School News - Wendy Kelly

It has been a busy week at St. Laurence with a field trip, the 7th/8th grade dance, Science Fair, St. Pat-rick’s Day, and our St. Joseph’s Table! Our preschool through 5th grade students recently visited SciTech Museum in Aurora as we continue to focus on STEM learning. On March 15th, we hosted the Elgin deanery 7th and 8th graders for our annual St. Patrick’s Day dance. Thank you to our 7th grade parents for working the event and Greg Roerig for volunteering to be our DJ. It was a fun evening for everyone! While we have Knowledge Fair each year, this year was a little bit different. We incorporated our Talent Showcase that typically occurs during Catholic Schools Week. As always, the Knowledge Fair included an exhibition of our Science

Fair Projects. We would like to thank our volunteer judges for taking the time to judge our Science Fair. Even though St. Patrick’s Day fell on a Sunday this year, we celebrated with a themed STEM challenge. Our stu-dents in preschool through 4th grade were divided into teams and completed the challenge to create a rainbow bridge, wind-powered maze and a leprechaun trap. We would also like to thank our 7th and 8th grade families for organizing and providing the food for our St. Joseph’s Table on Tuesday. This has been a tradition for many years and is one way that our 7th and 8th graders commemorate the Solemnity of St. Joseph. Congratulations to our final Trifecta winners of the school year! They are: $100 Chrissy Palewski, $75 Jacek Rodomsky, and $50 Linda Ward. Thank you to everyone who participated! We truly appreciate your support! I hope that everyone in our Parish community has a wonderful week ahead! Enjoy the warmer weath-er! Wendy

The Sacristy windows (Southeast smaller windows) In the original priests’ Sacristy are three windows designed to remind and to inspire the priest in his multiple duties at the Altar and in the parish. In the center window is a Chalice. At the Altar the priest renews the sacrifice offered to God by Our Divine Savior. In the upper section appear a miter and staff, symbols of the episcopal office. The bishop is the highest spiritual authori-ty in the diocese and the principal Shepherd of the Faithful. This win-dow donated by William and Agnes Vaughn. In the window to the left is a book representing the scriptures. This symbolizes the duty of the priest to instruct the faithful. In the upper portion are a sword with armor to signify fortitude in accepting difficul-ties and suffering. An ancient lamp reminds him of prudence in dealing with others as a minister of Christ. This window donated In memory of Dr. and Mrs. John Robert Tobin. In the right window a stole represents the office of the priest and his duty to bless, to preach, to offer and to lead. In the upper portion of the window are scales with the sword of justice signifying that to each must be given what belongs to him. The chain and the flame represent the virtue of tem-perance which dictates self-denial and complete dedication. This win-dow donated by Mr. and Mrs. John Arthur McCartney.

Vocations Corner- Fr. Sean Grismer

Listen This Sunday’s first reading is the encounter between God and Moses. Notice that this wasn’t some happen-chance meeting or a “coincidence.” God knew where Moses was going to be and chose to meet him there. And my guess is that when Moses sees the flaming bush he does not think “oh this is the normal way God shows himself to me.” No in fact it says that Moses says to himself “I must go over to look at this remarkable sight.” So, God intrigued Moses to Him by a healthy curiosity. Then when Mo-ses approaches God, God calls out to him. Moses’ response is simply “Here I am.” It begs the speaker to continue. See how God doesn’t chit-chat with Moses? He gets straight to the point “I have heard the cry of my people and I intend to save them through you.” In other words, I am sending you on mission and this is who you are- my Deliverer. Moses at first objects but to no avail because the Lord keeps reminding him of His desire to save His people. Look when it comes to our calling, God will often cut out the “chit-chat.” He has people to save and He is calling you to partner with Him in that saving work. He speaks past our objections and object we often will, but He deeply wants to work with us so that He can save us and others through us. That is the beauty of God- He shares His redeeming works (yes, one sacrifice) but through His children He brings about the redemp-tive work of Christ. So, continuing in this Lenten season, ask Him “Lord, what would you have me do? Here I am, speak, your servant- is listen-ing.” Then actually listen.
