REVISION IDEAS/STRATEGIES
Study methods
Revision is best when it’s active and interactive rather than passive!!
do chapter summaries and take note of the key skills section and practice questions out of text book.
do concept maps/tables/fishbones/drawings etc write out revision questions to yourself after
reading a chapter, put in away, come back to it later to test your retention of knowledge
Turn key knowledge dot points into questions for re-vision. Eg. dot point 1 Area of Study 2, Unit 2 ‘Identify and describe the stages of adulthood?’
get together with a friend and test each other, email
each other questions summarise main concepts under areas of study
or out- come areas practice exam questions
Exam Questions
be strict with yourself Keep in mind the key term used (ie. identify, describe etc) Take note of the mark allocation for each part to give you a clue as to how
much depth is required After you have finished them use summaries, charts, notes and other
references to expand your answers. Try to test yourself under the suggested time limit for the paper.
EXAM PREPARATION
Structure of the exam Short answer (with space provided) and normally consist of 5 -7 questions,
each with more than one part Each part has increasing complexity:
Eg. * Identify one leading ….
Briefly explain the major causes…
Suggest two reasons… Marks reflect depth: If more marks are allocated to a question, spend more
time, thought and detail on your response Time allocation included for question – use this as a guide for each question
(two minutes per mark is the timing guide you should stick to) Stimulus material provided – graph interpretation, cartoons or tables. This
stimulus materi- al must be referred to or used in some way in your response Requires understanding, interpretation and application of knowledge You must be able to utilise subject specific language and key terminology.
Useful tips
Use reading time wisely, read the entire paper first and go back and read each question carefully.
Interpret stimulus material correctly – what information is included, what is the story?
Note key words and understand what is expected, eg: identify, explain, etc. Do a mental plan of each question, using the formula to answer (define
concept, explain, give an example). Decide with which question is easiest to answer and start with that.
Marks will come easier if you use text book language. Do not waste time rewriting question, although if it helps as structure or a
prompter do so. If a mistake is made, cross it out. Write in pen!! Re-read answers when finished If a question asks for three factors, only
first three will be assessed. If you run out of space, clearly direct
markers to where your answer is at the question on the exam sheet.
