September 2016 Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, Last year, in speaking to a conference in Rome, Pope Francis reminded the participants that “the vocation to the priesthood is a gift that God gives to some for the good of all.” This weekend as we celebrate and pray for our own seminarians in the Archdiocese of Chicago, I ask you once again for your financial support of them. We currently have sixty-seven seminarians preparing for a life of service as your future pastors. Their motivation and enthusiasm for serving in the Church through a life-long commitment is inspiring to us all, promoting us to offer in return our prayers, fraternal encouragement and financial support. Many of you have personally told me how much you enjoy meeting our seminarians whenever they visit parishes and I know you come away from those experiences with a renewed sense of hope for the future. We in turn as a community need to stand with them during their years of preparation and for this reason I invite you to join with me in making this year’s seminarian collection a great success. Contributions made to this collection alleviate monthly expenses such as tuition and fees ($1,850), room and board ($950), formation programs ($250), and health insurance ($190) for each seminarian and will be used solely for the formation of new priests for the Archdiocese of Chicago. You may make a one-time donation no less than your weekly contribution to your parish, or establish a monthly contribution to the collection. Your gift, whatever the amount, will have a great impact on our seminarians, as they see first-hand your willingness to stand in solidarity with them. During the Renew My Church consultation, one of the top priorities identified was the need to promote vocations to the priesthood. We are doing everything possible in this regard, but I do need your support through prayer and donations to the seminarian collection. Thank you for your commitment to our seminarians. You can rely on me joining you in prayer for them as well as my remembrance of your needs as I thank God for your many gifts. Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Blase J. Cupich Archbishop of Chicago

A Second Collection for the Seminaries will be taken in September on the

9/11 REMEMBERED Fi een years ago, the con nuing TV coverage of the imploding twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York was unbearable for me, as

were accounts of the crashes and destruc on in Washington and the hills of Pennsylvania. The immense devasta on of human life was incomprehensible. Visi ng the site in New York some five years later reopened searing wounds, and overwhelmed me with immense sadness. An incursion on our soil, carefully planned and executed by foreign elements, had sha ered my cherished sense of security, and provoked a frightening sense of God’s absence. How could my Catholic faith tradi on enable me to endure this tragedy? I knew that neither vengeance nor sweeping animosity was an op on for me. You have le us crushed . . . covered us with darkness. We are bowed down to the ground (Psalm 44:20, 26). O L of hosts, restore us; Let your face shine upon us (Psalm 80:4)

The Psalmist cries a lament, expressing the mourning of the Israelite people, the chosen of God, who had regarded themselves as untouchable and above reproach, now hurled into misery. The lament expresses a na on’s agony, dares to complain against their divine protector, may even own some complicity in the misery, and finally pleads with God for deliverance. In the midst of lamen ng, the faith of Israel endured, as must ours. We are as vulnerable as they were to the violence and hatred that seem to encircle us. Our demand for a divine explana on goes unheeded. Yet we have learned of the self-sacrificing heroism of many, witnessing to the finest character of our na on and of our Chris an heritage. Dying for one’s friends is a sacred theme in our story, epitomized in Jesus, our Savior, and extended through centuries in the grandest and noblest acts of men and women in all circumstances. In 2001 we came together as one na on under God, sharing the grief, the disillusionment, and the promise to rebuild. As today we lament our honored dead and wounded, shall we translate such agonizing emo on into a persistent pursuit of worldwide reconcilia on and peace? —Rev. Andrew Nelson, © J. S. Paluch Co.

Parable of the lost coin Luke 15:8-10 (NIV) Suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Doesn’t she light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully un l she finds it? And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’ In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.
