Always Be Prepared When our house was being constructed, many years ago in Nigeria, we the six boys were charged with the responsibility of fetching the water for the workers to mold the blocks and prepare cement mortar for plastering the wall. Each of us had a drum he was supposed to fill to the brim with water before day break, so the work could go uninterrupted. We had containers given to us according to our size and strength. I think mine was five liters and my elder brothers had 20, 15 and 10 accordingly. So each day, when the sun went down and the workers had gone, we were expected to start fetching to fill our drums with water. Sometimes my senior brother William would prefer to start his fetching early in the morning at 5am. The workers normally started working by 7am. Out of fear of our father’s rage should anybody fail to fill his drum, we did the fetching at night. On one fateful day, William overslept. He woke up with the noise and rambling of the workers. My father was very upset that his drum was empty. William hurriedly picked up his container and ran down to the stream to fetch
the water. In the quest to be fast enough to avert my father’s punishment he fell down and the container broke and the water spilled. He ran back to the house to grab my brother’s jug, but nobody offered him theirs except me, my paltry 5 liter pitcher. To fill up a drum of 80 liters with a small jug of five liters meant going down to the stream 16 times in a day. My father was supervising the workers but kept repeating these words “You must be prepared always because you do not know the hour.” We do not know the meaning at the time, but I believe William knew. He was still fetching the water when the workers finished their day’s job and he was very tired and hungry. Afterwards, we kept saying to him the words of our father, “You must be prepared always because you do not know the hour.” Today I will say same thing to all of us, “Let us be prepared always.”

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION When Pope Pius XII died in 1958, there was the usual buzz of speculation about likely successors. Cardinal Agajanian, Patriarch of the Armenians, was highly thought of as a likely choice. This took many Catholics by surprise, since he had never celebrated the same liturgy as Pope Pius, but followed ancient Armenian customs according to the Eastern Church, which veils the Eucharisic liturgy from sight by a series of curtains, and in which the priest kneels while the people stand for Communion. In the years that followed, the Second Vatican Council would affirm the dignity and independence of the Eastern Churches, in complete union with Rome, yet different in patterns of life and worship. We have the same faith, the same sacraments, and the same pope. Yet everywhere in the world our separate Churches are combined into families held together by the ministry of bishops. All of this serves as warning: If you ever say, “But we’ve always done it this way,” you are on very thin ice indeed!

STAND AND BE COUNTED
Registering in a parish is a declaration of your desire to be
part of a Catholic community and a commitment in all its dimensions brings you
advantages, recognition, and responsibilities of many kinds. Being a registered parishioner
makes things much easier when it is time for infant Baptism,
weddings, when asked to be a Baptismal or Confirmation Sponsor and even funerals.
We are often asked to provide affidavits for Baptismal and
Confirmation Sponsors. We can only do this if a person is a
registered, active and contributing member.
So, are you a registered parishioner?
If not, please consider registering. Registration forms are available in
the Parish Ministry Center or online at www.st-justin.org

Statement from Bishop Oscar Cantú and the Diocese of San Jose
regarding the deadly violence in
El Paso and Dayton From the community still wounded from a mass shooting just a week ago in Gilroy, we send our prayers and heartfelt concerns to the people of El Paso and Dayton, and all those affected by the recent shootings that have left 29 people dead and many wounded. We grieve with the families of the deceased and pray for the recovery of the wounded and injured.
We think of those who harbor hatred and fear in their minds and hearts: we remind them that it is unacceptable to take out their frustrations on the innocent. All human persons are created in God’s image and likeness and, as the Declaration of Independence affirms, possess inalienable rights to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”
Moreover, we are reminded that each of us in the human family bears a responsibility for each
other: for brother, sister, neighbor. Thus, it is important that we realize the impact that language and attitudes of racism, discrimination, and hatred can have on others. We also encourage each other to report to proper authorities any warning signs we notice in others that reveal hatred and a willingness to hurt others or themselves.
Finally, we stand in solidarity with Cardinal Daniel DiNardo and Bishop Frank Dewane in their statement on behalf of the US bishops: “The plague that gun violence has become continues unchecked and spreads across our country. Things must change. Once again, we call for effective legislation that addresses why these unimaginable and repeated occurrences of murderous gun violence continue to take place in our communities.”
May the God of peace bring comfort to the families of the deceased and healing to the wounded and injured. May we all heed the words of Jesus, “love one another.”
