Collection Feb. 17-18 for the Church in Latin America and Eastern Europe Envelopes are in the pews and at the exits

This year’s campaign highlights the faith of Latin America and the many opportunities we have to share faith with them. We also recognize the tremendous benefit of having our Latin American brothers and sisters in the Church and the revitalization their fervor brings to our faith. In addition to offering our help and support, we have much to learn from them.

The countries in Eastern Europe have faced many years of hardship. They have been op-pressed by czars, radical communism, horrendous crimes against humanity, and revolutionary, civil, and world wars. Under communism, organized religion was opposed in favor of atheism to overthrow the power of the Russian Orthodox Church. Since the collapse of the former Soviet Union in 1991, Eastern European countries have been working to rebuild political structures, social welfare, and their economies. Funds from this collection will help to build the pastoral capacity of the Church and to rebuild and restore the faith in these countries.

Attention Lectors and Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion The next scheduling calendar will be from March 5 to May 7, 2018. Please

put in your request for this upcoming schedule by Wednesday, February 21st in the Scheduling Website or email your request to [email protected] . You can also call the parish office and leave a message for Amalia.

“We Are One” - Thank you to the 281 fami-lies who have already pledged to support the mis-sion of the Church to teach, preach, minister and serve in the name of Jesus through their financial contribution to the 2018 Pastoral Services Appeal. These families have pledged $62,995.50, with $18,433 being already paid. If you have not yet made your pledge, you may still do so.

CHRISTIAN LIFE PROGRAM The Christian Life Program is a journey in rediscovering God’s love by reflecting on

the Basic Truths about the Catholic Christian Faith. Learn about a Spirit-filled Christian Life from our presenters, the Couples for Christ Family Ministries.

Becoming a disciple of Jesus means accepting the invitation to belong to God’s fam-ily and to live in conformity with His way of life: “For whoever does the will of my Fa-ther in heaven is my brother, and sister, and mother.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, CCC2233)

The CHRISTIAN LIFE PROGRAM is open to all married couples, single men and women, widows, widowers, divorced and single parents. Kids watch is available.

DATE: Saturdays, from Feb. 24 through May 5 ( no meeting March 31), from 7-9:30 p.m. in the SRE room.

For information call Pete at 714-307-4848, Ed at 714-270-5762, or Lita at 714-423-3355.

An Introduction to the Spiritual Life: Three Ways of Praying

For this Lent we will explore together what exactly is the spiritual life ac-cording to our rich Catholic tradition. We will especially learn how to pray the scriptures (Lectio divina), the psalms, and the Jesus Prayer which is also known as the Prayer of the Heart.

This will be presented over a 3 week period by Fr. John Monestero on Thurs-days, February 22, March 1, and March 8, from 7-9 p.m. in the youth room.

TODAY'S READINGS First Reading — God's covenant with Noah when he was

delivered from the flood (Genesis 9:8-15). Psalm -- Your ways, O Lord, are love and truth to those

who keep your covenant (Psalm 25). Second Reading -- The water of the flood prefigured

baptism, which saves you now (1 Peter 3:18-22). Gospel -- This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of

God is at hand (Mark 1:12-15). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass (c) 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved.

St. Justin Martyr Church February 18, 2018

PEOPLE OF THE COVENANT If there is one word that stands out in today's read-

ings, it is "covenant." God's faithfulness and goodness serve as examples to us of how to live. Genesis tells the story of Noah and of God's covenant not only with all people, but with all of nature. Never will the cleansing waters of the flood bring their destructive power to all the earth again. The sign, the reminder to both God and nature, is the rainbow in the heavens.

The psalm reminds us of this compassion of God, and begs God to remember us, not because of our goodness, but because of God's goodness and fidelity to the promise. God shows us how to be good, not by de-cree, but by example. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Brotherhood of St. Dismas The Brotherhood of St. Dismas invites men 17 years

and older to join us on Monday nights at 7:30 p.m. in the St. Justin chapel (in the Parish Center). Our aim is to grow men’s spirituality and understanding of scripture and doc-trine. Contact John Martinez at 714-307-2314 for ques-tions.

We Pray for the Deceased Please pray for these members of our

parish family who passed away recently: Jose Mendoza, Frank Meraz, Vicky Victoria.

May their souls and all the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace.

This week’s funeral: The funeral for Frank Meraz will be Thursday, Febru-

ary 22, at 10 a.m. at St. Justin.

Alpha Course Tuesdays, from 7-9 p.m. in the Parish Center.

Join as fellow parishioners discuss life, faith, and God -Feb. 20 - Why and How Do I Read the Bible?

-Feb. 27 - Who is the Holy Spirit and What does He Do?

-March 6- How Can I Resist Evil?

-March 13 - Does God Heal Today?

-March 20 - What About Church and Telling Others? You are welcome to attend any of the sessions

What is Alpha? The Alpha Course aims to explore the Christian faith, each week exploring a different question. It is fun, relaxed, totally no pressure--that is probably why over 19 million people around the world have already done it. You will listen, learn, discuss, and discover more about the big questions. How does it work? Each Alpha course session begins with a coffee break, followed by a short talk, looking at a different aspect of the Christian faith. After that, there is a time for discussion in a friendly small group. What is the cost? There is no charge, although you may snacks or drinks. Who is Alpha for? Alpha is for everyone. We especially encourage those who come to church and find it boring, a custom or tradition. Those wanting to investi-gate Christianity. Those who are new to our parish and would like to have sup-port. Those who want to build a stronger community and get to know others. Those who want to get involved in ministry but are unsure where to start. Registration: You do not need to register, but we do encourage it. To register please call the Faith Formation Office at 714-535-6111.

St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Justin Martyr Church in conjunction with the USDA is now providing food distribution every fourth Saturday monthly for those with low income (we will not verify).

The next food distribution will be at the tables under our shelter from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on February 24.

There are no boundary requirements. ID is not required. Bring bags, boxes, or carts to carry your food away!

St. Justin Lenten Dinners Soup Suppers on the Fridays of Lent, from 7-8:30 p.m.

As part of our Lenten tradition of the three practices of fasting, prayer and almsgiving, you are invited fast and pray for a particular charity every Friday in Lent and the break the fast with a simple soup dinner at the parish. This gives us an opportunity to join together for the devotion of the Stations of the Cross at 6 p.m., then share a meal and donate to a particular charity of the week.

The dinners will be served under the shelter, and will be provided and served by different parish groups each week. Donations received from the dinners will be designated for a different charity each week.

--Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copy-right (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

REFLEXIONES SOBRE LA PALABRA Cruzar nuestros desiertos
