d i r l e

Jesus to teach them how to pray. Jesus not only tells them what to say, he assures them of his Father’s attentiveness and concern. But before that, we hear Abraham speaking directly to God, appealing on behalf of the faithful ones. As Saint Paul asserts, faith is stronger than death, just as God’s forgiveness is stronger than our sins.

Abraham addresses God quite boldly in the reading from Genesis. So too does the person who wakes up a friend in the middle of the night to ask for bread. Such boldness may make many of us uncomfortable. But note that there is an ameliorating factor in these stories. In both cases, the petitioner is asking for someone else’s benefit, not his own. Abraham makes his plea on behalf of potentially innocent people in Sodom. The disciple asks for a friend who has paid an unex-pected visit. Though there is nothing wrong with peti-tioning God for something for oneself—an egg, our daily bread, forgiveness—both examples of persis-tence in prayer in today’s readings involve selfless petition.

When Abraham bargains with God, it shifts the focus of the story from the sinfulness of the people in Sod-om and Gomorrah to the tension between justice and mercy. How can a loving God be the source of both, especially in a case in which innocents may suffer? By going so far, by lowering the bar for mercy six

successive times, Abraham reveals that God is always willing to show mercy, no matter how few are worthy.

When we are desperate to obtain or achieve some-thing, we persist. Persistence in prayer indicates the importance we place upon what we pray for. In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus prays persistently. From the moment he is baptized to the moment he dies on the cross, Jesus lifts up his voice to his Father.

In today’s passage, it is the fact that he has just finished praying that leads the disci-

ples to ask him to teach them how to pray. Jesus’ persis-tence in prayer, therefore, has led to a prayer we persist

in saying today.

Every time the word “stewardship” is mentioned, we gently slide down in the church pew or become conscious of our wallets? As Catholics we believe in whole life stewardship as Jesus taught. We believe that God doesn’t only want our money, He wants our whole lives. Our approach seeks to equip churches and individuals to understand generosity and stewardship in a whole new way. Most of the traditional stewardship resources seem to focus primarily on finances. While having your finances in order is certainly important, often, the discouraging conclusion is, “We don’t always feel we have enough money to be truly financially generous.” Everyone agrees generosity and stewardship are valuable virtues to practice, but are we truly giving God our first and our finest? In the days of Moses, God laid out an offering model that involved giving Him the choicest of options. He did not ask for the sheep that was sickly, the runt of the litter, or the animal that would place 2nd in a livestock compe-tition. He asked for the FIRST and FINEST of what the people had to offer. Today we are called to give God our best, not because He needs our gift. God doesn’t. We are called to give for 2 reasons—-1) He is worthy of our gift, and 2) It is a tangible way that we put Him first in our lives. It is easy to give what we don’t want, but such gifts cost us little. A gift that honors God is one that requires sacrifice, because that is the gift that reflects our hearts. As we grow in our understand-ing of grace, we also grow in our desire to generously show grace to others. Therefore, while the heart transformation we are praying for is not something we can promise to deliver today; we can be confident that one day soon, we can reach our stewardship goals because we have been touched by the Holy Spirit. At St. Lawrence we are proud of creating a culture growing in generosity, rooted in faith.
