TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The man said, “This one is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; this one shall be called ‘woman’ ” (Genesis 2:18-24). Psalm — May the Lord bless us all the days of our lives (Psalm 128). Second Reading — He who consecrates and those who are being consecrated all have one origin (Hebrews 2:9-11). Gospel — Whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it (Mark 10:2-16 [2-12]). John Today we celebrate the Twenty- Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time. The readings today speak about partnering and specifically about marriage. God does not want us to be alone and so he creates woman. Marriage was and continues to be the bedrock of civilization. The family is the first Church where faith is formed and truth is taught. As we struggle as a nation on what constitutes a marriage, the readings today tell us a good marriage will be a partnership. We all also are called to partner with Jesus in bringing about the kingdom. The marriage between God and us is not dissolvable. In this bulletin you will see a letter from Archbishop Cupich. The Holy Father’s visit to the United States has been a time of great blessing for our country and for us as Catholics. Archbishop Cupich also sees it as a time to look forward and plan for the future of the Archdiocese. After being Archbishop for about a year, the Archbishop has begun a planning process to strengthen the Church in Chicago. This week the priests of the Archdiocese had preliminary meetings with the Archbishop to begin looking at a framework for the future. More meetings have been set, and the plans will begin to unfold in 2016. This is a time for prayerful contemplation and Archbishop Cupich encourages all of us to use the cross of St. Damiano that St. Francis looked upon before he begin his ministry to the poor and the Church. I encourage everyone to join us in prayer for revitalization for the Body of Christ in Chicago. This weekend we had our blessing for animals in honor of St. Francis. When Pope Francis took St. Francis’ name for his own it showed the thrust of the Holy Fathers mission. He would be one with the poor and disenfranchised and he would work to preserve the gift of creation that God had given to all of us. These were themes we heard from the Holy Father in his homilies during his visit. Though we often associate St. Francis with a love of animals he really had a love for creation in its entirety. He saw the whole world as a gift from God. We pray for that same vision as we celebrate St. Francis’ feast day. Finally, this weekend we begin our annual October Count. The October count is one way in which the Archdiocese looks at the viability of a parish. As we look to planning for the future I encourage everyone to do their best to join us for all of the Sundays of October. We are counting on you! TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading — The man said, “This one is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; this one shall be called ‘woman’ ” (Genesis 2:18-24). Notes from Fr. John

Today we celebrate the Twenty- Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time. This is a time for prayerful contemplation and Archbishop Cupich encourages all of us to use the cross of St. Damiano that St. Francis looked upon before he begin his ministry to the poor and the Church. ST. KIERAN RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PET SUPPLY DRIVE FOR THE

SOUTH SUBURBAN HUMANE SOCIETY THIS WEEKEND

Did you forget your items for donation to the Pet Supply Drive? If so, please call the Religious Education Office at 708/754-0484 to make arrangements to drop them off during the week.

Parish News & Events

Dear Friends, As we begin this first full month of Autumn, our school-year routines are comfortably in order. We blessed our pets this weekend and completed the South Suburban Humane Society Pet Supply Drive (if you forgot to bring your items for donation, bring them to the rectory this week and I will get them to the SSHS). The Women’s Club members (and any other bakers who wish to join us) are checking recipes and taking inventory of baking supplies ahead of the Fall Bake Sale on the weekend of October 17 & 18. Instructions and invitations are being sent out to R.E. families to join their children in an All Saints Liturgy on Wednesday, October 28. Preparations are under way for the Halloween Party on Friday, October 30. Fire drills are on the calendar for R.E. students, furnaces are being cleaned and prepped for the coming winter, and sweaters and jackets are coming out of storage. It all feels warm and cozy, and even a little exciting. But how long has it been since you stepped out of your comfort zone? Have you thought about volunteering your time and talents to a liturgical or service ministry? Perhaps you would like to volunteer, but are not quite comfortable with the idea of reading or singing in front of the congregation. Maybe you are afraid that you are not always cheerful enough to be a greeter, or that you must wear a uniform of sorts to be an usher. Eucharistic minister? How will I know where to stand? Maybe you think the Women’s Club and the Knights of Columbus will demand too much of your time, or that Recycle Rally and Vet Tech just might have some cold, rainy days ahead. Coffee Shop? Oh surely I would just get in the way. The truth of the matter is that all of our parish ministries could use more participants. So think about shedding that comfortable cloak, and put on the mantle of Christ as St. Paul urges us to do. I believe you will find a new sense of comfort.

God bless you,

Teri Klopp
