We believe that someone can be cured, but we also believe the grace given in the sacrament prepares us for any challenges that may come due to illness. Sickness and death will not conquer the Christian. In Christ we have new life. So we invite those who are in need of the sacrament to please come forward during the liturgies. The second event for your calendar is the “Trunk or Treat”. There will be trick or treating in the parking lot beginning at 5:00 PM. After an hour of trick or treating the fun continues in Crawford Hall until 9:00 PM. Families are invited to decorate their trunks for the event. Check out this bulletin for more information. Finally, we are going to be getting a new roof and gutters for the rectory and offices. There are presently two roofs on the house and they are in bad shape and the plywood decking is rotting in a few spots. The house is also settling which is causing the gutters to leak and back up. We have saved money for projects like this so we will not have to ask you or the archdiocese for money at this time. But if you would like to donate to this project your help is always appreciated.

Notes from Fr. John St. Kieran Parish

Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 11, 2015

The word of God is living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword.

— Hebrews 4:12a

Today we celebrate the Twenty- Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time. In the first reading the writer prays for wisdom. He sees it as more important than anything else he might receive from God. He saw it as a treasure that will never fade. This is contrasted with the story in the Gospel. At a first look the young man who comes to Jesus seems to be on the right track. He follows the commandments and he honors his parents. Jesus tells him there is one more thing to do, and that is giving up his riches and take care of the poor. The man walks away sad, because he has many possessions. We believe that things can bring us happiness, but Jesus says those same things can be a curse. We pray for the wisdom to know what is important in our lives, and then to devote our time and energy to those things. There are a few upcoming events you will want to put on your calendar for the end of the month. On the weekend of October 24th and 25th we will be celebrating the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick at all of the weekend masses. The sacrament is seen as a sacrament of healing both physically, mentally and spiritually.

Dear Friends, Our Pet Supply Drive was a great success. Thank you to all who donated supplies. Thanks also to our Confirmation Candidates who helped to organize the items, to Dawn Sterning for her leadership of the students, and to Joanne Karwowski for scheduling the pick-up of items as well as helping to load the South Suburban Humane Society truck. The folks at the SSHS were extremely grateful for the much needed pet supplies. Look for pictures from the drive in this bulletin. Our next service project will be a Birthday Bags in November. Students will be asked to bring a birthday gift bag filled with a cake mix, frosting, birthday candles, and cake decorations or candies. These bags will be donated to the Catholic Charities Food Pantry at St. Irenaeus so that children in need will be assured of a special treat on their birthday. Parishioners are welcome to participate. More details will be available later this month.

God bless you,

Teri Klopp

What’s Wrong with the St. Kieran Sign?

We did not think anyone was looking at the Halsted Street sign! So, we purposely misspelled one of the words on last week’s sign. We were amazed at the number of telephone calls that we received because “Coffee” was misspelled! Because of your response we will continue to put up messages every week.

Thanks for checking out the sign!

Next weekend our parish will celebrate World Mission Sunday. We are invited to reach out and help build the Church in the most remote areas across our world. Through the work of these churches, and their witness to Christ, the poor receive practical help and experience God’s love and mercy, His hope and peace. Please keep the Missions in your prayers and come prepared next weekend to give generously in the collection for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith.

For more information, please visit

Does your child like to sing?

The St. Kieran Children’s Choir is ready to begin again and is looking for new members. If your child is in 2nd grade or is older and would like to join, please contact the Choir Director, Joanne Rossbach, before or after a weekend Mass or call the rectory office and leave the students' names, grades, and parents phone number.

We would sing a Saturday evening Mass every other month (October, February, and April) and at the 10:00 am Christmas Day Mass. Practices will be on Saturdays from 3:00-4:00 pm.

Sing along with the St. Kieran Children Choir!

Holy Father’s Prayer Intentions for October 2015

General Intention: Human Trafficking That human trafficking, the modern form of slavery, may be eradicated. Missionary Intention: Mission in Asia That with a mission spirit the Christian communities of Asia may announce the Gospel to those who are still awaiting it.

Did You Know… A friendly group of men and women meet weekly here at St. Kieran to study and discuss the scripture readings for the upcoming Sunday Mass. We use good study resources from wonderful Catholic homilists and teachers. We find that our understanding of the Liturgy of the Word is greatly enhanced through this study.

Please join us any Thursday from 12:30 until 2:00, St. Kieran School library meeting room, to see if this is a good fit for you. A Sunday Missal will be provided.

The St. Kieran’s Women’s Club Fall Bake Sale will take place next week, October 17 & 18, at all masses in the church vestibule. All bakers, please drop off your baked goods in the church vestibule before masses that weekend. Shoppers, plan to arrive early to get your favorites!

ST. KIERAN CARES

St. Kieran Cares assists our own parishioners in temporary need of food and living expenses. If you can use our help, call the Rectory Office or the Religious Education Office. Personal information will be kept confidential. You can donate to St. Kieran Cares by using our new Outreach Envelope and choosing “St. Kieran Cares” on the envelope. Make checks payable to St. Kieran Church.

THE WOMEN’S

CENTER The Women’s Center (a Catholic-based organization helping women in crisis pregnancies while offering life-affirming alternatives to abortion) needs YOU! Are you a college student, retired adult, or servant-hearted person with M-F 9am-5pm availability, looking to build your resume or lend a hand? Starting at the end of October onwards, your help is needed to prepare bottles (clean, tag, and box them) for our next Baby Bottle Campaign so they can be sent to churches and schools. Or make a day of it: clean bottles 9am-12noon, attend Mass in our chapel at noon, eat lunch, then help till 4-5pm. Please let me know if you are interested in helping. Reach out to Paige at [email protected] or 773.794.8807 for more details or to learn of other volunteer opportunities at The Women’s Center.
