Feast of the Nativity of our Lord Feast of the Nativity of our Lord Feast of the Nativity of our Lord Feast of the Nativity of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christand Savior, Jesus Christand Savior, Jesus Christand Savior, Jesus Christ

January 7January 7January 7January 7 IntroductionIntroductionIntroductionIntroduction The Feast of the Nativity of Jesus is one of the

most joyful days of the Orthodox Church. It

ranks next to the greatest holiday, the

Resurrection of Jesus. The Feast of the Birth of

Jesus is also known as the “Incarnation of

Christ.” This means that Jesus became a man and

came into the world to save us. We also

refer to this joyous feast as Christmas.

Biblical Story

The story of the Nativity of Christ is beautifully

told in the Holy Scriptures. The story is found in

Matthew 1:18-26 and in Luke 2:1-20. No matter

How often the Birth of Jesus is told, we realize that

it is an important event.

As the story is told by the Apostles, the Roman Empire was powerful. The Romans had

conquered much of the then known world. Judea and Samaria, what we know today as

Israel, were included in their conquests. Emperor Augustus ordered that a census be taken

in all his lands. He needed to know how many people lived in the empire so he could tax

them. Everyone had to go to the town of their family’s origin to register for the census.

This meant that Mary and Joseph had to go to Bethlehem. They were descendants of King

David and Bethlehem was the City of David.

Mary and Joseph lived in Nazareth and it was a great distance from Bethlehem. It was about

100 miles over very rugged roads. Moreover, Mary was expecting the baby and it was

almost time for her to give birth. Bethlehem was a small town and there were many

descendants of David who had come to register for the census. By the time Mary and Joseph

arrived in Bethlehem there was no place for them to stay. Joseph tried very hard to find a

place to sleep that evening. There was no room at the inn. Finally, Joseph found a cave-like

place where they could rest. This place was used by shepherds to protect their sheep in

stormy weather. It was here that Mary gave birth to Jesus. The baby was wrapped in

swaddling clothes and laid in the straw in the manger.

DEAR PARISHIONERS

Christmas approaches ...the day when our Lord, Jesus Christ - the Savior ofthe world - was born!

God the Father gave a promise to all mankind, that he would send his only begotten son into this world of sin and certain death. The Apostle Paul in his epistle to the Galatians said "But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born ofa woman, born under the Law, so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit ofRis Son into our hearts, crying, "Abba! Father!" (Galatians 4:4-6)

As a result of the Birth of Christ - our savior and the son of God - the Lord fulfilled his promise and brought peace to both heaven and earth, and thus between the heavenly Father and his children. He choose the most pure and blessed virgin Mary, in order that the birth ofhis son would be clean and without original sin, thus to clear the sin of the matriarch Eve, from whom sin and iniquity has entered into the world. The Holy Birth-giver of God is the mediatrix, an ancient term which means it was she who reestablished the link between heaven and earth - between God and Man.

Through Christ and with Christ, man became the son and heir ofGod, a child ofpeace, love, brotherhood and goodwill. Only this type ofman may be wholly free, for he has inherited the kingdom of God and thus has not been sentenced to be the slave of sin and perdition. For many, pride and passion have darkened their view ofthe world, for they do not desire the Kingdom of God, but the rather the kingdom ofman. They have thrown out the authority of God for their own personal glory and pride; they negate God so that they can glorify Man: .in this lies the tragedy ofmodem mankind. The Kingdom of God will come and the Church of Christ will be a militant force, she will lead a holy war and win. Man as a true son ofthe Church of Christ will be her soldier - A warrior of Christ, and only those who fight for the truth and will not betray it can truly be called a warrior of Christ.

We Orthodox Serbians, having received the Orthodox Christian Faith from Christ, have chosen to become brave warriors ofthe Christian Orthodox Church. We know her way - the Church's way: from Bethlehem '1:0 Go\gofua, from the Cross to the Holy Resurrection, and from the Holy Resurrection to eternal life. The Vladika Rade Njegosh said "Who desires to have etemallife is a martyr of this world".

Orthodox Serbians are a people of saints and martyrs for Christ's Church. This has been our choice for centuries. With our faith we await our Holy, Christian, Orthodox Christmas, and glorify it with the

beautiful Christmas Troparian:

"Thy Nativity, 0 Christ our God, has risen upon the world as a light ofwisdom. For through it, those who worshipped the stars, were taught by a star to adore thee, the Sun ofRighteousness, and to know Thee, the Orient from on high, Glory to Thee 0 Lord."

Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the

fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. And behold, an angel

of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone

aroulld them, and they were greatly afraid. Then the angel said to

them, "Do not be afraid, for behold, [ bring you good tidings ofgreat

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the

The Spiritual Meaning of the Badnjak (Yule Log) By St. Bishop Nicolai Velimirovich

Have you ever brought a Badnjak into your home? Do you know that the Badnjak is the finest and

foremost custom of all the many traditions by which our people enhance the Christmas celebration?

The Serbs begin the celebration of Christmas with the solemn ceremony of bringing in a young oak tree

to the house. An oak is usually the most solid tree and produces the most heat.

Have you ever anointed the Badnjak with honey? Have you rejoiced with your children watching its light

emitted in a swarm of sparks? Have you enjoyed its heat? The Badnjak is the tree of happiness and

sweetness, the tree of health, strength and youth, the tree of life and love.

Is there a tree of happiness in this world? Is the Badnjak that tree or is it a semblance and symbol of

that tree? Yes, it is only a symbol and a semblance. The real tree of happiness is He who was born on

that radiant day.

The bringing of the Badnjak into the house represents Christ’s coming into the world and His coming into

our homes and our souls. What a glorious custom and marvelous scene! The Badnjak represents Christ.

As a young and powerful tree the King of love gave Himself to be slain in order to rejuvenate the world

by the fragrance of eternal youth; to thaw frozen mankind by the fire of His love; to enlighten and bring

joy to all man by the flame of His Divine revelation; to annihilate the false gods on earth by the sparks of

His words; to sweeten the bitter waters by the sweet juice of His blood.

Having brought the Badnjaks into your homes have you brought Christ into your homes and your souls?

A picture is only a picture, but Christ is the reality. The Badnjak is a picture, but Christ is the reality. The

Badnjak is a picture of the tree of happiness and as a picture is a warning and reminder that you should

bring into your homes and your souls the real tree of Happiness, the Son of God, our Lord Jesus Christ.

His teaching, His sermon on the Mount was the sermon on Happiness and contains the only charter of

human happiness and He Himself represents the true and eternal Tree of Happiness.

"Rozdestvo" (Thy Nativity)

Thy Nativity, O Christ our God, Raised the light of knowledge in the world; And those who

worshiped the stars were thought by the stars To worship Thee, O sun of Justice, And to know Thee as the East of the heights, O Lord, glory to Thee!

Serbian Christmas Bread – “Cesnica”

Christmas Bread (Cesnica) is served to the family on Christmas Day and it is never cut

with a knife. At mealtime, when the family gathers around the holiday table to break

bread together, it is a solemn and holy moment. Many families follow customs which

began centuries ago, depending on the province in which their ancestors lived. The

holiday candle is lit and placed in the center of the table. The father offers the Cesnica

over the lighted candle and each family member holds a part of the bread with his or

her right hand. In unison they exclaim “Hristos Se Rodi” (“Christ is Born”) and the

answer “Voistinu Se Rodi” (“Truly He is Born”) as they break off a portion of the bread.

In some provinces, a Christmas bread (Kolac) is prepared. The male head of the house

cuts the bread in a sign of the cross on the bottom of the bread with members of the

family turning the bread. Special prayers ar offered with the entire gathering singing

hymns such as “Rodestvo.”

The fortunate person who finds the coin (which was washed and placed in the dough

while being kneaded), is considered blessed for the coming year.

Each person then proceeds around the table, formally greeting every one present with

the traditional greeting “Hristos Se Rodi” and the response “(Voistinu Se Rodi” This

greeting used throughout the Christmas Holy Days is a reminder that Christ brought

Peace into this World by His Birth.

In some provinces a yellow cornmeal cheese dish (Cicvara) is the first course. In some

homes it is served from the pot in which it was prepared and is ladled out with a

wooden spoon. It is believed the custom is a reminder of our humble beginnings in

ancient Serbian life when most people lived in small, poor villages. Silverware was a

precious commodity and the family ate from one pot an used the same spoon. Grains

and crops of the field were the mainstays of life.

The main course is traditionally a barbecued suckling pig. The holiday meal is enhanced

with as many sumptuous courses as the hostess wishes to servel It is a day of

contemplation and rest.

Because John's main role in his life was played out on the day of the Epiphany (Theophany), from the earliest times the Church has dedicated the day following Epiphany to his memory. With this feast is also linked the incident with the hand of the Forerunner. The Evangelist Luke desired to remove the body of John from Sebaste, where the great prophet was beheaded by Herod, to Antioch, his place of birth. He succeeded though, in acquiring and translating only one hand which was preserved in Antioch until the tenth century after which it was transferred to Constantinople from where it disappeared during the time of the Turks. Feasts of St. John are celebrated several times throughout the year, but this day, January 7, has the most Svecara. (That is, those Orthodox Serbs who honor St. John the Baptist as their Krsna Slava – Patron Saint. The Krsna Slava is the day that the Orthodox Serbs commemorate the baptism of their ancestors into Christianity). Among the Gospel personalities who surround the Savior, John the Baptist occupies a totally unique place by the manner of his entry into the world as well as by the manner of his life in this world, by his role in baptizing people for repentance and for his baptizing the Messiah and, finally, by his tragic departure from this life. He was of such moral purity that, in truth, he could be called a messenger angel, as Holy Scripture calls him, rather than a mortal man. St. John differs from all other prophets especially in that he had that privilege of being able, with his hand, to show the world Him about Whom he prophesied. It is said that every year on the feast of the saint the bishop brought the hand of St. John before the people. Sometimes the hand appeared open and other times the hand appeared clenched. In the first case it signified a fruitful and bountiful year but, in the second case, it meant a year of unfruitfulness and famine.

Theophany

The Baptism of Christ

Theophany (from Greek theophania, meaning "appearance of God") is one of the Great Feasts of the Orthodox Church, celebrated on January 19. It is the feast which reveals the Most Holy Trinity to the world through the Baptism of the Lord (Mt.3:13-17; Mark 1:9-11; Luke 3:21-22).

Baptism of Christ

This observance commemorates Christ's baptism by John in the River Jordan, and the beginning of Christ's earthly ministry. The Feast of Theophany is the culmination of the Christmas Season, which starts on January 7 and ends on January19. . In mystic commemoration of this event, the Great Blessing of Water is performed on this day, and the holy water so blessed is used by the local priest to bless the homes of the faithful.

The feast is called Theophany because at the baptism of Christ the Holy Trinity appeared clearly to mankind for the first time—the Father's voice is heard from Heaven, the Son of God is incarnate and standing physically in the Jordan, and the Holy Spirit descends on Him in the form of a dove.

This feast is also sometimes referred to as Epiphany by English-speaking Orthodox Christians, but that name more properly refers to the Western Christian feast commemorating the visit of the Magi to the child Jesus. The term epiphany does appear in some of the service texts for this feast, however.

.

Celebration of the feast

The services of Theophany are arranged similarly to those of the Nativity. (Historically the Christmas services were established later.)

The Royal Hours are read and the Divine Liturgy of St. Basil the Great is served with Vespers on the eve of the feast. The Vigil is made up of Great Compline and Matins. On the morning of the feast, the Divine Liturgy is served.

The Liturgy of the feast begins with psalms of glorification and praise instead of the three normal Antiphons. And the baptismal line from Galatians 3:27 replaces the Thrice-Holy.

For as many as been baptized into Christ have put on Christ: Alleluia.

The Gospel readings of all the services tell of the Lord's baptism by John in the Jordan River. The epistle reading of the Divine Liturgy tells of the consequences of the Lord's appearing which is the divine epiphany.

Since the main feature of the feast is the blessing of water. It is prescribed to follow both the Divine Liturgy of the eve of the feast and the Divine Liturgy of the day itself. But most local parishes do it only once when most of the parishioners can be present. The blessing verifies that mankind, and all of creation, were created to be filled with the sanctifying presence of God.

In connection with the feast, it is traditional for the priest to visit all the homes of the faithful for their annual house blessing.

Hymns

Troparion (Tone 1)

When Thou, O Lord, wast baptized in the Jordan, worship of the Trinity wast made manifest; for the voice of the Father bore witness to Thee, calling Thee His beloved Son. And the Spirit in the form of a dove confirmed the truth of His word. O Christ our God, Who hath appeared and enlightened the world, glory to Thee.

Kontakion (Tone 4)

On this day Thou hast appeared unto the whole world, and Thy light, O Sovereign Lord, is signed on us who sing Thy praise and chant with knowledge: Thou hast now come, Thou hast appeared, O Thou Light unapproachable.

BLESSING OF WATERBLESSING OF WATERBLESSING OF WATERBLESSING OF WATER By Father Thomas KazichBy Father Thomas KazichBy Father Thomas KazichBy Father Thomas Kazich

Every year the Church solemnly blesses water at Epiphany, for when God became man He made

all nature holy in a new and wonderful way. Through his baptism, the Lord blessed all water in

His creation.

A large barrel or tub of water is placed in the center of the church. The priest censes the water,

then blesses it three times with his hand while he says, “Do thou, the same Master sanctify now

also this water by thy Holy Spirit.” After this, the priest dips the Cross in the water three times

and makes the sign of the cross. The troparion of the feast is sung. At the end of the service,

the priest blesses us with the holy water by sprinkling some of it on our heads with a sprig of

basil. We drink the water and take some home in little containers.

Epiphany or Theophany in Greek means “manifestation.” This refers to the appearance of the

Holy Trinity – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – at Jesus’ baptism. God the Father revealed that the

Man – Jesus was His Son and also God, and in the Holy Spirit all men can see God and know Him

everywhere and through everything.

After Epiphany, each year, the priest comes to bless our homes and pray to God to watch over

our family with many years of good health and happiness. These are the things that should be

prepared:

• A table with a white cloth

• An icon

• A candle

• Water in a bowl

• List of names of the family

Holy Water is preserved in the home. There are many occasions in family life when a sip of holy

water can help to remind us of the blessing that was given “for the healing of soul and body.”

"Prologue" Reading For Christmas

By St. Nikolai Velimirovich

Prologue from Ochrid,

The Nativity of Our Lord, God and Savior Jesus Christ

"But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son" (Galatians 4:4) to save the human race.

And when nine months were fulfilled from the Annunciation, when the Archangel Gabriel had appeared to the

Most-holy Virgin in Nazareth, saying, "Rejoice, thou that art highly favored … behold, thou shalt conceive in thy

womb, and bring forth a Son" (Luke 1:28, 31), at that time there went forth a decree from Caesar Augustus

that all the people of the Roman Empire should be taxed. In accordance with this decree, everyone had to go

to his own town and be registered. That is why the righteous Joseph came with the Most-holy Virgin to

Bethlehem, the city of David, for they were both of the royal lineage of David. Since many people descended

on this small town for the census, Joseph and Mary were unable to find lodging in any house, and they sought

shelter in a cave which shepherds used as a sheepfold. In this cave the Most-holy Virgin gave birth to the

Savior of the world, the Lord Jesus Christ. Giving birth to Him without pain just as He was conceived without

sin by the Holy Spirit and not by man, she herself wrapped Him in swaddling clothes, worshiped Him as God,

and laid Him in a manger. Then the righteous Joseph drew near and worshiped Him as the Divine Fruit of the

Virgin's womb. Then the shepherds came in from the fields, directed by an angel of God, and worshiped Him

as the Messiah and Savior. The shepherds heard a multitude of God's angels singing: "Glory to God in the

highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men" (Luke 2:14). "At that time three wise men arrived from the

east, led by a wondrous star, bearing their gifts: gold, frankincense and myrrh. They worshiped Him as the King

of kings, and offered Him their gifts" (Matthew 2). Thus entered the world He Whose coming was foretold by

the prophets, and Who was born in the same manner in which it had been prophesied: of a Most-holy Virgin,

in the town of Bethlehem, of the lineage of David according to the flesh, at the time when there was no king in

Jerusalem of the lineage of Judah, but rather when Herod, a foreigner, was reigning. After many types and

prefigurings, messengers and heralds, prophets and righteous men, wise men and kings, finally He appeared,

the Lord of the world and King of kings, to perform the work of the salvation of mankind, which could not be

performed by His servants. To Him be eternal glory and praise! Amen.

A TINY SECLUDED MANGER WITH ITS SWEET-SMELLING STRAW AND ITS LOWING CATTLE COMPRISED THE HOMELY STAGE UPON WHICH THE MOST STIRRING AND SIGNIFICANT DRAMA OF

THE CENTURIES WAS ENACTED. IT WAS THERE THAT GOD, IN THE PERSON OF HIS SON, JESUS CHRIST, BECAME IDENTIFIED WITH MAN. IN MEEKNESS AND HUMILITY HE CAME TO EARTH AS THE PRINCE OF

PEACE. DURING THE FIRST WORLD WAR, ON CHRISTMAS EVE,THE BATTLEFIELD WAS STRANGELY QUIET. AS THE SOFT SNOW FELL, THE THOUGHTS OF THE YOUNG MEN WERE OF HOME AND THEIR FAMILIES. THAT NIGHT THEY WERE THINKING OF THE PRINCE OF PEACE, THE CHRIST OF CHRISTMAS. HOW DIFFERENT THIS WORLD WOULD BE IF WE COULD UNITE TOGETHER AROUND THAT “HOLY

The son of Serbian National leader Stevan Nemanja, Saint Sava was born in

1169. As a young man Saint Sava yearned for the spiritual life, which lead

him to flee to the Holy Mountain where he became a monk, and with rare

zeal, followed the ascetic practices. Nemanja followed his son’s example

and himself went to the Holy Mountain, where he lived and ended his days

as the monk Simeon. Sava obtained independence for the Serbian Church,

granted by the emperor and the Patriarch of Constantinople, and became

its first archbishop. Together with his father, Sava built the monastery

Hilandar followed by the building of many other monasteries, churches and

schools throughout the land of Serbia. He traveled to the Holy Land of

Jerusalem on two occasions, on pilgrimage to the Holy sites there. He

made peace among his two brothers, who were in conflict over their rights.

Sava also made peace between the Serbs and their neighbors. In creating

the Serbian Church, he created the Serbian state and Serbian culture along

with it. He brought peace to all the Balkan peoples, working for the good of

all, for which he was venerated and loved by all on the Balkan Peninsula.

He gave a Christian soul to the people of Serbia, which survived the fall of

the Serbian state. He died in Trnovo during the reign of King Asen, after

being taken ill following the Divine Liturgy on the Feast of the Theophany in

1236. King Vladislav took his body to Mileseva, where one Turkish Sinan

Pasha removed it, burning it at Vracar in Belgrade on May 10, 1595. Saint

Sava is celebrated January 27th

Ingredients

10 eggs 250g butter or margarine 250g walnuts

250g sugar 10 table spoons of sugar more 100g cooking chocolate

Crust preparation : Separate 10 egg whites from 10 eggs, pour it in one vessel, add 250g of sugar and whisk it all well until it becomes solid foamy mixture. After that, add to this mixture 250g of walnuts (half of it finely ground with a grinder and half of it finely chopped with the knife edge by hand). Whisk it all well, spread the half of this mixture into the average sized rectangular metal baking pan. The thickness of this spread mass should be about 0,5cm to 1cm depending on the baking pan size. Put it into the oven and bake it on the temperature 1800C for about 15 minutes until the crust get golden brown appearance. When it was finished, pull out baking pan from the oven, cut the crust vertically into two equal parts, extract them from the baking pan and leave them to cool off. Thus, we have two layers for filling. Then repeat the procedure spreading the second half of the mixture into the baking pan and bake it in the oven like previous crust. When it was completed, pull out the baking pan from the oven, cut the crust vertically into two equal parts, extract them from the baking pan and leave them to cool off. So, now we have 4 layers for a filling.

Fill or creme preparation : On the hot stove plate put the cooking pan, pour 10 egg yolks and 10 table spoons of sugar and whisk it well. Mix it while cooking until it becomes dense mixture (Honey like density). Then take the cooking pan from the plate and leave it to cool off. Add 250g butter (or margarine) and previously prepared 100g melted chocolate and mix it all well.

Arranging the cake : Spread the creme mixture over each of 4 crust layers leaving some creme for final upper side of the crust and all 4 sides of the cake, spreading thin creme layer over them. Decorate the cake using your broad field of imagination like writing and putting some nice decorating figures on the upper side of the cake depending on the type of the celebration. The edges could be decorated too. It is recommended to put the finished cake into the refrigerator for a while as the cream gets appropriate density. After that, the cake is ready to serve. This is very delicious and exclusive cake used for special family celebrations of the year like birthdays, weddings, Christmas and A New Year celebrations. Enjoy and have a good appetite.

LET US REJOICE AT CHRISTMAS

It is very difficult for us, if not impossible, to have a relationship that is intimate

and binding with an idea or a concept no matter how matter how noble it might

be. God understood this when He revealed Himself to us as a person, and

allowed us to see Him in the person of His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. By sending

Him to earth in the form of mankind, our heavenly Father fully revealed Himself

to us. Jesus is, as St. Paul wrote, God "in human form." (I Tim. 3:16).

Jesus Christ made this point clear when He said to Philip, "He who has seen Me

has seen the Father." (Jn. 14:9). This is exactly what the good news of Christmas

is--that God has shown us what He is like in the person of His Son, and has

invited us to establish a personal relationship with Him. The tiny infant that

Mary cradled in a Bethlehem manger was the "visible likeness" of our invisible

God. (Col. 1:15).

As the day of Christmas approaches, let us be mindful of the words of the angel

who told the shepherds, "This very day in the city of David your Savior was

born--Christ the Lord!" (Luke 2:11). As we prepare to celebrate this holy day, we

must not forget who Christ is. Looking into the face of our Savior we can see and

meet the holiness, the grace and the love of our eternal and heavenly Father.

But if this is to happen, we must abandon, if even for a short time, the mindless

and consuming pursuit of our worldly goals and follow the example of the

shepherds who "hurried off and found Mary and Joseph and saw the baby lying

in the manger." (Lk. 2:16). And having come and met the child, they realized

that they were gazing at God who came to this earth for our sake. That is why

"the shepherds went back, singing praises to God for all they had heard and

seen." (Luke 2:20).

Let us, therefore, resolve to make this Christmas the day in which we come to

meet God in the person of Jesus Christ, and prove to ourselves that Jesus Christ

is Immanuel, which means "God is with us." (Matt. 1:23). When the shepherds

came, they discovered that "It had been just as the angels had told them." (Lk.

2:20). We owe it to ourselves to do no less.

Holy Three Hierarchs - Celebrated February 12th

HOLY THREE HIERARCHS Let Your Ught Shine Before Men

The stars of the sky are numberless as the sands of the sea. As we peer at the heavens. we notice that some stars shine brighter than others. The light from these stars has filtered down through the aeons of time to shine for us in the glitter of the galaxies above.

The saints of the Christian Church. too, are countless in number. And among them are some whose virtue and faith shine like bright lights that reach to inspire and instruct us today. The three great saints. whose memory the Church celebrates on this feast day. are sometimes called the "three stars" of the Orthodox firmament because of the particular brilliance of their love and service to Jesus Christ and His Church.

The three hierarchs or bishops honored today are SI. Basil the Great, SI. Gregory the Theologian, and SI. John Chrysostom. Each is honored on individual feast days in the Church's calendar, as well as together on this day. There is an interesting story that tells why the three are revered together. They had lived in the fourth century and had distinguished themselves in the priesthood. In the years that followed. Orthodox believers remembered them and honored them. It is said that an argument arose among the faithful in Constantinople about the eleventh century as to which of the three was greatest in the Kingdom of God. Some took Basil's side, others sided with Gregory, and still others claimed John was the brightest star in the galaxy of Christ's saints. The dispute came to an end when the three hierarchs revealed themselves to a saintly bishop and explained that they are of equal stature and glory in heaven. They further decreed that a single day be assigned

them in the calendar so that all Christians might honor them equally. And since that time there has been celebrated each year the feast of the three hierarchs.

Let us consider briefly the lives of these remarkable bishops of the fourth century who gained for themselves the honor of being called "doctors" of the Christian Church.

St. Basil was born of a distinguished family. His mother, sister, and brothers are saints of the Church. As a child he not only heard the stories of the Bible from the lips of his mother. but the story of relatives who died for the Christian faith. It is no wonder that Basil consecrated his life to Christ and Church as few men had done before or as few have done since.

He is called uSt. Basil the Great" because of his full dedication to the Christian cause. He was great in piety, being the first to set up rules and regulations for an organized monastic community. He was great in love being the first to form a type of Christian hospital. He was a great writer. leaving huge volumes of works and letters that are still studied with care. He was a great priest. leaving the heritage of the Divine Liturgy that bears his name and is still served in the an era of great difficulty.

Some idea of the character of Basil can be gained from what happened when he was confronted with the emperor's prefect, who tried to get Basil to submit to the emperor's religion. "Don't you know", the prefect said, "that I am armed with great power ... I can order confiscation of goods, exile, torture, and death."

But Basil replied: "Find a more potent power. He who possesses nothing can lose nothing; all you can take from me is the garment that I wear, and a few books, which are my only wealth. As to exile, the whole earth is the Lord's. As to death, that would be a mercy, it would admit me into life, for I an dead to this world ... "

St. Gregory was a life-long friend of St. Basil. His father was a convert to the Christian faith and became a bishop. Gregory is called "the Theologian" because of the eloquent way he defended and expounded the great doctrines of the Christian religion. It was during his lifetime that heresy infected the Church. He went to the great Church of Constantinople, but had to serve and

preach in a house, which was called the "Anastasia" meaning resurrection. And, indeed, through Gregory's teaching and preaching the Church there did resurrect from heresy.

His enemies once tried to kill him for his defense of the faith. But the young man who was to carry out the foul deed cast himself at Gregory's feet and confessed his sinful plan. St. Gregory was moved to tears and forgave him. asking him only to give himself up to Christ. St. Gregory returned to his native city of Nazianzen and there died in the year 390.

St. John, too, was the product of truly Christian home. It was the example of his mother Anthusa's faith and piety that made a pagan teacher proclaim: "Heavens, what women these Christian have!" He was born in Antioch, Syria, in 344, and was given the best classical education of his day.

By the time he became Patriarch of Constantinople, he was given the name "Chrysostom" which means golden-mouthed. It was a tribute to his eloquence as a preacher of the Word of God. Writers of his age say that people preferred going to church to hear St. John preach the Gospel than to go to the theater to see some play. He has been acclaimed as the greatest preacher of the Christian Church, He wrote scores of books, full of sermons, commentaries and articles, and these are still printed today to meet the demand in every language and country of the word.

Perhaps St. John is best known as the one who arranged the Divine Liturgy which is used practically every Sunday of the year. The liturgy is known by his name.

St. John Chrisostom was banished from his see several times. This was because the royal family disliked some of the things he said and did. In 404 he was banished to desert lands. Soldiers exposed him to every hardship, and finally in 407 he fell asleep in Christ, praying "Glory be to God for all things."

Christ once said to His followers:

"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven."

The light of Saints Basil, Gregory, and John still shines.

Amen!
