Him, the way, the truth, and the life” (Regina Coeli address, Pentecost Sunday, May 24, 2015).
